"Desire for the Eternal:
Romance and Passion in the Buddhist Life"
Talk by Vidyadevi & Meditation evening (English)
Evening chaired by Dharmachari Vajracaksu
One of the most powerful and controversial aspects of any religion or philosophy is surely its attitude to sex and marriage, romance and desire. But what did the Buddha have to say on these crucial matters, which intimately touch so many of our lives? Vidyadevi considers various aspects of the Buddhist tradition and draws out some essential – and perhaps some surprising – themes.
The evening will be in workshop style involving meeting everyone, a short guided meditation, listening to the talk, a short tea break and time for questions.

About Dharmacharini Vidyadevi
Since studying English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Vidyadevi has spent the last 25 years editing books on meditation and Buddhism. The most recent being "The Purpose and Practice of Buddhist Meditation" by Sangharakshita, which was published in 2012. She has also edited "Living Wisely" and "Bodh Gaya: its significance in the 21st century" both of which will be published later this year. Of all the books she’s edited, her own favourite is "The Drama of Cosmic Enlightenement: Parables, Myths and Symbols of the White Lotus Sutra." She was ordained into the international Triratna Buddhist Order in 1993, and given the name Vidyadevi. (Vidya is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘wisdom’ or ‘appreciative awareness’ and devi means ‘shining one’ - so her Buddhist name gives her a lot to aspire to!) She lives with her husband in the English countryside, where as well as editing, planting trees and going for long walks, she is researching and writing a book on Buddhism and Western literature.
