 In just a few centuries, Rome grew from a very small village in central Italy to became the greatest empire the earth has ever known, from Portugal to Persia as far north as Britain, and in the south it encompassed the whole of Northern Africa. The Roman culture evolved throughout the almost 1200-year history of this civilization.
