How do ya plan a trip?

I would like to know how one goes about finding what train to get on if they have a specific destination. Say going from Columbia SC to Atlanta GA. Is that an outragous trip or is it reasonable?

Howdo stranger -

"A Web search on "train hopping" finds sites such as "The High Tech Hobo", "Introduction to Trainhopping" and "North Bank Fred's Freighthopping Page"."

take a read sometime, I think you'll find it informative.

Per your question - SC to GA is most doable indeed. I would GREATLY encourage you to not begin train hopping on a whim - view it kind of like sailing to Hawaii - not something you do without a little research and planning. It is potentially fatal, with jailtime and hefty fines possible (though unlikely), however, I think you'll find that if your desire is great enough to overcome the process of researching it all, you will be amply rewarded in the end. One more thing - I recommend doing it with a friend...

let me know if you have further thoughts or questions.
