Urban camping in Japan?
Hello everyone,
me and my friend are traveling next week to Japan. Because our budget is low and a couch surfing is not every time possible we also take our tent. I want to ask where we can camp in Tokyo?
It will be more cities but we are not sure yet.
Therefore we would like to hear some experience from you concerning urban camping!
Looking to hear some new information!
Greetings
Lukas and Andre
if you really cant afford to stay anywhere,
i cant really say its a wise idea to go travelling to begin with, inshort,.
i really dont recommend the camping..
japan is an expensive city, just to warn ya..
but hostels, only costs roughly 3000 yen a night.
if it was more country side, id recommend it but even then, sometimes you pay.enterance for the camping zone..
its also the most rainiest season at the moment in japan too
dont catch a cold now :X
sincerely,
yutakatron
Urban camping sounds so cool.
I should try somewhere one day.
If you can't find any host in Tokyo (I know it's usual here), go to Haneda International Airport.
It's open 24, has leather couch, convinient store, and free wifi!(hard to find in Japan) not so far from city center.
Or some 24 open Karaoke, cyber cafes are really cheap over-night charge. e.g.

Hope you enjoy exploring.

Well, nothing is impossible, but it might not be easy for you to find a spot. Tokyo already have a big number of homeless people who inhabit most of the urban spots, but as far as i know, there might be police kicking you away if you try to set up something in a park.
Do let us know how your experience will be.
I would agree with others about finding another solution like sleeping in internet cafe
Thanks for your help.
We are trying to save so much as possible for visiting things ( tickets for attraction if needed etc.).
We are letting you know our experience if we successfully urban camping in Japan. But could you recommend us some spots where it could be save(Under a bridge, which park, playground???).

As a foreigner living in Japan, I advise you against camping under a bridge or in a park. In fact I plead with you not to try illegal camping.
If you really can't couch surf in the cities look for camp sites at

Sorry it's in Japanese.
Consider going to rural areas if you can't pay the fee, I know of at least one place in my town where there is no fee for camping.
Well, Japan is one of the safest countries in the world according to statistics, but i guess this is one of the things you don´t really see anyone doing unless they are really homeless. If you find a spot, there might be homeless people taking offence that you are taking their usual area, or the police might kick you away.
I heard some people stayed inside the platforms of some train stations, that might be an option. But it depends on the station staff if they kick you out or not. And the access to the stations are usually locked during night.
If tourists do something as stupid as camping in public parks or stations I think it reflects badly on other foreigners here. (when someone got busted with drugs in my company the rest of us had to undergo company wide drug screening, it's just the way things are here)
Other options:
Couch surf
Karaoke bar
Manga cafe
Capsule hotel
Hostel
y'all are stupid.
however, If you need a place to stay near tokyo you can crash at my place.

I`m doing some wild camping to at the moment, often in city`s.
I have camped in saga at the sports station, in Hiroshima in a big park (the northern side hat a lot of trees and there was a manga library with public toilet), in Osaka in the castle grounds (they have security checking there but there is a place where they used to hide the soldiers...).
I other city`s I have been I couch surfed or I stayed at internet cafe`s. I haven't been in Tokyo yet.
In the countryside it's no problem but I try to avoid being seen from the road side.
And in all Shikoku you can camp just anywhere because of the pilgrims.
PS.: Always have mosquito spray with you and maybe long pants and t-shirt in evenings and morning when camping.
My husband (Japanese) and I camp in Japan sometimes. I think if you go to some of the bedroom towns around Tokyo and find a quiet, small park, you can pitch your tent. We always choose places which are hard to see (behind bushes or in a grove of trees) from the road or areas where pedestrians might walk.
We also stay quiet and go to sleep early and get up early so as to not disturb any neighbors. We are careful to leave no sign of our camping (as a courtesy and for respect to out-of-doors). Sometimes, we are lucky enough to find a place with a bathroom nearby. If there are any signs forbidding camping, we do not camp there.
Sorry I can't help you will locations in Tokyo as I live in another area of Japan and seldom go there.
Have a nice stay in Japan.
