It's a very good idea! I've been traveling europe by train three times and you get to see a lot more than on a plane.

You also get to meet a lot of other people who also is travelling with eurail/interrail.

Now to the information:
Eurail and Interrail is the same thing, exept that Eurail is for non-european residents, and interrail is for europeans.(so it's eurail for you)

It gives you a universal ticket for most train journeys in europe( some of the most expensive trains, and some high-speed lines are not included, or cost extra)

When it cames to buses; some buslines gives you a discount, but mostly it's just for train( but it's plenty of lines in europe, you will probably not need to take the bus other than in the cities)

For more info check :http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes

( or just ask me ;-))

If you are over 26, you have to buy a adult pass, which is an 1st class pass.
The price difference between buying a Eurail pass, and single tickets depends on how much you will travel, and where you want to travel.
When you have the eurail pass, it's not nescesary to book additonal tickets, exept if you want to reserve a seat, or need a sleepers cabin.

How it works; You first have to decide if you want to buy a global pass, which is valid for 23 different countries, or a smaller pass, which is valid for 1 and up to 5 countries.

Then, it's also different types of tickets; look at this link: http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes/global-pass

It depends on how many countries you gonna visit, and how much train you are planning to travel with. If you just are going to visit one or two countries, it's maybe best to buy tickets seperatly.( allthough it exists a one country eurail ticket, which gives you unlimited train-travels in one country)

Feel free to ask more, i'm happy to help!

Sincerly; William

But like me, I only intend to ride the ride the train from Madrid to Barcelona, so which train station should I go? How do I buy and book tickets? Do I need to reserve or there will be trains all the time?

If you just going to take the train from Madrid to Barcelona, it's not nescessary to by Eurail ticket.

You don't need to reserve in advance, the trains go often, especially on the route Barcelona- Madrid, the train go every hour, and takes maximum 3 hours( it's a high-speed train)
For the high-speed train the station in Madrid is ;
Madrid Puerta de Atocha, in Barcelona it's Barcelona Sants.

This is the Spanish rail homepage, where you can book, and see timetables, and all the routes in Spain: http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html
