Hi Liz, Dont worry too much about medical items all ships carry pretty much a full blown pharmacy onboard. I would bring some headache tablets (saves having to ask) and anti sea sickness (only if you are prone to it). Ships usually carry cold and flu tablets and throat lozenges depending on the nationality of the crews as its not a requirement, I would recommend to bring your own of these just in case. Remember bring extra of any prescription medications you have to take (an extra 2 weeks or so) just in case your delayed. and declare these and all your medicines your carry to the medical officer. There is nothing worse than having someone fall ill on your ship and you have no idea what they have taken!!! In regards to extra stuff dont forget: -sunglasses as the glare can be bad at times -gummy bears (or other assorted lollies) crew favourite and not always in the bond store - sunscreen - money (us$ is best) so if you get off in port you can get yourself a taxi into the city as you wont find an atm at the port gates. -pair of good grip soled shoes decks are always greasy and slippery - alternate pair of clean shoes to wear inside the accomodation. - clothes your not worried about getting dirty (for walking around on deck as you will end up leaning in grease at some point) The ship should have a bond store where you can buy soft drinks, ciggarrettes etc - bring some small denomination us$ notes. thats about all I can think of right now, good luck! P.S 31 days and i get off my ship to go home, yes its not as much fun working on them as travelling on them. This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. Haha yes the clothing thing can be an issue, i mean i have my summer stuff with me now but am flying back into the middle of european winter never nice as im to lazy to carry a full blown winter jacket with me to work. i would definatly bring some usd over euros, most places u can still basically by anything in usd and most ships accounts are also balanced in usd so makes life easier. maybe just a couple of hundred or so that will cover you for onboard and some small taxi trips into the city. Most places in the world on arrival and departure the immigration authorities will come onto the ship and visually line up passports to crew members faces (captain typically holds all the crews passports its normal not sure about passengers though). then when you go out you will have a port security card (dropped off by the agent) or your passport / photo id to allow you in and out through the port gate wiht a security guard manning it. this of course all depends on the ports (i havent worked much in central america). im sure you have it but maybe a yellow fever injection (10yrs validity) in the yellow WHO injection booklet, sometimes immigration can be a bit funny about yellow fever injections if there not in that book. good luck and if you have any more questions feel free to drop me a line no matter how stupid they seem. p.s. 27 days to go for me! |
