Darrell posted these explanations:
They are all smart-ass alterations of names or references to what makes them distinctive.

IndiaNAPolis= Naptown = sleepy place. I've heard "IndiaNOplace"

"Home of NASCAR" = Charlotte, North Carolina- stock car racing

"Miami of Canada" = Southern vacation for Canadians = Chicago

"Pigs eye" = very large pork packing industry, perhaps?

"Lost Wages"- do you need help with that?

"Bird City" = Phoenix- a legendary bird that rebirths itself in a fire every 500 years, an American Indian concept of renewal of the world.

Nawlins = New Orleans- spoken with a deep south accent.

Most of the rest, I'll have to have help on myself!
No idea, much, about "Transplant City" except, in a famous old movie newcomers were not allowed to say "Frisco". Only natives could do that.

The area above and east of Albuqueurque (Big Al) is mountanous and dry. No sharks! There is a county in western Kansas just east of there called "Finney"- as in fish fin-...there is almost no water there...

"Little London"- there is a place in Arizona (not close to Colorado) where the original London Bridge has been moved- rock by rock and brick! It is a mystery...

Zoe ,
Gulnoza is the same GIRL,You've heard her voice and evaluated her Pronunciation high..
Do You remember,I've told about my sad experince of participating in TESOL EVO BaW2011 Training? About how some trainers/managers/moderators involved into western Educational trainings create additional artificial boundaries for women from the developing countries.
Why are Westerners so Different?!
http://www.couchsurfing.org/group_read.html?gid=2164&post=8011714

For improving this situation we are LEARNING!!!
But sometimes it is so difficult, even not possible!
The TESOL EVO 2012 project invited everyone for trainings from our global village to its 14 sessions:
http://evosessions.pbworks.com/w/page/48510148/Call_for_Participation2012
But...Some are unfriendly even for registering, some are not possible for us due the poor bandwidth...
I wanted very much to be learnt in the session "MachinEVO
Video Productions of Language Learning Conversations"...
It is not possible!!!
And I am so HAPPY with my FRIEND and Colleague GULNOZA,bcs she is the Ever LEARNER!
Btw, Gulnoza is a friend of John Couper, TESOL Professor, who is working in Almaty.

There are almost 10 Stan Countries in the world! How to be not lost among them? How to be not confused with the country name?
Mnemonics and mind maps are the best Teaching/Learning tools here!
A mnemonic is a memory aid. Mnemonics are often verbal, are sometimes in verse form, and are often used to remember lists. Mnemonics rely not only on repetition to remember facts, but also on creating associations among easy-to-remember constructs and lists of data.
Therefore, I try to play with Mnemonics and mind maps.I like this Mnemonic for the word Necessary very much!
Necessary = Never Eat Crisps, Eat Salad Sandwiches, And Remain Young!

Zoe -

Have lived in Coronado (an "Island" off San Diego) for nearly all of my life and have never-ever heard San Diego referred to as the "WHALE'S VAGINA." I've heard it referred to as "SUN DIEGO," "AMERICA'S FINEST CITY," "SAN D GAYGO," and also "TJ NORTH (NORTE). We do have some cities and communities within San Diego County with with "colorful" nicknames:

National City: Naturally Shitty (it is. . .) & Nasty City

San Marcos: San Mucus

Imperial Beach: Venereal Beach

Chula Vista: Chula Juana (because of all the Mexicans residing there legally and illegally)

Escondido: Escon-dildo

Santee: Clan-tee

San Ysidro: San-Y-Skid-row

Rancho Penasquitos: Ranch Skinny Penis

As for all of Los Angeles, we refer to their citizenry as "L Aliens," and the city as "Hell A."

I do believe that somer of these are "terms of endearment" and others are just "slams or bashing" by people over the years, all in all, I find them entertaining. . .
My town of Coronado is more embraced by being labeled "Emerald City" because of the author of "The Wizard of Oz" was said to have written one of him many books at a residence located nearby the famous Hotel del Coronado:

What a great video! I'm from Washington, the "...our hippies are richer than Oregon" state. Not sure if that is a correct depiction, but Oregon and Washington do seem to have an active enduring "hippie" element. One thing I noticed, there were palm trees and tropical beaches in the background when he speaks of "Oregon." There isn't any of that in Oregon. I think a better description for Washington and Oregon is "It really doesn't rain THAT much and no matter how gray and rainy, we're still awesome."

Oh, diese weltberuehmte deutsche Genauigkeit...

@"Verabredet
Germans don't just agree to meet up at two, and then rely on their mobile phones to explain why they're late. They make utterly clear, unambiguous appointments. And then they describe themselves as "verabredet." "You are late. We were verabredet. I am simply not understanding this." It's an adjective that defines a whole culture".
