Well - sitting here in Ho Chi Minh City and feeling very confused about nouveau Communism, all I can say is whoever you vote for, make sure you vote. What a privilege. Really, what are your " reasons for making the choice you do"? Or are some decisions the products of Masterful Marketing?! would like to read your opinions, expressed not only via one-two words ,but via 2-3 sentences. Even living so far from the USA I am receiving messages (Do not know Why? Are they Spams?...like this: ![]() @"It's crunch time. We're planning ahead for Election Day, and we need to know how many people from your state will be able to volunteer to reach out to folks in nearby battleground states -- either on the phone or by taking a trip over there. The margin is certain to be close there. So I've got a quick question for you: Will you be joining? Commit right now to volunteer on Election Day. We'll be making calls and having conversations with voters to get them out to the polls. If everybody shows up to help get out the vote, I know we'll win this. That's why it's urgent that we have as many people from your state as possible reach out to folks in battleground states, in any way they can. So we need to know if you're in. Vote in our Facebook poll via http://econ.st/SDD3Ae https://www.facebook.com/TheEconomist/app_102068836552678?fsrc=scn/tw/te/co/ustab7 H Since you've mentioned it, I think that's one of the reasons why I like Obama: unlike Romney, he doesn't try to cram his religion down anyone's throat. Sure, he goes to church, speaks of sending prayers, but he leaves the rest of us to worship to who/what as we please. This continues into his morality issues, too: he doesn't put God in with abortion: he says that decision is between a woman, her doctor, her family, and her own conscience. Cherie Read today that: Exit poll: 80,000 Americans in Israel voted, 85% for Romney, 14% for Obama. @"According to an iVoteIsrael exit poll, half of the 160,000 eligible U.S. voters living in Israel voted absentee, of which an overwhelming majority selected Republican candidate Mitt Romney. That reportedly includes 7,500 registered in the swing state of Florida". http://972mag.com/exit-poll-80000-americans-in-israel-voted-85-for-romney-14-for-obama/58829/ and that: The Business Cycle Doesn't Care Who's President. @"On this graph showing the U.S. economy since World War II, the squiggly line represents GDP in trillions of dollars. The straight line is the average growth rate to 2007. Projecting the trend line to today, you can see how much the U.S. has lost in the crisis. George - Let me add, that they should also think a bit before they vote for someone whose solution to slow recovery under Obama is to implement the same basic policies that Bush had, and which played such a large role in creating the problem. In the days since the election, I have talked with several of my Rio Grande Valley neighbors about how they voted. The responses are not at all surprising. If we are having the conversation in Spanish, Obama. If we are having the conversation in English, Romney. The counties along the Rio Grande, which separates Texas from Mexico, went to Obama. The majority of people in those counties are Spanish speakers. Texas as a whole went to Romney. The majority of Texans are English speakers. Sometimes I wish people were not so predictable. On the issue of whether or not a single vote counts: Amnesty International (for those not aware, an international human rights organization) began with polite letters expressing concern for a particular prisoner of conscience. The organization has been successful in improving many prisoners' situations and even in having them freed. No individual letter did this alone. It was the 20,000 letters that did this. However, if no one had sent an individual letter, there wouldn't have been 20,000. We are all in this together. (It's not a democracy if you don't vote.) day 9 without power and I am walking over to our local primary school that is closed and flooded to cast a paper ballot. They have set up tents on the lawn of the school,I hear. I also heard they 'ready to eat' military meals that I heard you can 'pop' to make the meal hot. A couple of my work colleagues have eaten them and say they are ok. Just want them for my sons, don't have much of an appetite at all but have been drinking tons of hot coffee. The red cross came through when I was at work and my son said we didn't need any thing but dog food! So we have a giant bag of dog food. When you don't have power to know what is going on you hear a lot of talk 'on the street'. Don't know how true it is though. In NY you can vote in ANY polling place by paper ballot. Going to the polls with my 3 sons. My son Jack,18,a history buff, will be voting for the first time. 'Wild horses' couldn't keep me away from voting in this election. Really don't know how the election is going to go. In my neighborhood many people are voting for Obama. At my furniture store, in a minority neighborhood people I work with and customers I have asked are just not voting at all. I can't understand this but afraid this does not bode well for President Obama. Tomorrow we are scheduled to have a Nor'Easter rain/snow storm.
