Leave us alone Sandy!
The winds are starting to pick up and the rain has started to come down. A tree fell across the street and since we are having a warm fall it still had all its green leaves on it and must have been too heavy in this wind. My husband and son did their best best to clear one lane of the road so cars could pass. Within two hours the town workers where I live came with 3 trucks, many men and chainsaws and cut up the tree and neatly stacked on the side of the road. This was all done in high winds ans slashing rain. I went out to thank them and the foreman knows me and said he is coming into my furniture store to buy some furniture from me!
Each time the electricity flutters it scares me. The high tide here will be about 9:30PM EST and we are on 'pins and needles until then. We live close to the water on Long Island and our big fear is the storm surge that can cause coastal flooding. All three of my strong sons and my husband is home. I am baking and cooking 'up a storm' to keep busy. I think I am going to clean my closets next.
The storm does not seem that bad yet but I think we may have rain for days that could be a problem. The buses and subways are shut down as well as schools and most business in my town. Friends have taken amazing photos of the ocean in its majestic fury. We have great respect for the Atlantic with my sons being lifeguards on the beach. I am adamant about them not going down to the beach to checkout the massive waves. The good thing is their are many police cars blocking people from getting too close to the beach.
Say a prayer for us!
Judy
ps
there was a 22yo Italian couch surfer who was alone in New York and didn't know what to do in the storm. I offered him a couch and a family to wither the storm with. We have been in touch but at this point it is best for him not to venture outside even if he could.

That is why I am cooking so much. I am cooking meat in the freezer! Thanks for the tips on the water! The rest of the tree just toppled over in the road.

Thinking about you and my friends in vulnerable parts of America. Glad that you have your 4 men with you. I have my radio on. And BBC news.
My daughter now lives in LA.
Stay warm safe and well

Thanks everyone for your concern. We still have power so that makes everything much better. The weather is unseasonably warm here in the high 50's F. So no problem with heat. Each time the lights flicker I think that will be the end! I am cooking and cleaning and phoning and on CS and FB. So nice to be home and not at work today or maybe the next few days!

The Long Island RailRoad has suspended operations as has the MTA (subways and busses). Parts of the LIE are closed if not all of it. The only people on the roads are emergency vehicles, cops and fireman. Kind of eery. Mayor Bloomberg cut off power to the "Rockaways" in an effort to make people relocate from the beaches in Queens. There are several tall housing projects that have no power so no elevators. There are many emergency shelters open throughout the city to accomodate the elderly, handicapped people, people with animals etc. After 911 so much money was poured into NYC for emergency readiness that I think NYC has it covered. You can call a hotline number and someone will come and get you, pack your things and move you into a shelter, school, college etc.

I faced days without power with an icestorm in 1986 again in '98 and when the black out in 2003, each time I used my BBQ to cook my meals.
Keep a battery powered radio handy.
Be careful of flooding, the water will be filthy.
You are in my thoughts and prayers, Judy and anyone going through this.

Mother Nature is unpredictable. It's affecting us all the way up here in and around Toronto. It's colliding with a northern storm.
It's cold, rainy (raining off and on since Friday, the ground is already saturated-a big worry about flooding because of this) and VERY windy.
The winds are expected to reach up to 120 kms overnight in parts of Ontario (Canada). But so far so good, and I'm sure that it's nothing at all what NYC is experiencing.
Batten down the hatches and stay safe Judy, and all others affected by Sandy.
We evacuated! The water came up over a canal down the street from us and the water started moving real fast down our street. We jumped in out SUV and made a run for it. We had to dodge trees down in the middle of the streets. We are now on higher ground with relatives. We left with the clothes on our backs and our dog. Really hope we can return home tomorrow after the tide goes out. Realy happy to be with loved ones and having my family safe and sound. Not sure what shape our house is in though.

In the late-1970s, the system was given a dose of political correctness: male names were added to the Atlantic hurricanes list, as were French and Spanish names, reflecting the languages of the nations affected by the storms.

While we're discussing survival techniques, one of my favorites is to freeze milk and juice containers (after opening and pouring off a bit allowing for expansion), and use them as your block ice in the cooler.
The drink is always ice cold, and it frees up a bunch of space that's usually allocated to room for ice.

Judy....Hoping that all of you are safe and secure....
