Any experience in Istanbul?

I am traveling in April, and will have a 15 hour evening layover in Istanbul. Just wondering if anyone has been there and if you have thoughts about leaving the airport, public transport, and if it is safe to move about at night. Is there an active night life or do the roll up the streets early.
