Not personally, but I read a most amusing saga of some newlyweds from NY. After the wedding, they flew to Honolulu for their honeymoon. That was the morning the tsunami struck from the earthquake in Canada, and they were evacuated from their luxury beachside room with wailing sirens. They spent a few days relaxing in Hawaii (or trying to), then went to fly home, and the Sandy storm had just hit. No way to get home to New York. Determined, they got tickets to fly from Hawaii to LAX. There they rented a car and drove to Chicago. From Chicago they waited for a flight to NY when the airports re-opened. The bride's comments: "when they said for better or worse and we were to be there for each other, I'm not sure we were thinking of this. We still love each other, though. Hopefully the future won't be so exciting." Cherie This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. To see this full converstion, sign up or log in. Dear Heidi, I kept my mom informed daily so she was ok but of course her two children, daughter-in-law and two precious granddaughters were in the area and she was reading the news. I'm sure it wasn't easy for her. * It was really weird. Just a mile from us the land was flooded, there was no electricity in many places, lots of people lost their houses, businesses, customers... It was unreal! Two days after the hurricane, all the people in Park Slope were on the streets, filling restaurants (that could stay open. Because of the storm commute became impossible for many people)... It was like a typical sunday though it was a week day. The day of Halloween, they cancelled the parade but since it's so important for kids, trick or treat walks were on. Lots of kids in costumes were on the streets, taking candy from people who offer them in front of their houses. When we were walking, I saw a car crushed under a tree! That was the only thing I saw in the neighborhood but even that made me understand that it was real, not something you watch on tv. And yesterday, I walked the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan. Lower Manhattan was like ghost town. All the businesses were closed. Even SoHo (which is lively during normal days) were deadly, most restaurants were closed... But I haven't seen New Jersey and the coastal areas. The photos tell the story though! |
