We'll be in Europe (Geneva then Alicante then Carcassonne) from December until February...then in Costa Rica in March and April. We'd be interested! Anyone want to come to Costa Rica in March?

Costa Rica sounds great. Is the middle or end of April an alternative for you?

Flaminia,
Don't go anywhere!
I'm coming to visit you with a tv crew.
More will come... In a minute!
I would enjoy a Costa Rica meet up anyone else interested?
I can put together a Costa Rica meeting if there are enough people interested. We can host 4 to 6 people in our own house, and 3 or 4 people in another house on our finca, IF we can do it in the first week or so of March. Lots of time to look for other hosts, but some are an hour or so away...not an insurmountable problem. For later in March, or in April, the second house would have to be rented, rather than a free couch, but the cost is minimal...$10 /night/person. Between the two houses, there are two queen beds, two single beds, a trundle bed, and a window bed, as well as a 2 person tent and any number of mattresses. Some of us are beyond the tent or mattress on the floor stages:) June is doable as well, but June weather is good enough in most of the world.
A sus ordenes,
Sharon
Nos encantaria participar en este encuentro aunque hasta finales de enro no nos podemos comprometer. Seguimos en contacto.

I would love Costa Rica AND white nights - Tashkent but depends on practicalities - viz. finances, dates and, not least, twisting my consultant's arm LOL

I agree Costa Rica would be a great place. Even some hotels there might be very reasonable if some of us don't want to sleep on a couch or can't find one.

Costa Rica is not so far from here.... sounds good!
Emi.
I would like to meet in Costa Rica also.
Might go to Lisbon end of June (Rotary International Convention), so a side trip to somewhere in Europe is also a possibility.

Late April...or early July is always the best time for me....
Dream to meet many of 50s+ Travellers in Uzbekistan or in Russia...
To meet up in Uzbekistan every season is good! Hotels, transportation means, eating/drinking here are cheap.Flights are almost from all cities over the world. The CS community here is very hospitable and multilingual.

Добро пожаловать!

We are looking for an escape in March (after my contract finishes) so we are all ears. We would offer the UK but it's a tad cold at that time of year - though France can be nice :)

It's a GREAT idea to organise again a (long) weekend as we enjoyed in Istanbul some years ago. Of course all the new members of this group could create new impact.
Anyway, when something is organised I am very interested to participate and to meet you.
I think Spain, Italy or Greece would be interesting for his purpose in spring (good weather). Around the summer more countries could be considered if Europe would become the choice. I hope the location will be not to far from an airport with charter flights (or low cost airlines). Because of practical reasons it's good to have 2 or 3 members of this group ho like to cooperate and who live not to far from each other.
Kind regards, Peter
Meher,
I'll say hi to Dubai from Lebanon. We won't be too far!

Hi Nancie - I will be in Chang Mai from 23rd Feb until 3rd March if you would like to meet for coffee or lunch? I will probably be staying at Veerachai guesthouse

Costa Rica sounds great, Argentina too. I wonder if your friend in Buenos Aires is the same person that took me to the theatre? France sounds wonderful. I would love to meet & greet & get to know personally some of the people who's words I have been reading here on & off for some time.

I live in Andalucia near Gibraltar and am new to CS but I would do my very best to get anywhere in the south of Spain to meet other CSers, especially ones like what I read in these 50+ posts. I am in Spain from fall until late spring, when I go to Italy.
Will be in Orlando and then San Antonio in March /April. But would love to join in for a 50+ meet up later on hopefully in Europe. Tashkent sounds great....or else maybe can visit there sometime....I believe its fascinating, but all those visas can mean a true herculean task!!

Hi Ronit...would love to meet you in San Antonio...but am a little hazy on dates. I bought my BA tickets months ago when the fares were low low.And wouldnot plan on the US at this time of year...for me any place is cold..but then my 10 year US visa expires and thought it best to travel in March/April. To renew the visa is a hassle. And now prefer to travel to S E Asia, which i do pretty often. Give me a few days and will bring out my travel plans and get back to you.
Katie,
visa,visa issues, visa issuing...
seems that here are people in my street from all parts of Hindustan....
every day see at least 6-10 from Bharatia...try to understand Hinglish,Hindi,Urdu...So many children... Some already are fluent in Russian...
Halima
Hi Halima...I would love to visit Uzbekistan...Tashkent and other places around. If the 50+ trip does not materialise, I'll come visit in late summer. Will this be OK for you. Will write to you directly later on, mid Jan maybe..Am in US mid March to April...and hope to visit Ireland for 3 days before my flight home from London..Would love to meet you...folks here in mumbai seem to know you...Meher..Sheila...Madhvi in shimla...
First 2 weeks of April I could join (in France/Dordogne) because of Belgian school holidays although I can't promise my presence yet, and that period we might have a couple from this group surfing with us :p
Pol can't join because of work. So I will have 3 free spaces in my car from Antwerp to Dordogne, about 10 hours drive? And if I need to our couple from this group, only 1 seat is left, but hopefully one of the Istanbul gang can join me/us. I will surely ask her.
I can bring our small tent ;-)
School holidays in France (zone B - Limoges? = 2nd half of April) = PERFECT because less trafic in 1st half :-)
Easter holidays in France
Saturday April 20th 2013 - Monday May 6th 2013
Saturday April 13h 2013 - Monday 29th 2013
Saturday April 27th 2013 - Monday May 13th 2013
I think the Dordogne (Aquitaine) is in Zone C (the same as Paris) so it will be the spring holidays for the last weekend in April.
I have contacted a couple of nearby gites that offer weekend rentals - but one only offers weekend rents outside school holidays so they may not be available. If I get a positive reponse I'll post all the details in the France group. Accommodation at ours will have to be on a first come basis. We are up to 20+ so we will definitely need additional accommodation.
Prices seem to be around €120 - €210 for a weekend (3 night) gite rental. (Gites accomodate 4-5 people).
There is also a chateau very close by that offers chambre d'hotes at £146 per room for a 3 night weekend - including breakfast.

Several people have mentioned France. We are in the Dordogne not Paris but our house is pretty big - we can 'home' 10 (including Richard and I) but you do NEED a car as it is quite rural though many beautiful towns and villages nearby, lots of chateaux and the,of course, wine regions. March can have very pleasant weather but equally can have rain. Later (May/June or Sep) is better - Jul / Aug gets very hot and lots of tourists. There are nearby properties (walking distance) available to rent if >10 are interested.

Sheryl, I can't drive but am a good navigator. Perhaps we could share costs in France!
Anne
I went through the thread and as of November 28th, we have the following places and number of people interested.
Place Mentioned: People Interested:
Costa Rica 3
India 1
France 7
Europe in general 2
Uzbekistan 2
Tahiti 1
Walla Walla, WA, USA 1
Greece 1
Croatia 1
Spain 1
Argentina 2
Italy 1
Ireland 1
Here are some of my thoughts:
Flaminia mentioned picking a continent first. Since some of us have to
factor in the cost of getting there, if there are enough people
interested, we could pick two places. The meetings don't need to have a
lot of people. I prefer smaller groups, to be able to get to know people better - maybe 15 to 20.
Some mentioned January or February, but I think that is too soon to plan
a major meeting. If people are serious about getting together, I think
the end of April would be the earliest a meeting could be organized
depending on the country.
This would be a great opportunity for the less vocal and/or new people to participate. I joined the group to facilitate meeting new people in new-to-me places and don't always want to participate in chatting. I, obviously, fit into the less vocal group - for the above reason and sometimes because by the time I have time to respond, someone else has already voiced my opinion; sometimes I am not interested in the subject. By the way, I hate the word "lurkers." Even though it has become an acceptable word in chat rooms, to me it has a negative connotation. Sort of like voyeur - where the people being observed are unaware of it and might be uncomfortable with it. I think a lot of the group members enjoy looking at the group chat room to check out what's going on with the group with the hope that a subject might arise that they want to chime in on.
The paragraph above probably should be in a new thread but I thought I could cut and paste and find my browser doesn't support this. If there a way for someone reading this to transfer this information to another thread?
Last item: It would be helpful if everyone posts at the end of the thread and references what or whose comment they are responding to, rather than replying directly by hitting the reply button after the particular comment. That way, we wouldn't have to scroll through the entire thread to have the thoughts be in chronological order.
That's it for me. I would love to receive some comments on my commentary.
Anne

Kris: Shoot!! Both sound good to me. Maybe Tahiti is a little more appealing right now; only because I'm cold and its raining here.
Hi Guys,
Just found this thread and am really interested in getting away to somewhere warm February/March and again in September.
Costa Rica is on my bucket list so I'd be happy to organise myself a trip to Central america based on a CS meeting there then travel around. Perhaps hooking up with another CS'er to do that or going it alone.
For September why not a roving meet up/gastronomique experience in France. I could drive over from the UK (with my dog) and thus provide some transport for fellow CS'ers??
So I will now switch over to the seperate group set up for a Costa Rica meet and take it from there. Someone in France want to set up a group for an Autumn French experience?
Steve & Snoopy
Steve that sounds good...oh how I love eating!!! Getting to Costa Rica is not possible as I will be in the US at that time...but am willing to come back to Europe in Aug/Sept if a group is formed. I might ask for a ride to France from London, because its easier to get to london from Mumbai.Right now am just thinking out loud!!
Its amazing how many e mails I have received after "isnt it time... "'post came up on 50+ group. Am hoping to get to Pondicherry with another CS from Berlin who will couch surf with me before we leave. And hopefully a Spanish lady will join us there.
Cheers for the 50+ group. The world sure is shrinking...

It seems there is a lot of interest in France :)
First of all, as I mentioned above, we can accommodate 12 people (including Richard and I). We have three double rooms and two twin bedrooms plus two folding (Z) beds. (We also have two camp beds and two sofas but they're probably not the most comfortable for sleeping ;) ) We are happy to host but a 'chip in' with the food would be appreciated :)
I need to check with our neighbours re nearby gites once we have an idea of numbers. Our neighbour is renovating an old barn as a gite. It was looking nearly complete last time we were over but I will need to check to see if it would be ready in time. The other little gite in the hamlet sleeps two (in a double). The next village (Tourtoirac - a few minutes drive away) has a few bigger gites.
Dates: we are very flexible but would probably want to avoid late May / early June as that is exam time for our sons - so we need to be around - calming one and chivvying the other ;) Late April / early May weather can be mixed - you can get great weather - but there is also a chance of rain. Easter is 29th Mar to 10th April in the UK but a little earlier, I think, for France. So mid to late April would avoid the Easter peak rates etc. Late June is more reliable, weatherwise, but I think that maybe a problem for those who already have plans to be in France in April / May. Maybe we can start another thread with names of who would like to come and the dates they prefer and we'll go with the most popular?
From a car hire perspective it would probably be worthwhile renting a couple of people carriers. I looked at the approximate rental price and it's ~ £85 / €107 for a Friday to Monday rental (£12 per person if we split the costs). A medium family car is £82 to hire for the same period so very little difference in price - though former will probably use more petrol).
Things to do and see. There are lots! I will put together some ideas for a full day and half day (seeing a few things in the same location - the Dordogne is a big region). If we have several people with vehicles then we don't necessarily all have to do the same thing. We can arrange to get together in the evenings - either at a local restaurant, a 'pot luck' / dinner at ours.
Katty,
watched all things related to Dordogne...
impressed!!! that is the Europe I am missing!
so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but how to get a visa?????????????????

I am not sure how this works, but I live in the south of Spain and would love to come to this meeting if it happens in April or May in France, as long as I know ahead of time. It is a 2 day drive from where I live, or I would look into train from here (Algeciras or Malaga to Madrid to France) and possibly pick up a car there. Please keep me posted.
What lovely proposal!!
Istanbul, Paris, beautiful places!!!
what about Barcelona in February.
I live in Barcelona, but I'm moving to Argentina in March.
I can organize many events, because I know the city very well, I really love Barcelona. I know all the places for visiting that are not in the guidebooks.
Moreover, there are a lot of CS here to have a couch.

I would love to attend if I can. I am in India until end of February, and I will look for future posts on this subject of 50+ meeting somewhere in the world.
What a wonderful suggestion Fate!
Just for money matter info. Airline tickets to most destinations are the cheapest 1Nov- 31Mar- low season, excluding 12 Dec- 8 Jan- Christmas, then shoulder season 1Apr- 31 May- and the pick season is 1 June to around 6 Sept, followed by 2 months of shoulder again.
for Costa Rica from USA, March is a spring break time, and many people with school kids are travelling.
We have never been to CS get away, but it would be lovely.
i will be reading this post regulary and maybe one day we can meet all the people I know from little photos and theit posts here.
Regards
Gina
Yes. I think that would be a great idea. I'm from Detroit area and perhaps a group of us Metro Detroiters could get a discount on a group airfare. I would love to go to Rome or Florence. They are both great places for a group 50+ couch surfers to stay and some of us who are single as well as others might want to get together and explore places together at least some of he time.
Hi all!!
It is very interesting offer. I'm from Poland (from Szczecin). This city near Baltic Sea and near Germany. Szczecin is interesting town. It has more more parks and most green. And the rich history as well as a lot of modern times. But now I live and work in UK....
Hi all anyone from New Zealand on here going to ant meet-ups.???
I would be interested, depending on where and when.
I would be interested in any proposal which took in the first two weeks in April. I was planning to head to Japan but the idea of a CS group event definitely appeals.

Hello, everybody,
So glad to see old friends. I am not a frequent visitor of CS site but I love it as it has acquainted me with such great people I've met in Istanbul. I would like to join the meeting everywhere but I'm afraid I still cannot go to Russia. In the first decade of June I'll be in Portugal. As I think arrangement of the meeting requires at least half an year taking into account hotels and air flights as it was in Istanbul. I hope we will agree on something that will be convenient for all.

Retiring tomorrow and immediately heading out to Asia for three months. I am a beginner in international travel so I have been reading posting and learning from this group. I enjoyed listening in on many interesting conversation here. Thank you.
I think I can make it to this international meeting if it is in April to June time frame. I plan to do extensive traveling for several years before looking for volunteer opportunities to engage myself.
I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area but decide to move up to the mountain (3.5 hr east of SF) after my retirement. I have a two bed room cabin up in the Sierra mountain. I enjoy various outdoor activities and will be very happy to host any one who wants to explore California outdoor activities.
Hi Ricky Tam....loved reading your post, esp since San Fr is still my favourite city. Studied there as a young girl and it still holds a charm to me. As you are headed to Asia do I presume that you will visit India too. If so and you need a couch in mumbai, get in touch. %Though I am headed in your direction in March/ April I could put you on to other couches. I too am looking forward to the 50+ meet up. Cheers to your retirement. And yes this is a great site...
Still gathering people and information for a March Costa Rica gathering. The subgroup can be found at http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=59573
Any other Costa Rica CS members want to weigh in (figuratively) on this?:)
Sharon
Katie,
I just turned in my office key today and officially retired this afternoon. I am sitting in SFO waiting for my flight to HK. I will have only 12 weeks this trip so I don't know if I will make it to India this time. Primary objective this trip is to set up base operation in HK. I will for sure look u up when I head over to your Area.
Ricky
Ricky...lucky you...Hong Kong is one of my favourite cities....comes second to Bangkok...lots of cs there as you must be knowing....so do give them all my love when you next have a get together with them....have had some super din sums with them, each timeI am there....also the snake restaurant wow or rather eeks!!

Tim,
Great ideas but are you willing to organise these events?
Currently 2 meetings already agreed [Costa Rica, March 2013 and France April 2013]. You would be welcome at either I'm sure. I'd agree that now another thread needs to be set up for any additional meeting ideas, preferably by someone who can organise the venue.
Seasons greetings

HA ha ha ha
You have had a very good idea!!!
When are you planning this meeting in NYC?
It is really a very nice and beautiful city. I was there in 2001, May.
So... a big place is YMCA, near Central Park. Has rooms ensuite ant not ensuite. Is a nice and clean place and a good location also.
There are another near Tribeca, I think, but no sure.

How about Rome in January or February?
I'm living in the vineyards south of Rome until March.
I could put up two people - more if you bring sleeping bags and air mattresses.
Otherwise France in early May would be good.
Do any members of this group live in or around Rome?
I live in the Olevano / Paliano area and go to Rome three times a week for my Italian course near Campo di Fiori. I'd love to meet some more local people, preferably to practice my Italian.
