What methods/approaches are the best ones in acquiring English?
Posted December 2nd, 2012 - 4:00 am by from Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Permalink)
There are so many educational events,CS upcoming meetings, where one must speak English well to be understood comprehensively.
2days before I've participated in this webinar:
A trip down the memory lane of English language teaching.
https://britishcouncil.adobeconnect.com/_a917587435/p8uphzoqspd/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal
then I've participated in 2 day UzTEA Annual Conference...
http://www.facebook.com/pages/UzTEA/115368175165530
my friend Gulniza opened her page too:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/382090228538802/
but these pages do not support Uzbek NNESs in learning...
feel that must master my English but HOW?

George, at the thread:
Where and When to meet up?!
http://www.couchsurfing.org/group_read.html?gid=2164&post=13849939
I've seen/read, that some CS would like to visit Uzbekistan.
Wonder: if someone has heard how are we here speaking English?! What are features of our English variety?

@LARRY11215
you've written:
@"By the way, about 20 years ago I had very interesting Jewish neighbors who had come to the US from Tashkent. I loved their food"!!
at the thread:Condiments and Character.
http://bit.ly/VtG9pg
we've discussed the issue of adding those Condiments, which make every national cuisine so specific...
wonder if you've felt those Condiments in the speaking style of your Jewish neighbors from Uzbekistan ?!
@J Carl, you've lived close to Central Asia, and, of course, have tasted our unique dishes, but what is your opinion as a linguist?!
@Darrell,being my guest, of course, today can differ our dishes from others...
@Karen S,
@"Is Uzbekness very similar to Turkish proper"? Linguistically yes, culturally only very partially..
I assume that today's English Varieties are English plus those Condiments we are adding while using this International means of communication.

J Carl,
I've just confirmed/and was glad to do this! that we are Really living in the centre of the Globe..
Moreover, we are staying in the very middle of Today's Balanced linguistic policy! We are speaking our Mother Tongue= Uzbek, our Regional Lingua Franca= Russian, and an International Lingua Franca= English...
hi J Carl,
Just hear the song so popular not only in Norway (hope in all Scandinavian countries and in the whole Europe too?!)...
"In the town of Samarkand".
Melody: Thorstein Bergman - Danish text: Poet
Original title: Whether you nå'nsin come fram till Samarkand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_IyAy86fQ&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLF639C21F6127AB3E
@"The song is not about Samarkand. It is a love song. Maybe the writer had a girlfriend from Samarkand. Maybe Samarkand is the symbol of an ideal place, like SHANGRI LA where dreamers want to go, because this place of the globe is SAFE!?
This is how some CS feel about Samarkand. It is a place they dream about. One day they will go there"...

Namaste, Raju,
@"It is so true though - travel to the various "English speaking" countries, and you soon discover that the same basic language is spoken so differently in all those places"...
Hmmm...what/which countries' basic language?!
was really surprised to read this Johnson's assumption:
Language families.Do you speak a Scandinavian language?
About Johnson. In this blog, named after the dictionary-maker Samuel Johnson, our correspondents write about the effects that the use (and sometimes abuse) of language have on politics, society and culture around the world.

Hi Halima!
Although not a native speaker of English but I have studied English as a mother tongue and am qualified to teach English as a foreign language. Would love to come to your part of the world one day and teach English to your ladies group.
Keep up the good work!
Hugs,
Meera.

Hope we meet soon perhaps in India.....or Tashkent???

Hello Halima --

First, I agree with another writer that your English is easy to understand ... it is certainly better than my few words of Russian, or Uzbek.

I did not read the complete thread, so please excuse any duplication of information.

A college student friend in China asked me about improving her English, and I suggested the following. I hope some of it is helpful. It is a rough list, not organized, and there might be some duplication.

Best wishes for increasing your comfort with speaking English.

If you want to communicate further, my address is

Regards,

Stephen

Dear Stephen,
first of all I wish You to be Healthy,Wealthy and Successful in the 2013 Year!
Hi Stephen,
thank you for so many sources for improving English!
at our thread called:"SPAGHETTI! with meatballs" you can read about my thoughts of being friends, who really help to improve!
@Cadence,
Am happy to greet you in the new year with Uzbek Salom..
At our thread” worrying about surfers these days” Glenn and Kris Hill have confessed:
@Yes, the CS technology has taken a turn for the worse. It is a sad development, indeed. But it cannot erase the wonderful connections we have already made and (hopefully) will continue to keep”.
I've shared with Amanda my opinions/concern about being only Hosting...and wanted to read about her being more and more picky!
@"The people who surf and never host are really clueless about the amount of effort that goes into being a host. I! used to feel guilty turning people down - but now I've become more and more picky. Maybe the people who only take and never give back will eventually get the message when their couch requests get turned down"?
then I've noticed that Christine43 is a Russian lover!
She is a member of some Russian groups:
Russia,Moscow,St. Petersburg,Moscow - Walk&Enjoy
And then:
My son with his son were in Christine43 area, they will visit MIT.
I cannot find CS from there, who would show them around.
And Christine43've PMed me,sent her # telephone...
Darrel and Marilyn advised us:
"weather would be a unserious/not smart reason for choosing a Uni. What is your grandchild studying? Main interest?
The competition will be ferocious".
@Marilyn,
@"MIT is one of our most prestigious. There is possibly no higher. The weather would be better at Stanford"...
of course, Stanford could be much preferred because of warm weather in Palo Alto"...
They both are right, we discussed many similarities between California and Russia at this thread:
If you could live in a foreign country, which country you would like to live in?
hi Cadence,
How do you like this continuation of the CS Spaghetti relations?!
Btw I try to inform our Uzbek Colleagues and Learners about all news in this area:

where this thread is included too

The best way to teach/learn English is hosting and surfing and exchange toughts, opinions, laughs, culture, personal issues (for those who feel the need to), even recipes etc etc etc :-)

It's as simple as that!

Pol didn't speak a word of English before we joined CS, and now he would survive anywhere on the globe (even without me and my talkative way of travelling ;-) )
