Four years ago I was in Iceland with 20 or so from 15 different countries potlucking a Christmas dinner thousands of miles from our families and familiarities. It was wonderful. Tonight I'm home with the cats after working the last 30 hours around the clock caregiving for my clients. We're celebrating with a hot rum toddy and take out Chinese food. Delightful. ;D I've had snow white Christmases, and Palm tree Christmases. They're all quite lovely. This one is special: it's my first without my mom. She was my best friend, best teacher, and always master creator of magical Christmases, however simple, to be remembered forever. They, and she, are with me tonight. You're so right about being there to enjoy: that sounds fantastically delicious. Winter around the world usually means serving roots and tubers, all considered in Asian cuisine as "Yang": potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, parsnips, yams, sweet potatoes, beets, kohlrabi) , as we crave the hearty combination of them (love the addition of broccoli, too). And, as a general rule, the more herbs the better. Good for you. Today I'm suddenly writing a comic book, spending the day with three delightful characters I dreamed up yesterday. Does that belong in the indulgence thread? Puzzles are great holiday activities! I just finished a 1,000 piece puzzle of a street scene in Italy. Should have bought two puzzles, lol. Now I need another one to do! @DanielaCal I would love the recipe for pasticio di lasagne. Is the besciamella sauce a white sauce? This year two of my sons made lasagne. One was very light, with plum tomatoes and cheese with cinnamon, and the other was very heavy with layers and layers of cheese and pasta. Both were good and love to see my sons,18 and 22 cooking together in the kitchen. Judy My Christmas Day starts with the girls opening the presents. Not a very rich Christmas gifts this year, just small ones, but well appreciated by everyone in my family. I cooked all yesterday afternoon. The most waited dish at Christmas is my top recipe of "pasticcio di lasagne". Here in Italy the lasagne can be very different from home to home, and often the recipe is an old family receipe. My personal one has around more than 50 years, but it takes 4 hours to do it, (included the time of cooking it in the oven)because every ingredient is home made, included the pasta and the besciamella sauce. Then in the afternoon. all my relatives, in turns, came to my home because of my mum who now lives with me, and she is the oldest in the family. My house is small, but today at 6 pm we were in 18, and everyone together had a 5 minutes Skype call with the only relative that could not join us, because he was working. Finally I am now alone, relaxing and going to sleep in five minutes Good night and may all your wishes and dreams become real and true..Lots of health, love and money to you all! Daniela I would like to wish the group a healthy, happy, and fullfilling New Year. I would also like to say ....When your heart weeps for what you've lost, let your spirit laugh for what you have achieved. All good things for 2013! I hope to be more active on this site in 2013. Let me wish all of you a most Happy and Healthy New Year. Perhaps I will meet some of you someday. Becky HAPPY NEW YEAR to All! What a great group of people - Hope some of you will consider coming to beautiful Portland, OREGON this summer. I always say that our summer usually starts on July 5th (as it fairly frequently rains on the 4th of July). I hope to get more active on this site in 2013. Best to all, Loie Hi Loie, I actually visited Portland last summer, as my son and his GF were living there (They've now moved on to NY) Portland is a real foodie town. The 3 outstanding things I noticed there: 1. A lot of eating going on. (food carts and restaurants abound) @. Nobody is fat in spite of all that eating. (lots of people running or riding bikes) 3. Hardly anyone glued to their cell phones as it is here in Silicon Valley. and no one talking while driving. I liked Portland, but alas, it would be too wet for me year round. |
