"The USA is almost impossible to travel in without a car, and is the most unsafe place I have ever been." OUCH! The US is a very big country and it depends where you live and how the transportation. Many New Yorkers don't own a car and are able to get around town just fine. To leave NYC there are good trains and the MEGA bus. I lived in New Orleans for 8 years without a car and got around fine. Sorry you felt so unsafe. It all depends where you live I guess. We live in a town where we don't lock our doors or cars and my kids leave their bikes outside at night. I would never make a blanket statement like, "France,or England is the most unsafe place I have ever been." Those are big countries with many varied city and towns. I think you mentioned you lived in the US. Where did you live? I hope you are recovering well from your surgery. I have taken Adirondack Trailways to Lake Placid and it was fine. The new thing is MEGABUS. A fellow CSer from NYC took it up to Toronto for $1.00 for our 50+ Toronto Filmfest a couple of years ago. My kids take it to visit friends at tcollege in Boston,Washington and upstate NY. The buses are clean and new. I think it is owned by a British Company and they have good prices. Hey Darrell, when was the last time you were in the Port Authority in New York? "it's famous for loiterers and drug sellers(and no doubt buyers) and muggings and I could go on and on and on and infinitum. "Why subject yourself to that? The personel (clerks, security cops) will not be able to discern your "visitor" status. They treat you abominably, the threatening atmosphere is menacing and no mistake". I can't agree with you on this one either. Since 9/11 we have so many NYPD cops and Army men in our bus and train stations they are totally safe. I have allowed my teenage kids to travel through there alone! The Port Authority Terminal is convieintly situated in the middle of Manhattan. If you had a wait you could walk outside to the best shopping, food and free people watching out on the street. I think it may be a matter of perspective here. Darrell I think you said you are from a farm in Indiana. I am from the NY metroploitan area. Your wife thought Chicago streets were crowded. We don't even notice crowded sidewalks. Millions and millions of people travel sucessfully through NYC everyday. Some of them even enjoy it! Judy This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. The people I met there were kind and generous. Only been there twice, but it's known for its "Southern Hospitality". I loved it there. http://www.exploregeorgia.org/#t_attractions And the peaches are out of this world! ;D Hit it, Ray: he sings it so well: maybe you've heard it??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRgWBN8yt_E Cherie This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. Most of what today is the Hampton's were Dutch settlements. Come see me on Long Island and I can take you there. When you are in Manhattan you will see many Dutch names and we honor our Dutch explorers. J This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. Flying into one country and out of another and leaving it 'up to the god's' to figure it out how you would get there. That is something I have done many times. I think that is why Tina,DutchDelight and many other women who are experienced travelers like to travel alone. Once I have the 'framework' of a trip planned I like to 'wing it'. It is sometimes harder to bring someone else along that needs precision. After my September trip to Berlin I decided to not travel alone for awhile because I had so much fun! I really wished I had someone to share the memories with. I met really great people, did really fun things and wish some of my family members or friends could have been with me! Looking forward to France in April to share the good times with! Judy Yes hotels are expensive in the USA and they add taxes a lot ,so even if you find a good price, think of adding more to it .We always book on priceline to get the cheapest fares but some are still around 150 dollars and even more . For example in Washington D.C.First we didn't expect to stay overnight but it was late.We were still at Lincoln Memorial , exhausted, watching the sun disappearing on the Potomac river so we checked priceline .They give us a 2 double queen room for 180 dollars ,not too bad considering it was right in Washington . When we arrived a few minutes later they asked for 60 dollars more and for parking the car we added 30 dollars. We managed to negociate the 60 dollars though. What a royal sleep we had as good as in the White House I'm pretty sure ! This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. Take out a map. The distances you want to cover are great. Accomandations are high. Try to stay with CSers and book the MEGABUS when available. Maybe stop in a travel agency have them help book an itinenry. J This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts. To see this full converstion, sign up or log in. I stayed downtown and felt trapped. It never felt dangerous. It might just be my interests, I love archtecture and people's stories, i.e. DC and New Orleans are favorite ciries. Maybe I'll give it a second chance someday with more research... Deborah This member has chosen to allow only Couchsurfing members to see their group posts.
