I think it's sad that anything she did brought on her murder, as you said:
"But there are many questions about her situation.
She rented a room at one of the worst districts of the city. Very cheap room. And a "dark" district with "dark" people.
On the other hand, she spent a lot of money - in cash.
She had an interesting travel itineary, came to Istanbul, went to Netherlands, and came back to Istanbul from Germany (a period of 4-5 days I think)."
Dilek,
WHY do you think anything she did was "wrong"????
You say, "Dark districts with dark people..spent a lot of money--in cash"...should we now accept ANY place not safe for women?????????
I don't think ANY of the "questionable" behavior you describe is "wrong".
I hear your words and realize you are subject to sexual discrimination, and now you think it was HER that beckoned what happened to her.
Dilek, there are those of us who think men and women are equal.
And NO woman deserves to be murdered, regardless of what she does, where she goes, what she wears, or how she behaves.

She's a photographer.
Why do you suspect of anything else?

Not to brag, but when traveling, I can easily drop 12,000 USD: watch me in April in Paris! LOL
I think our parameters are different., Dilek...
Honestly, that's not a lot of money...

Marilyn,
You ask:
"$12,000 US is a lot of money to me! How could you spend that much in a week?"
I haven't traveled in over 4 years.
How much have you spent traveling the last 4 years?
Did you go to India? Buenos Ares?

Thanks David for putting 'danger' in perspective. What are we afraid of? I don't think of the world as a dangerous place. Things happen. That is not going to keep me from travelling or being afraid. What happened to 'the world is smaller than you think?' Fear and worrying is so not worth it.
I thought Cherie's $12,000 was a typo. That is a lot of money! Even if you went on a wild and crazy Paris shopping spree who would want to carry any extra purchases around with you? Travelling light is the key to success.

No, it is not standard for the FBI to get involved in a missing American abroad. You can barely get the State department to acknowledge that an American is missing as they may say 'Anyone can go missing if they desire, it isn't against the law to go missing'.

Hey Gang,
Yeah, it's been a while since you've heard from me.
So sorry to hear about the traveler ... I haven't read the article, I've just read this thread ... and I don't think I want to either .. as I'm traveling alone as well and as usual.
I just spent 3 months in Ethiopia 'alone' and I'm now in Uganda, soon to be headed to South Africa then Ghana and home from there.
By the way, there is a CS event in SA that I will be attending ... they will be hiking and then a big meal ... the host has 45 beds available for any traveling guest. With that said ... I will be arriving early for a couch ... I noticed not much (or no) activity on his profile, however he seems like a honest fellow. I'll try to point you to the CS activity in my following contact ...
