If you enjoyed the series, Doc Martin, you might also enjoy William and Mary. Martin Clunes plays an undertaker in a relationship with a midwife also raising a family.
On the police/detective/whodunit front, Carolyn Quentin stars in a British one. (The name of the series escapes me.) A more gritty one set in Seattle is called The Killing.

I looked on Netflix and couldn't find a series named Silk. What is the premise and is it too new to be on Netflix yet?Anne

@Carl - I agree with you about Rome. Awesome series that ended all too quickly. Six Feet Under was super too. The last episode was a real tear jerker.
@Cadence - We're hooked on Downton Abbey as well. I get it over here in Thailand, via slightly less than legal means, almost as soon as it airs.
From what I've been able to scope out, PBS is running Downton a season behind the premium channel that produces it. We watched the end of Season 3 at Christmas and are almost ready to begin Season 4.

@Cadence - Yep, it's the HBO series I'm referring to. We bought it in Bangkok a couple of years ago but once we got started my girlfriend made us watch the whole deal in two nights. I'm for making them last a bit longer but she would gladly stay up until the wee hours to watch a good series. LOL
At the same time I bought The Wire because of all the critical acclaim it had received. Besides, many of my friends loved it. I made it through about 2 seasons before giving up. It just didn't grab me.
I'll check out Band of Brothers. I'm a WWII buff (it's a boyhood affliction), so it will probably be a good one for my particular tastes.
