I would welcome you if your travels are bringing you to north Italy. I live in the alps, in a small city called Merano. Anyway enjoy Italy it is really a nice country with the magic of diversity between north and south and anyway don't miss Rome - I love that city . Why Empoli? and what about Venice I think it is much more beautiful than Empoli - a very special place.

Thank you for your offer. Unfortunately I do not plan to be that far up north in Italy this trip. Perhaps next time.
I plan on staying in Empoli as it is central to Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca with good and frequent train connections. No other reason. Empoli is just a base for these 4 places that I wish to go to.
I considered and debated on Venice and then finally dropped it. This time I'm doing the Milan-Rome (perhaps till Pompeii) stretch. If I add more places then the stay in each place gets too short and I will only end up going to the main places in the town. I will not get to walk around the small by-lanes and take in the sights and smells of the town.
