As it so happens, I am in lovely San Diego at this very moment visiting my father.
There are many things to do here. One highlight is Balboa Park and its many museums. I am not going to give you a list here because it is info that you can easily find by googling WHAT TO DO IN SAN DIEGO or something like that. But Balboa Park and the world famous zoo are two of my favorite destinations. I am sure your niece will be able to guide you.
One lovely CSer that I met who lives in the San Diego area is http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/taurus09/.
Just do a couch search in San Diego and where it asks minimum age, put in whatever you think is a "mature" age and contact people. This is the most successful way of meeting people in your age range. Have a wonderful trip!
