Looking for a sailing trip Australia to NZ

Hi, I am an Australian heading to New Zealand around January/February.
I would really like to make the crossing by sea instead of by plane, so I'm looking for any sailing ship or other vessel that might accept a passenger or deckhand. I have recently started learning how to sail a 16" catamaran but as yet have only a little experience.

Is this the right season to be trying to find a boat sailing in this direction?
I would prefer to leave from Melbourne but would consider any east coast port.
I realise that Sydney - Auckland might be a far more likely proposition.
Any extra info would be appreciated.

Annually September-November. Cairns Australia (Yorkeys Knob Boating Club) to the Lousiades Archiplelago in Papua New Guinea. 16 yachts participated in 2012 and raised between them over 10,000 Kina, took over 100 bags and boxes of medical and educational supplies and contributed over $15,000 AUD to the community paying for Rally events. Further, donations from past rally participants means the Rally contributes almost $35,000 to the impoverished community through donations and community payments for events.

Darwin Dili Yacht Rally

Started 9 July 2011 at 1100 hours, Darwin Harbour, Australia and finishes in Dili Harbour, Timor-Leste. The course will be from the Start Line in Darwin Harbour, Australia, leaving Jaco Island to port, to the Finish Line off the city of Dili, Timor-Leste, a distance of around 426 NM. The Sail Timor-Leste Darwin Dili Yacht Rally is a web based event, organised and managed using the internet and email only.

Annual event in late July from Darwin to West Timor, continues to Bali. Organized by PORLASI (Indonesian Sailing Federation), participants obtain compulsory Indonesian cruising permit as part of the entry fee.

Hi Christine, thanks for the contacts and information, it is an excellent starting point and very helpful. New Zealand is looking closer than ever.
And yes, I am definitely interested in sailing to Timor island, so thanks for including the rallies leaving Darwin too.
