Hi all! I'm traveling across the country and will be in Alabama the 11th through the 18th. Hunstville first with a friend then Montgomery. Anybody have any fun suggestions of things to see or do while I'm here? Thanks!

US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. If you have contacts at a NASA contractor (Boeing, etc.) they can get you free tickets, but it will take time. Huntsville Depot -- taken by the Union in the civil war and used as a prison for a short bit.

Tuscumbia/Florence: General Joe Wheeler's house, Hellen Keller (house?). Check out the dams on the way through; there isn't a visitors center anymore but Wilson is large on a scale met only by Grand Coulee.

Sloss Furnace in Birmingham. Tannehill, and Brierfield. The center of steel production for the Confederacy and even earlier.

Vulcan, a statue over Birmingham ($6).

Civil Rights museum, 16th st Baptist Church (you've seen pictures, it still stands), Kelly Ingram park.

The White House of the Confederacy in Montgomery (I think it's Alabama's old governor's mansion).

There's a few other places that come to mind in pictures, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

While in Montgomery, stop at the visitor's center at Union Station across from embassy suites downtown. They have videos, brochures, and guides that can help put together an itenerary for you based on what you like. Downtown has a lot of attractions so if you like to walk start there. The Alley station, riverwalk park, and Renaisance Hotel downtown are good spots to chill or grab a drink with locals and out of towners..

Come on down to Mobile for the 18th and experience Mardi Gras! Mobile is recognized for celebrating the first Mardi Gras in the states, back in 1703, and we've been rocking it ever since. The 18th is the night of the first parade here, and there are three more on Saturday if your schedule is flexible.

Unfortunately we personally will already have company in town on Friday and will be out of town on Saturday, but there's a great local couchsurfing community in Mobile.
