Accomodation
Posted December 1st, 2012 - 4:21 am by from Toronto, Canada (Permalink)
Hi everyone!
I was planning to join this group when my boyfriend and my dog arrive on January, but the thing is that I'm having problems to rent an accomodation. One of them is the dog... but the other one is my situation. I have a work permit, but I don't have a job yet. I don't have money problems, but my Canadian credit history started one month ago. I have never had a debt or ask for credit in my home country.
I've try everything: with roommates, apartment (rental office), basement (with landlords)... and I'm getting worrier. So, guys, if you know something about a place that is pet-friendly and where I'm not going to have so many barriers to rent, please, let me know. I'd be very grateful.

I hope to have your tips or suggestions.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Julia

Hey julia,

I think you might be having hard time finding a place because you are not here yet and having a dog may just confound things.

I think try to get a couchsurfing who can host you (all of you and the dog) and then start looking for a place when you are physically here.

Yes dog owning makes it hard to find a place but if the landlord is a dog owner, usually it is a good luck.

there is also a group for housing in TO which some people have dogs/pets and you may find a roommate there.

good luck

Thanks for your answers!
Sorry, but I didn't explain myself correctly. I arrived 2 months ago, exactly the 3rd of October (I haven't change my address in CS because I'm living with a friend at the moment). And I've been looking for a job and an apartment at the same time. My boyfriend and our dog will arrive at the end of January.
I think that the best way to find something is with a direct contact with a landlord, because through rental office they ask always for the same requirements, and my Canadian credit history is 1 month and a half old. Maybe with a landlord I can achieve an agreement to make sure that I'm going to pay every month, for example giving 6 months in advance Do you agree?

I know that the purpose of this group is not about this... I also try some formulas through CS Toronto apartments, rooms for rent or shared houses. I wanted to have your opinion because you are dog's owners.

Cheers!

Actually and please do not qoute me, but I think if you already live in the place, you can have a dog (after you move in).

I lived in my Apt for a long time and then got the dog...and OK my landlord is a dog lover but still, you cannot be evicted for simply having a dog. You will be evicted if your dog is distrbutive to your neighbors.

In other words, get a place for yourself, and then oops your b/f and his dog moved in. Just make sure you do not sign anything that says SPECIFICIALLY NO DOGS. you do not need to tell them ahead of time you will be getting a dog. But also be realistic of the place if you have a big dog...naturally.

You can google some confirmation of this information re toronto tenants and having dogs etc.

I think as others said already, new comer, no job, most landlords may be hesitant to take you in but you may be better off sharing space with others until you gain enough references or employment and then find another place in the summer.

good luck

try this website: myhood.ca This place provides a lot of places that are managed by the owners. I got my apt from there 6yrs ago.

It is not that easy to find the actual owner or landlord to a building...depends what kind of place you are looking for but most places are managed by other than the owners.

I live on Bloor on storefront and deal with the owner...and agree much easier than management office going by the paper!

also take a walk about the hood you want to live and see if there any numbers on the windows...so old fashion but I swear people still do this! LOLO I just saw one the other day on ST. Helena south of Bloor while walking my dog...nice house too.

Thank you so much for your tips!!! I was trying in craiglist (with scam attempts), viewit (without "pet filter" in the search engine), housing services... yes, the best way is directly with the landlords, so I'll check myhood.ca.

And I noticed that the old fashion way of some landlords sometimes works better than Internet sources...

You know, some friends did the same, first rent, and then bring the dog. And they recommended me to do the same, but I was afraid to be evicted when my dog come to the house, so I asked from the beginning that there is a dog.

Once more, thank you for your time and your useful tips ;)
