I'm not as up on the covered bridges in Vermont as other folks are likely to be. I don't know, for instance, which bridges have been harmed or destroyed by Irene. However, here's a pretty nice guide from Vermont Living Magazine that will give you a place to start:

There's a bridge with a parking lot and a little park so you can walk around near the one in Marshfield, just off Route 2. I just drove by that on Saturday and it's there, and it's such a lovely, rural setting full of Vermont charm. It's across from THE BIGGEST OLD BARN IN THE WORLD (ok, it's probably not the biggest, but my god that thing's huge). I love the Plainfield/Marshfield area. Really a wonderful drive taking Route 2. :)

There are NO toll roads anywhere in Vermont.

You should also try to get a stop in at the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps offices near Richmond. They've restored one big old barn and are in the process of restoring another. :) They're aweome :)

Hello!
I know that none of the covered bridges in SE VT (Bennington/Wilmington area) were damaged from the flooding last fall, but it doesn't look like you are going to be in that area.
BTW I would suggest maybe taking rte 7 south down to Rutland and head east to NH from there (or some alternative roads) rather then taking the interstate Hwy. the Champlain valley is really beautiful and if you have the time you will get a much better "feel" for VT on its country roads

Enjoy yourself! stop for local ice cream :)
