Hi David!
Glad to hear that you're interested in the veggie way of life. I turned vegan a couple of years ago and I can honestly say it's one of the best things I've ever done in my whole life!
I am so much healthier now then I ever was and much happier knowing my diet is reducing as much as possible harm caused to other sentient beings.
Suprisingly I've also discovered that I'm enjoying my food a lot more than I did before turning veg. I used to be a very plain eater whereas now I explore new flavours on a daily basis!
I guess for some people the hardest thing about turning veg is the social repercussions but from my experience most people are very understanding, often curious, about the lifestyle choice. It can be hard at times on relationships (my boyfriend is a meat eater and when we first started dating my veganism was an issue for him), but if your partnership is worth anything you'll get through the hurdles. My boyfriend hates to admit it, but he's beginning to really enjoy eating veg when I'm around ;).
In Melbourne you are spoilt for choice when it comes to turning vegetarian. There are so many great places - in Brunswick, St Kilda...oh just everywhere.
If you're unsure here's a few vegan (not vegetarian...but I'm guessing you won't mind) facebook pages

Oh and happycow.net lists restaurants all over the world that are veg*n friendly.
Cuisines that are the most veg friendly are probably Indian, Thai and Lebanese - but most restaurants will cater for vegetarians so I doubt you'll have any problems!
I actually live in Sydney at the moment but I'm down in Melbs quite a lot to visit my boyfriend and I'll be moving in with him at the beginning of December so if you want to catch up I'd be happy to show you some good places - just send me a message!
Hope this has helped you on your path to going veg! You won't regret it!
Juliet
