Sorry I got that one wrong. CS messed up on that one. I guess you are stuck. There is no such thing as membership in places. Any member logged into the website can post, and anyone visiting the page can read (at least the posts which have not specifically been set to private, one-by-one).
Exists "Follow" and "no follow", I think.
But... in the case of the groups that you have joined in the past, you cant change them, I dont see option. This groups appear on your profile always, you cant leave it.

I confirm that it is impossible to leave a group which has been converted to a place.
For all other groups you can replace the XXXX in the below string with the group's ID and and paste the completed link into your browser:
https://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=XXXX&leave=1
You find that ID by putting your cursor over the link to the group in your group list at https://www.couchsurfing.org/groups.
This works for all groups but those who have been converted, unfortunately.
So only CS can help you here.
