Who knows what license you need in SE Asia?

Hi,

Does anyone know if its possible to buy a bike and ride legally in Asia with only a full car license? I have a learner bike license but thats prob not much use. I am thinking of a C90 and in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam.

Any recent experience with this would be much help.

regards

Joe

Hi Joe. I have a cs group here in Saigon called Saigon Bikers which is aimed at helping all bikers in VN.
Regarding the legalities; you CANNOT cross the borders (legally) as ownership is nigh on impossible to achieve-a nice bribe usually gets one across though, but then, in the other country you become a MAGNET for police with foreign plates...lots of little bribes. So, that call is entirely up to you...if you bring a bike from NZ then that is another story.

AS for riding in VN, officially you need a bike license but it is overlooked mostly, again, a 5 dollar bribe is acceptable as a license. Good luck and drop in for a beer here in SAigon. cheers, Graham
