IMHO, B&B, no idea about the place.
When Rosemarie and I went to Hallstatt, she found a private cottage....B&B.....lovely place....a kind and gentle land-lady....maybe we could look at something like that?
What we need to know is more places on the net...where such information is available......then we start looking seriously....
...still not too sure if I'm coming...but it will be fun to plan....

I am not familiar enough with Italy to be of much help with the deciding where to go or the type of accommodation.
Despite this, I hope to make the trip and will contribute with the planning in any way possible...just let me know how I can be of assistance.
As Kris said, heading to India afterward would be fantastic!
I've never been and it is on my bucket list.
cheers

I'm following this thread with great interest. I hope that it all works out and that I can join you in Italy.
I've never been to Europe proper (save a trip to England in 1975), so I'll be a traveling virgin (!). I very much like the idea of a CS gathering so as to meet and spend time with interesting folks.
As for the itinerary/agenda, I like the idea of renting something in a smaller town and having a quieter introduction. However, perhaps there may be a town or two with train access to a big city such that during or after our gathering some of us could peel off to see more things. I probably wouldn't set up a city trip for just me (too chicken) but if I met some folks who wanted to go into a city for a day or two that would be great. I'd love to travel with others, even neophytes, so that we can get lost together!
I'm a sculptor and would love to see big art, especially sculptures, which is likely to be somewhat absent in the countryside. Also, I live in the country, and would love to get a city-fix while I'm there.
I'm happy to come for two weeks or more -- it's a big deal for me to travel so having a big trip is great.
That's my two cents. It may change to three later. Meeting people, eating great food and drinking great wine and seeing inspiring art comprise my agenda.

Meher, darling.
I was in Rome and Ference last may for 5 days only in Italy but it was so little time for Italy and I have just left my heart there. My experience is so small, so I can't be useful but I think our CSer Helmut has had wonderful trip throughout Italy. May be we will ask him how has he organized this trip (as I guess it was individual trip).

Hello Meher, first let me say that I am hoping that possibly we will meet during my trip to India in December? Will you be home? I am staying with Sudhir for a few days.
Secondly I think that Tuscany is the most romantic ideal of Italy and me personally I would love to just position myself in an old stone farmhouse and enjoy the company of others, outdoor dinners and late breakfasts, wine tasting, if excursions were necessary then rent cars or a bus/es? if needed for the day. Tuscany was your first suggestion and personally I think we should stick to that idea and not get carried away with suggestions of everywhere else. Tuscany is something everyone must 'do' at least once in their life. If it is decided that the group will go elsewhere then perhaps I can meet you in late September as you first suggested and we can enjoy the area with those who would also like to commit to the area as the chosen destination? Or meet up with the group later in october? Just a suggestion.
Here is an example of the nitty gritty.....
I looked on Air BnB and here is an old stone house with six rooms for 12 people, 70euro/100 Australian $ a room a day/night. I don't know what people consider reasonable to pay??? The rooms are available at this moment for the dates and the ammenities are fantastic, the view breathtaking and the reviews positive, food preparation possible, indoors and out, and people can book separately too for a week or two or just a few days.
As an Aussie, driving 80 kilometres to pick people from an airport or to look around is less k's than my morning trip to work. The link to the map is there, the property is on a hill and not far from Florence, 4o mins, so a car would be necessary, but it is a must in Tuscany at least to access the farm house. Perhaps we could put a call out to all hosts in the area who might offer some form of transport for a day or so??
Just putting it forward as a possiblity and it was the first one I looked at on the search, others near bye I'm sure.

Here is the blurb...
The old stone house is near the town of Vinci where Leonardo Da Vinci was born. Located on the slopes of Montalbano in the heart of Tuscany [Montalbano del Chianti road] ... delicious wine and olive oil! We have 6 en suite double rooms available. This 4-level-house with a common kitchen and lounge is decorated with art from all over the world and has warm colours: a perfect place for art lovers! The new swimming pool is ready together with a lovely terrace with an amazing view on the valley, ideal for breakfast, cocktails and dinners. The location is perfect; you can reach Florence within 40 mins and towns like Lucca and Pisa within an hour and only 20 mins from Pistoia,
The daily room rate is 70 euros [two people can share the room].
PLEASE CONSIDER THAT WE HAVE 6 ROOMS AVAILABLE FOR OUR GUESTS AND AIRBNB CALENDAR REFERS TO ONE ROOM ONLY, SO PLEASE CONTACT US EVEN IF YOU SEE THAT FOR THE PERIOD REQUESTED THE ROOM IS NOT AVAILABLE, MOST LIKELY IT IS. THANKS

A thought on $ handling: Villa seems to be expensive (7000€/16person), 16 persons need 2 large cars (50€/day) +food +$spending= $200 USA per day. Is the Villa willing to collect rent from us individually? If no , one of us needs to be responsible for large sum (€7000). I'm comfortable to rent a car be liable for the car, but not for the rent.

Here's out of left field...
What about a cruise in that area? We book our own rooms, food is included, usually exercise/spa facility, guided tours available at ports of call, unlimited options.
Come and go as we please, have all the time to be together IF we want, while someone else is serving all of the meals, cleaning our rooms, etc
There's usually lots of entertainment (live, cinema, art, etc.), included, too.
Daily cost for me is a good deal @ $100 USD for cruise which includes all of the above.
Just a thought...

LOL!
I'm lazy and want to spend my time interacting with each other. That's the whole point: meeting up with those 50+ in this thread.
Let someone else get us there, take care of us there, feed us there, entertain us there...
THEY know what they're doing: the best tour possible of the area.

As I said, my goal is to spend time in a lovely area with other couchsurfers.
"Tuscany" is romantic and sounds great: bat as far a specific location, not important...that region is just fine. Or some other region.
I thought a cruise allows us to get rid of the money handling, food/grocery situation, driving and car rental.
We just spend time together with the opportunity to be apart, too.

A transatlantic cruise would be fun. There are "repositioning" cruises so the prices are good since their objective is to not let the ship sail empty.

Wowwwww my God !
i am tottaly lost !!
Traveling at the moment in Brazil , I didn't realize you were posting here in this new Tuscany 2012.
As I was very busy planning my trip to Rio, I used to take a glance to Meher´s initial post, and saw few comments !
Now I see a lot of new comments I missed.
Meher...so a little world this is. Flaminia had the good idea to introduce me to a brazilian CS and what a surprise I had; he was talking about somebody called MEHER ,,, with whom he traveled to Istambul , and I was so surprised , this world is a little villa ...jaja
How could I imagine my new dear friend from India, met in real this new friend in Rio who appeared in my life thanks a new new CS , is this active in traveller 50s+ as Flaminia is!
She always have something clever to comment , and being italian it could be a terrible lose if she decline to join us. ohhhhhh...
well, well, I am happy to see still there are so many people interested in visiting Tuscany.
Now, I am quite busy ,but I will keep in touch with you, and hope we finally be able to reach a good point, most of us will be satisfied. Never everybody , of course, but we are doing the effort to make it possible.
Let´s keep the joy !

I agree 7500Eu is high for 16 people. I just want to let you all know about this "data point". It is cheaper to stay in Hostel on my own than this villa.
