My suggestion would just be: don't have a plan.
Hitchhike south for a while, or wherever else your rides take you. Take a tent with you aswell, for in July and august, weather is pretty good and you could sleep outside on a beach or behind some bushes easily. Make up your plan as you go along! Go where you feel like going at the moment!

Me and 2 friends started hitchhiking like this, our goal was the bridge of Avignon. We dropped that idea allong the way and just hitchhiked wherever we felt like going. We met allot of crazy and fun people along the road who offered us a place to stay, food, etc etc...

It was allot of fun.
You have to be up for not having a plan, but if you don't have a plan, nothing can go wrong. You have nothing and everything you do, or people you meet along the way are a gift.

Do not buy an interrail ticket unless you want to waste money and make your trip much more difficult (they come with a lot of conditions). If you are under 25, buy a Carte 12-25 (50 E) for cheaper tickets and shop around on voyages-sncf.fr for your tickets.

Train stations are a good place for experimental travel. Try always picking the destination with the longest name, or always the 8th destination on the board, or try going to the ticket booth and asking for the exact same ticket as the person before you.

Or how about meeting the mayor in every city you go to ?

This may not be what you are looking for.....but I have visited orphanages in my travels. Watching children with absolutely nothing smiling at you is worth the effort.
