Travelling to the Dordogne
We are located in St Pardoux d'Ans (part of the commune of St Pantaly d'Ans). To find the hamlet on Google type in 'St Pardoux d'Ans 24640'
Travelling to the Dordogne
The nearest airports from us are:
Bordeaux - 2hrs ( http://goo.gl/maps/sVhtx)
Limoges - 1hr 26m ( http://goo.gl/maps/hlzBn)
Bergerac - 1hr 21m ( http://goo.gl/maps/h7xPW)
IMPORTANT
If you are arriving by air and hiring a car you must arrange to pick it up at the airport. Public transport in the Dordogne is virtually non existent and taxis are very expensive (Unlike the US and Canada, car is not more expensive to pick up at the airport rather than 'downtown').
Can those planning to join the meeting add their mode of arrival and, if flying, their proposed flight dates, times and arrival airport etc. on this thread?
For those flying to Paris CDG you can take the TGV to Angouleme. From Angouleme you can connect to Perigueux where we should be able to pick you up.
Likewise there is a 'jetbus' shuttle service from Bordeaux airport to the railway station where you can get a train to Perigueux.

Just to clarify re public transport. There are rail services between major cities but local bus services to the various villages and towns in the area are virtually non existent.
Perigueux is our nearest city for rail connections.

Just to remember that people more than 60yo pays less 30% in French trains. When buying remember to choose this tariff.

I shall take the train to Perigueux. (My route from London is undecided: I might take the train all the way.) I do not drive.
How many miles is it from Perigueux to where people are staying? If it is not too far, I shall walk.
I shall bring an air bed and sleeping bag, and I would be interested if anyone in the group has a patch of floor I could put my air bed on, otherwise I shall seek accommodation through the usual channels. I am even tempted to invest in a tent if there is a camp site nearby.
I am almost ashamed to admit I have never been to the Dordogne and know almost nothing about the area, but am keen to learn and experience.
I have met three delightful members of the group but not attended any of the meet-ups, so I have no idea what I am getting into, which is no doubt part of the fun. I hope I shall be tolerated.
I am so excited. I needed a trip to look forward to. And to get a chance to meet the people behind these marvelous posts! Now, to work on the budget to squeeze some fun money...and decide what house projects can be delayed.
Here's to April in France!
Deborah
Also will be heading there overland on my way down to Spain with backpack and tent,I realize our kind hosts may get overwhelmed with requests but I have a tent and know how to use it
I have been looking for somewhere to kick start the new year and this looks ideal.

I have started another thread with accommodation information ( here). I posted about the information about campsites in this thread as a few people had mentioned camping.

I am also planning to go to Spain before or after and renting a car when I can't find a train or bus. So looking forward to this meetup at Kathie and Richard's place in France.

Yes Marion - last weekend in April. We are still debating how long to come for and whether to drive or fly :). Since Richard retired, for the first time in a long while we have the chance to stay longer and drive slowly and enjoy the journey :).

I have had to change my plans and now fly in to Bordeaux on 27th - not sure how I am getting to the meet as I don't drive.
Anne
Anne
I worry that if you arrive on the 27th you may miss much much of the meeting as it starts the previous day?
I know - I am gutted but just cannot get there any earlier. I had booked my flight and everything - just so careless in not checking dates carefully!

At least I shall get to the restaurant for dinner!!
Anne
Annie - not to worry. Lots of people will be touring in the region after the meet-up.

I plan to fly into Bordeux airport and take the 'jet bus' shuttle service from the airport to the railway station where I will get a train to Periguex.

thanks,Marion. Haven't bought my tickets yet. Kind of playing a waiting game to see if there is a sale on AF. Don't want to wait too long though.
