Choosing the destination and dates
Posted December 3rd, 2012 - 6:58 pm by from Santa Rosa, United States (Permalink)
Hi, Sharon,

Initially, I loved the idea of coming to Costa Rica. Then I just read Flaminia's thoughts about coming to Costa Rica and she mentioned there not being much to do beyond the few days of our gathering and I thought I'd check with you. Pardon my ignorance about the area. What activities can you recommend beyond the meeting days? For me, the trip would have to be at least 2 weeks, to justify the travel expense. I could combine it with another location if it wasn't too expensive to get there.

Someone mentioned Argentina - Buenos Aires. There, we would have access to city, country and ocean. What are your thoughts about going there? It sounds wonderful, too.

I was just counting up the number of people interested in coming to Costa Rica and it looks like more than 10, so far. The dates vary, though. Early March, late April, May. It looks like you prefer March/April.

I'm looking forward to the meeting. I'm in California but would be happy to help organize or do some research.

Where do we go from here?

Wow!! Between you both, Sharon and Patty, you have described heaven. Now its finding a date everyone can attend. (Plus all the work of planning activities, coordinating, researching places to stay, etc. etc.) End of April is my choice, but I might be able to make it earlier.

April will be fine if I host only in my own home. March is better for me because there's another house on farm that I can make available for guests. Usually all 4 houses are rented, but I can hold one out unrented for a week in March because a family will be moving out on March 1, and I can list it as available for the 2nd week in March or so, and not lose more than the week's rent.

The other consideration is that early March is a nice break after a long winter. April is already spring in the US and Europe, and the France meeting is taking full advantage of that. If I weren't returning from France on Feb 22, I'd be there hanging out with my friends in the Dordogne:)

I'm open to comments and suggestions.

Hi all,
Now this all sounds like just the thing to get me motivated to organise my late winter trip to the sun!
Costa Rica has been on my wish lst for many years but never seem to get it togther. So I'm up for this and would like to spend some time exploring the country and use the CS meet up as the catylyst and date setting decision makers. Just need to get somewhere for my dog to stay whilst I'm away!!

No plans at the moment as am busy organising my own Christmas event here see link to my recent message. http://tinyurl.com/c2p432d
Sorry I'm fully booked now!

So I'm no stranger to organising events or travel using CS and consider myself able to contribute usefully to any group/company I might find myself in.

I would need to book flights but my intitial thoughts are to arrive in country, spend 2 days in the capital - preferably with a CS'er - then come on to the meet up (2/3 days??). After which I'd want to set off on a trip around the country taking in the best bits for 2 weeks before coming back to the cold in England. I'd be happy to join up with someone for that 2 weeks and maybe someone else coming will want to do a similar thing for some or all of that time?

Sharon
I'm happy with 1st March as the start day of your 'event', its a Friday so we could make it a long weekend leave Monday/Tuesday?? I will look at flights from London around 26/27 Feb to see what is possible. But obviously not book anything until you confirm that this will happen. However I think you just have to say right we have 1/2/3 people happy with these dates and so that is when it will be! Others will then arrange their travel/life plans around it.
so go for it and lets make it happen.

I look forwards to meeting up with all of you and sharing an amazing tropical experience, good food and lots of laughter!

Happy Christmas..

Steve

Hi Steve and Betsy. Betsy, I'm not sure what your question is. Do you mean, is the meeting a private group, or is this list a private group? The list is open and is a subgroup of the 50+Travellers Group. The Costa Rica meeting isn't closed, either. If someone on the list has a partner or friend who wishes to attend, it's easy enough to join the list or add oneself to the friend's profile and change it to "several people". I think:)

What I'm narrowing this down to is making a house or two houses available for the first week in March. I'll be repeating myself, but, again, there are the following couches in the two houses...although things sometimes change. There is a queen bedroom and a single bedroom (small) on the first floor of our own house. There is also a queen bedroom, a single bed, and a window bed in a second home on the same property...our farm in the low mountains at the edge of the Central Plateau. Both guest areas have cooking facilities and bathrooms, as well as linens/tableware, etc. There are also extra mattresses and perhaps even another bedroom with a trundle bed...sleeping two more...depending on the plans of our daughter. We could accommodate 6 to 8 easily, and 2 or 3 more without much inconvenience.

Steve (and others)...our farm is only one 40 minute bus ride from San Jose, so it's possible to stay on the farm and explore San Jose if cutting down on hotel expenditures is important.

I'll try to get a definite head count this week, and start answering more practical questions about flights/airport transportation, specific room arrangements (double rooms go to couples first, e.g.).

I'm inclined toward having a general shared area (probably the guest rooms in our own home plus the gallery porch) plus the separate bedrooms for a degree of privacy. At other meetings there's been a felt need to get away from each other at times:)

Keep information and questions coming, and please post here when you have tickets. We're assuming March 1 to March 7 for availability of couches...while realizing that some people will stay for only part of that time. It should all work out.

Hi. Ken Ferris here, from near Seattle. I could really see me going to Costa Rica in early March or so for a few days. I think it sounds great! I can't cook but I can sleep anywhere and would be more than willing to chip in for eats, drinks, etc.

I can use some help here. I think this post will show up as a reply to AARNEXIA. If so, how do I make it so it is just another post at the bottom of the thread? It can't be that hard but I don't see it. Thanks!

Ken
