World phone service?
I have just landed in Sweden. The phone service providers here have everything on lock down.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a versatile phone for doing an around the world trip? This is becoming a bit frustrating and looking expensive.
I have been using skype where I'm staying but that doesn't help me meet up with people in town.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Outgoing calls are certainly not as cheap as Skype, but incoming are free. The SIM card should work with an unlocked phone, but you can also order a new phone from them. Also, I read somewhere that you can keep your own phone # which is great.
Thank you for the suggestion! I found a similar website earlier today but I was wondering if it was legit or not. I'm glad someone can vouch for it. :)
Yes, this one is tested :) Which one did you find?

I have a 4 band phone which works with every band on the world. I used it in the USA, in Hungary and now in Germany. I always buy a local SIM card cause I stay months in countries.
Just an idea: While you are in the EU, you can buy a SIM in any country and use it in other countries cause calling in the EU is not expensive (receiving a call costs cca 0,12 EUR).
Have fun and safe trips!
thanks for your tips, guys
what is a lock down?
concerning those international card: what is the rate for a min? they say a regular country rate, but I thought the country rate varies from provider to provider? they offer this discount call, for which you need to pay monthly, but it seems only to be for europe
do you think that buying an internat. card will pay off? it costs 29bucks, and local cards are for free or very cheap. the rates for a min can be either the same or lower. the only thing you save is that you dont pay for incoming calls.
what is roaming? you dont pay roaming if you use a local card, dont you?
@Nicole, what is that second website you were talking about?
another question concerning phones: is it possible to buy a cheap phone in asia which can be used in whole asia? how do I find out which phone is international and which is not?
thanks in advance :)

That's a good point. It just makes it hard to meet up with hosts or other CSers if you don't have a number where they can reach you.
What Ive decided to do after all my research is just call people through skype over free wifi and text people with the app iTim. A local number is only $18 for 3 months through skype and it allows people to call in and leave a voice mail.
@rafael: Maybe it's still a bit hard to totally detach. I've come a long way. It's not as easy as I thought it would be.

1. Buy a cheap, unlocked phone
2. Buy a SIM card in every country
