Volunteer on a farm in northern India
Hi guys,
My grand mum lives in a farm in northern India (U.P) close to the himalayas, close to a tiger reserve and a very beautiful forest. She has cattle, dogs, fishery, apiaries and fields which have seasonal crops like sugarcane, wheat, rice. We grow our own pulses, vegetables and herbs in the garden around the house too. We use bio-gas for cooking. So all the ingredients to the food are absolutely fresh. Its a road not travelled by tourists so its quite pure & untouched. There is constant work on the farm and we're also trying to rebuild some eco cottages. As a volunteer, you will get fresh food and a space to stay, also we can help with local travel, there's a lot to learn about traditional food & farming. We're open to new ideas & energy flowing in.
:)
Hi Nandita, Im interested in it, would you pls tell me more? How can I join it?

Hi Juliane,
Thank you for writing in, we usually need help all year round, its a farm and there is constant work on the fields, in the orchards with the animals, where ever we think or you think you can fit in.
Hello,
Thank you for writing in, we usually need help all year round, its a farm and there is constant work on the fields, in the orchards with the animals, where ever we think or you think you can fit in.
There aren't the conveniences of a city since its quite rural, but you have fresh air and fresh food, which you can cook on a wood fired stove too if you like. You can let me know when you will like to come and I can give you more details about the work most needed at that time.
For eg. right now we need help sowing wheat and sugarcane.
Great!!!! I wanna help aswell!!!
I'm planing to go to india next autumn/winter and stay for half a year.
and now my flatmate found your post! Great!!!
Hi Isabella,
Winter is a great time, its my favorite season to be there, also since we have a sort of summer almost all year round the winter is really welcomed.
We'll have had more volunteers by the time you're here so we can give you a more structured plan of where we'd need your precious help.
do keep in touch!
Hello!
This sounds great, I was just looking for somewhere to Wwoof in India, when do you need people? I'm free from March 2013, would you like some help then for a few weeks? Is it cold there at that time of year? Are you volunteering there yourself or have you done so in the past? How many people are you looking for? (I'm traveling with a couple of friends)
Cheers,
Sam
Hi Samantha,
Good to hear from you, no its not cold around that time, it starts getting hot in March. I have spent all my summers there since I was a child. The more helping hands the better, but there are a few traditional norms that one may need to adhere to since its a rural area. The people are very warm and welcoming and I hope it can be an enriching experience for each volunteer.
Do keep in touch!
what is the name of the town? the farm sounds amazing, very interested.
Ello Nandita,
I am currently in a ten month program helping with disasters within the U.S. I was planning on going to India/Southeast Asia with a pen pal of mine from Australia. We were thinking of going around July/Aug,and staying for a few months.
I would absolutely love to volunteer at the farm once I'm done with my program, it sounds like such a wonderful place. How could I get involved and how long do you think I would be able to stay?
Sending you best of wishes and all of my peace.
Justin Forrest Parks
hey Justin,
Write me in whenever you think of coming and we can figure the volunteer scene, we need help during sowing, harvesting, maintaining the animals, rebuilding some old structures. There's plenty to do whatever interests you and is the current work at hand.
:) peace to you!
Nandita
I would so like to go there and help, but my master is very strict... :(
When I finish I'll check if you still need volunteers :)
I hope you'll find hardworking volunteers and thet they will enjoy India as well :)

how are you? I know its a tad bit late, but did I inbox a reply to you? I thought I did but didn't hear from you!
do let me know!
hi nandita...this is naren from delhi ( & gujarat).
m an architect by profession and m working in delhi since 5 years now.
i dont know its this post is still active...the eco-cottages part caught my eyes and felt interested to know more about it.
i would really wish to volunteer on such a farm which also has some eco-building activity associated with it...thats an area of my interest as i too m hoping to develope something on the same lines in my village back-home....i am a farm person myself and i would be only too delighted to have a hands-on experience at farm like ur granny's as described by you.
if working hands are required still, i would love to take an extended and work there for 4-5 days, if thats not too short a time to accomplish any task on the farm according to u.
do reply back and let me know about the current status of the volunteering opportunity described in this post.
regards
naren

Yes ofcourse the post is alive and ticking! its really good to hear from you though we'd prefer to have a little longer stay volunteers to get a better understanding of the place. The work on the eco cottages hasn't begun yet and we'd be glad to have some architects on board to guide local building techniques. Would you be keen to come longer so you can study the place more. You know how distances are like in India and a short trip to a far of place.. ? not sure.. Still keen though.. if you can find a bit more time :)
Hi Nandita,
I'm also interested in helping, especially in building. I'm not able to come this year, but if you create a mailing list or a blog in the future, then please include me in your updates. I've done some construction work here in the States, though mostly part of a crew. Not sure what you have in mind for your eco-cottages -how complicated, etc. If you have ideas or examples of what you have in mind or like, perhaps you could post them at some point.
Best wishes,
Kieran

On some Polish forum somebody recommended this book to people who want to visit India:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Tiger
Does anybody know it?
Dear Nandita.
I know there is already long list of interested people! Isn't it fantastic that so many people a longing for helping? It makes me believe in the human race despite all the depressing news the media shouts out loud. However, it also sounds very appealing to me: to help and meet so many other people with such a world perspective. I was travelling a bit around northern India, when I was 19 but because of my pale skin and red hair, I will only be able to work outside during the winter season. Please let me know, if you think it could be relevant.
With joy from the snow covered Denmark.

yes ofcourse.. infact we're still on the look out for volunteers!
Hello everyone!
Thank you for your keen interest, our farm is still in need of volunteers and we're building on this wonderful project.
We have a Facebook page so you can see some of what we do.

We're keen to have more of you pitch in.
We will need Carpentry and masonry input, architecture backgrounds would be a great help to build local.
Thank you!
look forward to hear from you!
Nandita :)

Hi Sarjerao,
Unfortunately we don't have a stream, but have a seasonal river that flows.
Solar power would be useful as we have a lot of sun, but it will be great for you to help us with generating renewable energy since it is in such short supply in rural India.
Thank you!
Hi Nandia !
I am very interested
Tell me more please
How does it work?
It seems to be a great opportunity
