About Me

ABOUT ME

I am what I am. ;)

PHILOSOPHY

The only thing I know for certain is that I know nothing for certain. Except that any view based upon prejudice towards another group of people is not worth hearing.

I am a fairly opinionated person, but I love hearing what other people think, being shown a new perspective, and even being proven wrong. Close-mindedness is simply small-mindedness.

So, trite though it may sound, I figure life is short, so you should get out there and enjoy it, see as much as you can, meet and learn from as many people as you can, and never let fear prevent you from doing what you want to do. Because even if it doesn't go well, you usually learn more from a rough experience or from someone who disagrees with you than you would otherwise.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I surf, I've hosted, and i enjoy the heck out of both

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've had three great experiences at home, taking someone out for lunch, taking someone out on the town in NYC, and hosting someone and taking the around for a few days.

I've surfed and met CS travel buddies in New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and each experience was just what I was looking for or better!

Interests

Travel (obviously), dance, yoga, reading, swimming, trekking, boating, going out to hear live music, white water rafting, scuba-diving, hang-gliding... We'll see how many I can say I've done when I get back from my big trip!

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: Just Kids, anything by Zadie Smith, Bob Dylan's Chronicles Volume 1, Posession, The Road, A People's History of the United States, A Room with a View, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Vanishing Face of Gaia, Their Eyes Were Watching God, anything by E.L. Doctorow or Gloria Naylor, and I'll admit it... Harry Potter

Movies: I own too many to name across too many genres, so here's a small sampling... Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Spaceballs, Casino Royale, Eternal Sunshine, The Hurt Locker, Lord of the Rings, and the original Star Wars trilogy, the first 3 Indiana Jones movies, and the first 2 X-men movies (I like to pretend the later incarnations do not exist).

Music: Anything. From Queen to Jay-Z, the Raconteurs to old Outkast, Damien Rice, Radiohead, Beethoven, Johnny Cash, The Black Keys, Jack Johnson, Adele, Spoon, Nina Simone, Portishead, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, the Beatles, the Stones, Arcade Fire, Aimee Mann, Jill Scott, Nirvana, Ray LaMontagne, Green Day, Jeff Buckley, Etta James

Oh, and The Wire is the greatest television show of all time. Period. But Buffy and Arrested Development tie for a close second.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sitting atop the monolith that looms over Cefalu, Sicily to partake of the stunning view...
...or sitting terrified in a hotel room in London waiting for my sisters to return home from the Old Bailey where they were giving testimony to having witnessed a murder during, ironically, a Jack the Ripper tour. Silly me: I'd gone to check out Westminster Abbey.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I'm not sure how much I can teach because i'm something of a jack of all trades, master of none, but there are lots of things I'd love to practice so that we can both improve, like speaking Spanish, practicing yoga, dance, or Krav Maga (which I had never even heard of recently, but it's a kick-ass martial art that I'm really enjoying working on. Or if you ever want to come/ go to NYC, I can certainly show you a lot there!

Learn: I would love to learn anything you can teach me, but if you can actually teach me to cook, then that will truly be an acheivment on your part!
