About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To live, love and enjoy my life. To make friends everywhere I go and to never lose my heart and soul to the 'civilised' world!

ABOUT ME

My name is Matthew Rainford - also known as Matty Dread, Lestat, Rainy, Shitlocks, Captain Jack, Captain Sparrow, Oi You and, of course, (The Almighty) Bobbu.

I'm an artist, writer, poet, philosopher, vegan, lunatic, physicist, pansexual, spiritualist, philosopher, polyamorous, performer, tattooist, theologian and general anthropologist. For the un-initiated into the art of reeling off utterly irrelevant and meaningless jargon, that means I'm a human being who thinks, with an adoration for the world and the human race; who then expresses what he thinks about it all in any form of creativity that he can master.

PHILOSOPHY

I live to love. It is the highest aspect of being human, and I always seek it out in everyone I meetm if I can.

I'm an anarchist existentialist, I think. I believe freedom is the most important part of any society, and love of it is what should drive any real collective of human beings.

Spiritually, I find buddhism and satanism are closest to my personal philosophy, and fit quite well around my empathic abilities. If that sounds like a puzzling combination - it is! Ask me and I'll happily speak more on my muddled philosophy!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm mainly a host, but I plan on getting out there and onto other people's sofas as soon as I'm done at uni!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've couch-surfed in a rather sporadic and random way in the past, from just spending weeks with various friends back home, or travelling about the UK for periods of time and crashing at friend's houses. It's always fun, and never uneventful.
And as far as the other side of couch-surfing goes - the hosting side of it... well, my house is always open to visitors, whether they want to crash or just come over for a meal or whatnot. I often sleep on the floor anyway, so my bed can also be quite free, for as long as I have a bed.

Interests

Anything where a human being puts some of their heart into what they're doing.

Except sport... just seems pointless to me. I'm not a big competitive person.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite movies, in no particular order at all, are American Beauty, Lost In Translation, Trainspotting, Fight Club, K-PAX, Ice Age, Donnie Darko, Monty Python and the Life Of Brian, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dark Star, Little Miss Sunshine, Amelie and Closer.

---

I like lots of music, from Jack Off Jill and Nirvana, to Evanescence and Placebo; from Starsailor and Aqualung, to Jet and Brand New; from Duke Special and System Of A Down to Korn and Nightwatchman.

I have a wide taste in music.

But that's the nearest you're gonna get to a band list from me, and I don't necessarily like all the songs by those artists, 'cause writing lists annoys me (I like prose! Why doe no-one write in prose any more?), and 'cause I'm not a total obsessive.

Just an obsessive compulsive.

---

The best authors ever are Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut. I read others, but few match them for the level of cynicism and pessimism.

Animal Farm rocks though. As does Clockwork Orange.

Ah yes, and Bertrand Russell and David Hume could write any other philosopher into the grave. Probably did.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Fallen in love.

Teach, Learn, Share

Oh, deep breath.. I can:

Paint with acrylics, sculpt with clay and plastacine, draw with pencils or pens, write novels, short stories, scripts and poetry, act, compere entertainment nights, read poetry in public, design, build and maintain websites, design tattoos, do pretty much any graphic design, run linux OS, fiddle with Windows with a fair bit of competence, drink my own bodyweight, organise and publicise events.

I'm learning to ride a motorbike, heal with energy, and tattoo at the moment.

I'd like to learn to speak at least another language, and play an instrument - preferably something small and invaluable, like a panpipe or harmonica or something like that.
