Couch Information
Couch Available: Yes Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 2
Shared Sleeping Surface: Depends Shared Room: DependsSee notes below I know we can all be rushed/busy at times, however, I would very much appreciate your reading through my profile carefully and sending me a request if you truly think I'm somebody you want to connect with. I share my home with my husband and two cats (could be an issue for anyone with allergies). Oh, and Rod smokes indoors when he feels like it.
Couchsurfing to me is about a human connection and/or experience. It's not just about getting a free place to stay, that is just the bonus of meeting a host who is willing to share information and stories, and where possible show you around a little.
1. Double bed means two people as a maximum request usually and then you have to be willing to share the bed.
2. Please use the Couchsurfing request button, not a private message.
3. If you are a NO SHOW and have not given me notice that you will not be arriving, I will leave a neutral or negative reference stating you were too inconsiderate to inform me that you would not be coming.
4. Bedding, if your staying just one night I ask where possible that you use your own sleeping sheet.
5. I do ask that you are prepared to be self sufficient in the food stakes! I do love to cook and bake my own bread and will sometimes cook for my guests, it just depends, we always go to dinner in town on Thursday evenings. It's $15 for two courses and your most welcome to join us. I love it when guests offer to prepare some food that is new to us ... sharing recipes and such like.
6. Lot's of space for camping outdoors and there is a rotunda in the far end of the paddock that creates shade in summer when needed. Camping is not recommended in winter months due to cold overnight temperatures.
Whilst we appreciate that sometimes it is difficult to state an exact date for arrival, please remember that if you do ask to couchsurf with us, that means we refuse any further requests for that time frame you have requested.
So, if you can at least maintain contact with us, by phone or by email, and that will allow us to offer the couch surfing experience to others if your unable to turn up on the dates you originally asked for. 24 hours notice would be a minimum but a longer time is preferred.

Personal DescriptionWhat to say?
I live in a rural area about 3.5kms outside the town with my husband Rod. The town of St Marys has a population of about 500 people, when you include the hill and valley dwellers like myself and my husband that population goes up to around 800.
Shops close early in town, the Coach House is the only store open after 5pm in the evening and all stores close at mid day on Saturday and re-open on Monday morning, so please come prepared. There is a pub in town which serves pub food should you get stuck.
The road to our place is a dirt road it is graded regularly but it can of course be a bit rougher than bitumen (hire cars are not insured to drive on dirt roads). We have a septic tank, so please be aware of what you throw into the toilet. We also have no town water, we pump all of our water from the creek and then filter it. We have a rain water tank that supplements the creek water. No garbage collection and no mail delivery, just to give you an idea of our setting.
Husband Rod is my long partner (25 + years). We have travelled extensively during our relationship, our longest trip being a stretch of two years through south east Asia and Australia. I love the idea of meeting new people through the couch surfing project.
Currently we are renovating and we have no couch per se, but we do have a spare double bed in a private room!
We have two cats both taken in from being abandoned, they are now pretty tolerant of people, but of course no good if you are allergic to cats.
One of us is a smoker and Rod does smoke indoors at times. Alcohol does not really feature in our lives.
We are in the hinterland, for us this is a "tree change" after leaving Sydney in July 2007. We are about 10 mins in the car from a stunning coastline.
Tasmania for me is much about natural beauty of the landscape and things like trees and good food! Sadly there is very limited public transport to be had locally so, a willingness to take on some hitch hiking (locals do it all the time and we often pick up hitch hikers) or your own transport is needed.
We are early to bed types (Say 10-10.30) and rise early of a morning (5.30-7). We usually have some wildlife around our place.
How I Participate in CSI have a double room that is spare for guests, one double bed. Lot's of camping areas outside if that was required. CouchSurfing ExperienceI have hosted guests from these countries to date:

From Johanna Voss and James Dufour Newtonville, United States Dec 17, 2009 Positive After so many couchsurfing experiences, it would seem like it might get a bit hard to reference people with originality, but with Janet and Rod it was easy. They're who we want to be when we grow up (not that they're grown up, or that we're not, anyway, they're wicked cool).
From Barbara Appleby Victoria, Canada Dec 1, 2009 Positive While CSing in Tasmania 11/09 I contacted Janet with a request to surf with her and we made contact over the phone a few times. A few days prior to our meeting she had to leave Tasmania on an urgent family matter but was willing to let me stay at her home even though they would not be home. I did not end up staying at her home but I have continued to stay in touch as I find Janet to be a very interesting person and I will definitely look her up again on my next visit to Tasmania!
From Mauricio Copló Santiago, Chile Aug 14, 2009 Positive Janet and Rod are exceptional people and we enjoyed being with them. Janet is a radiant person and always looks happy. Rod is a very good man and has a very funny English humor. The house is a very nice place in the world. We feel your home like our home.
From Simon Mangold Furtwangen, Germany Jun 21, 2009 Positive Had a lovely time with Janet at St. Marys. She's an inspiring friendly person, that I enjoyed very much to make acquaintance with.Take care Janet.
From NOMAD® Villeurbanne, France Apr 17, 2009 Positive Janet answer to me a very nice and warm welcome email to my protocolar one about my next stay in Australia. I wish to keep in touch and visit her during my next extended stay.
From Peter Sebb Dresden, Germany Apr 6, 2009 Positive We want to thank you very much for the opportunity to stay for one night in your wonderfull house in the middle of the forests near St. Marys. We're sad, but we could'nt stay for your offered second ;-( After we left you, we climbed succesfull the St. Patrics Head!
We want to thank you for the "fried potato pizza" ;-)) and the tassie-language lesson - Hooroo! - See you in Dresden! Best greetings to the wallabies ( and the garden-possum ;-)))

From Julien Matuszak L'Hay-les-Roses, France Apr 1, 2009 Positive We met thanks to a lad's fixed phone close to her place in Tasmania in a cultural cafe. It'd have been a pleasure to stay longer and have a dinner there but the call of the wild camping in the bay of Fires - which turned out to be a great moment - was irresistible.
Janet has a great experience of life and much to tell about that in general. We got into a meandering conversation that fatally stopped due to a shortness of time but I'm quite sure we'll continue it one day again in Tasmania!
From Marina Mager Rottweil, Germany Mar 2, 2009 Positive Janet and Rod are a lovely couple. We (me and a travelmate) had a good conversation with them and discovered one of the most awesome places on earth;)
Thanks for everything, we really enjoyed our stay:)
Hopefully we meet again sometime!
From FABIO84 Florence, Italy Feb 25, 2009 Positive I only slept one night in theyr lovely house, i would like to spend more days for lern from them the love for the nature, how live out of the busy life, and how give a warm hospitality how i recived.
thanks Janet & Rod
From Manuela Krug Mainz, Germany Feb 25, 2009 Positive Janet and her husband Rod are absolutely nice, caring and helpful people who seemed to be really interested in getting to know the people that stay with them better.
we had a great evening including good conversations, their favourite tv show and really nice food.
Unfortunately we had only one night at their beautiful BRIGHT BLUE house which I enjoyed a lot. Thanks for all that!
From TWONOMADS Martinez, United States Feb 19, 2009 Positive It was very sweet of Jan and Rod to drive down from St. Mary's to find us after we struggled with phone and internet connections. We had a relaxing 2 nights, recharging our batteries (and our thigh muscles!), chatting up a storm about all kinds of topics, and absorbing the peaceful energy of their home, quietly nestled in the trees with great views and entertaining wildlife. Jan's a great cook and made great coffee, too. Thanks so much for letting us stay with you.
From HEATHER F Kingston, Canada Feb 17, 2009 Positive I spent a relaxing evening with janet and rod at their beautiful place outside st. mary's. janet made myself and two other couch surfers delicious indian food, and we all had lots to talk about. she also hooked me up with a local yoga class. very accommodating and lovely people - thanks, janet!
From Javi Jiménez Barcelona, Spain Feb 14, 2009 Positive I have already apologized and feel sorry about the situation. I did not see the contact info when Janet replied my first email because it appeared at the end of it, after my email, and I thought there was nothing else on it. It was my fault, sorry about it.
From GEMMA GARCIA Manresa, Spain Feb 3, 2009 Positive We spent one night in Janet and Rod's place. Such a beautiful place. We were talking and talking all the afternoon and evening and enjoying the landscape and the wallabies. We played with their cats called Ted and Bella.
From Ryn & Yan Tucson, United States Jan 20, 2009 Positive Rod and Janet are the epitome of "a good host." They fed us, watered us, graciously offered us a very cushy bed in a well-lit room (the sun and stars through big windows), showed us around the lovely little town of St. Mary's, introduced us to the locals (including one particularly cute puppy), and regaled us with good stories and insightful conversation. Not once did we turn on anything electronic that first night, opting instead to enjoy each other's company. I dare say Yan and I learned more about Tasmania and Australia in only a few hours of chit-chat than we ever learned in either the Chinese or American public school systems.
Overall, it was a very comfortable and inspiring visit and an excellent first couch-surfing experience for me and Yan. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.
We had a truly wonderful time with the Drummonds, and we hope that this is the beginning of a long and fruitful friendship. Highly, highly recommended for any traveler to Tasmania!
From Judith Maier Herrenberg, Germany Jan 14, 2009 Positive Janet is a very nice, open and friendly person. We had good conversations, she and her husband tell us where to go and what to do. They live at a very nice spot, with wonderful nature all around.
From Susanna Meyer Berlin, Germany Jan 14, 2009 Positive Janet hosted us for one night and shared her experiences with us, which was very interesting (and i loved to hear more, but in the end i was too tired!)! She and her husband told us lots about what we can do and whats good to see. Thanks for that and for the opportunity to stay at your lovely place!
From Wen-Qian Yong Sydney, Australia Jan 7, 2009 Positive Really good experience for a me and my friends! I have always wondered what it was like to travel around and never settle down. I got a pretty rough idea of what it is like as Janet and Rod have been travelling around for some time, and have been to so so many places!
Enjoyed my stay there. Sitting with the couples in front of the beautiful fireplace and the wallaby "conference" outside, it reminded me of what it feels like to be home.
From Zi Xiang Chan Puchong, Malaysia Dec 21, 2008 Positive Janet and Rod are both amazing and easygoing people! They taught us how to admire and appreciate living amongst nature (it doesn't get any better than having 4 wallabies basking in the spot light outside the window in the cold night!)
Janet helped us plan our route up the east coast and I think we did pretty well to include whatever we could (we managed to see the sunrise at the bay of fires! Completely magical) and it would not have been possible without the detailed and in depth information that Janet drew for us.
The meal was far from satisfactory but I hope we will have the chance to cook you a real and nice Malaysian meal some time in future ;)
From Luke Jukes Vernon, Canada Oct 17, 2008 Positive Found out about Janet from a page I opened when I entered Tasmania, quickly deciding I'd like to meet up once I hit the east coast, even if it was for only 1 day. She was well worth visit, the area of her home is fantastic, peaceful and overall a beautiful area to be in, as well as Janet and Robby being great hosts. More than welcome to my house whenever they are in my area, great to meet you both.
From Ewan Adelaide, Australia Oct 15, 2008 Positive Janet is awesome!! She assisted me with my plan to walk the Overland Track and she did it excellently. She even offered me a place to stay. Thanks!
From Jing-Ling Weng Taipei, Taiwan Sep 24, 2008 Positive Janet loves peace and a natural life. To stay with her is really pleasant. And I do like her and his husband. And Janet treat us with a big feast, that's really nice for a hungry traveller...:P
From Chia-Da Hsu Taipei, Taiwan Sep 16, 2008 Positive Janet is very nice for us. The two days that we stayed in her place made us to feel like "home away from home". We had a great time with Janet and her husband, they treated us very generous and kind. They had travelled many countries before, and it's very pleasent to share and discuss about our travelling experience and interesting things for each other. Their house is so fantastic. In daytime, it's really funny to observe the native hens chasing each other around her backyard. And in nighttime, just through their big windows, we can see 2-3 pademelons jumping everywhere. It's a paradise for wild animals. Therefore, we did not have to go outside to be frozen for watching animals. That's really nice for people interesting animals but lazy to search.:P We bet if we get any chance back to St. Mary, we would like to visit them again.
From **Jo** Hobart, Australia Sep 12, 2008 Positive Janet is one of those people I felt immediate warmth from even though I have only ever chatted with her on-line. We met through Scrabble on Facebook last year but also chat on line on a frequent basis. She has so much knowledge and so much to offer. I believe to stay with Janet and her partner would be a truly enriching experience.
From Stephanie Muise Toronto, Canada May 25, 2008 Positive janet and i have had great discussion about everything! while playing online scrabble together.. if i ever get the funds together i would love to make her country my first overseas vacation! can i couchsurf with you and rod?? pretty please? lol
janet and i have skyped together a few times, so i feel like i know her and have met her.. dammit.. i'm going to say i have met her.. what's the difference between skype and in the literal flesh?? we have talked about almost everything on skype!! |
