Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
No couch currently available for surfing. I am on the road...
I sometimes change my location to the place I'm staying if I'll be there more than a couple of days. Otherwise it probably says Edinburgh because that's where I was born and lived until 2005, since then I've been on the road.
My US cell is +1 585 201 1120.
If my last login location says London or UK, then it's most likely a lie. I sometimes use a proxy when I'm on open wifi networks, so it looks like I'm in London, but I'm not really. :-)
My most up to date contact info is usually found here.
Inspired by Stephanie's profile, for the record, I'm queer postive.

Personal DescriptionWhy is there a big red cross on my picture? I have consciously chosen not to become "verified" on CouchSurfing. I believe verification is a misuse of cash and creates a false sense of security. I prefer to host and be hosted by unverified members. Why? I invite you to explore the support The OpenCouchSurfing Campaign for more information. I also invite you to explore where verification money goes and how it is spent. So-called "verification" donations totalled almost $780'000 in 2008.
I'm currently living nomadically. I was working online, about 20 hours a week, then about 12 hours a week, but it was too much. In June 2009 I retired from the work force. I'm not set for life, but I have enough cash to keep me going for a while. I'll do some writing, some other stuff, and money will work itself out.
I take decisions lightly and usually quickly. I'm relaxed about going places and then figuring out where to go and what to do from there. My plan is to have no plan.
In recent years I've become more spiritually focused. I gave up alcohol in Jan 2008 and tobacco in Jan 2009. I've meditated most days since Jan 2008. The focus of my meditation is to generate peace, calm and contentment.
I try to evaluate choices in my life according to these values. I try to make choices that I believe will create more peace, calm and contentment.
A note about photos. My appearance varies from the before haircut photo to the after hair cut photo. Typically it's somewhere in the middle because I'm a little lackadaisical when it comes to cutting my hair. :-)
There's more information about me on my blog at www.callum-macdonald.com How I Participate in CSI hosted a bunch of people in Bangkok and I was in Nelson, New Zealand at the CS Collective.
I had joined the Tech Team, but due to issues with the NDA I wasn't really able to do very much. Then because I supported the OpenCouchSurfing campaign I was fired as a volunteer! :) CouchSurfing ExperienceI've hosted a bunch of people and am about to embark on a spell of surfing! InterestsI really enjoy people. I enjoy meeting people, spending time with people, conversing with people, and so on. For a long time I thought everyone shared this interest, but I realise that may not be the case.
I'm fascinated by organisations, how they operate, the creativity of business, how people come together and collaborate. I'm interested in how the human mind works and in better understanding how the world around us works.
The things I try to prioritise in my life are:
Sleep
Meditation
Diet PhilosophyMy plan is to have no plan.
I try to live according to a Buddhism inspired philosophy. I try to do unto others as I would like them do unto me. I try to be ethical in all my dealings personal and professional.
I'm a strong believer in daily practice. I believe daily practice is the foundation of an undertaking. Music, Movies, BooksI read mainly non fiction books. Most of my reading is around topics like spirituality, Buddhism, psychology, business, marketing, the human mind.
I seem to watch less and less television and movies as time goes on.
I listen to all sorts of music. I'm not particularly focused on music so I download music as I happen upon it. Types of People I enjoyI connect most easily with people who are open. I try to be open to experiences, people, different viewpoints. Beyond openness, I enjoy the company of mostly anyone. Teach, Learn, ShareI can teach traditional Scottish country dancing, known in Scotland as ceilidh dancing (pronounced kaylee). The simplest dance is called the Gay Gordons and is really very easy to learn... :)
I work with WordPress and WordPressMU (blogging software) and I'm familiar with PHP, HTML, CSS and a little Javascript. I'm happy to share these skills.
I'm very much interested in diet and health. I have a great deal to learn on these topics. I think this will be my focus for a while. One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneI have met wonderful people.
I visited Bulungula, one of the most inspiring locations I have seen anywhere in the world. The place, the people and the lodge itself are amazing.
I try to be open to the amazingness of this very moment, the now. Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org ProjectI think CouchSurfing has some major challenges, moving from a small core organisation into a larger, more structured body of people. I'm curious to see how the organisation, specifically the founders, will rise to this challenge. Interesting times to come. From Stephanie Duy Portland, United States Sep 16 Positive Even though Callum was ill when he crashed at my couch, he was the best guest a novice host could ask for. He paid for dinner his first night here, provided entertaining conversation when he wasn't hacking up a lung, solved all my Rubik's cubes within three hours of getting here, and did all the dishes (which means he can come back anytime, please)! He's a very good guy with a drive you don't often see. Go people-watching with him sometime: you won't regret it.
From Roberta Cervantes Garcia Mexico City, Mexico Sep 14 Positive Ohhh look what I found! jajajajaja I met Callum and his friend Jose for dinner with other CSers in Mexico City. Callum was a nice quiet guy for the first 30 minutes, afterwards he teased and annoyed me to death ¬¬ even took a picture of me (I HATE that!) but somehow, he's OK and I liked him, and when I can't afford an expensive cab, he doesn't think I'm cheap :)
From Esther Lorenz Blandford, Canada Sep 12 Positive Callum is a maverick, marching to a different drummer, a free thinker, open to discuss any topic while offering a new perspective on things ... as he motorbikes his way across Canada from Calif. to Halifax & then on to Argentina.

I wish him fair winds blowing behind him all the way through life.
From J0SY Quebec, Canada Sep 1 Positive I hosted Callum at the last minute when he decide to attend to our monthly gathering :) He is a very quiet guest and he is interested by what his host are doing he even get up at 5h30 to follow us to a lumberjack contest even if he could have stay in the bed :) Cheers!!!

Great guy, great attitude, whip smart. Fearless, ambitious, could survive on dew and gun powder.

From Al and Anna Regina, Canada Jul 18 Positive Callum was on a motorbike trip, and posted on our local board that he needed a break from the bad weather. He was an excellent guest, and a cool CouchSurfer. Was hoping to meet up some more at Ness Music Festival, but I'm afraid its all sold out... Best of luck in your travels Callum!
From Gina Trapp Saskatoon, Canada Jul 16 Positive I really enjoyed hosting Callum. We talked about a huge variety of things, and though we didn't agree on everything - who ever does?- it was stimulating, thought provoking and at all moments enjoyable. There are so many things we didn't cover so its a shame his visit was so short. Also a shame that I have summer classes! Callum was kind enough to buy me some groceries and left me with a pair of rubber gloves- his dishwasher trademark. Welcome back anytime. Enjoy the road!
From Oceah Clark-Kasperyzk Vancouver, Canada Jun 30 Positive We partied several times in Vancouver BC, and I already trust him to a high degree. He looks you in the eye when you're talking, and his integrity is clear. My highest recommendations. Hope to see you at Burning Man bro!

From Mary Liz Critchlow Portland, United States Apr 20 Positive Callum is a great person to spend time with. He is friendly, has interesting perspectives to share, is open to all kinds of discussions, and is respectful of others. I eagerly await reading his soon to be written manifesto to gain further insight . As the first person to ever surf my couch, Callum has left me feeling incredibly enthusiastic about the whole CouchSurfing community.

But that's the way to fight your devils, right? We have spent 3 days on the campervan trip. And I just know that Callum will survive in the wildest jungle left only with a stick. From Jim San Francisco, United States Dec 8, 2007 At the Collective in New Zealand Callum upset our neighbors by noisily and drunkenly urinating in their yard on the way home from a party at 4am. The next day they formed a committee and came over to voice how upset they were. I would be uncomfortable having him on my couch as I'd rather not take the chance of him pissing in the yards of my neighbors.
From CRASH ANOVA San Francisco, United States Nov 14, 2007 Positive Callum was really cool. He was so accomodating, even when I got to his apartment butt early in the morning after a long flight from Oz. He took me around Bangkok, introduced me to his friends and helped me get from place to place.
We had some good nights out too!
There were some blurry eyes on more than one occasion getting back from an evening of fun.

From Jade Johnston Leuven, Belgium Jul 25, 2007 Positive I met him at the ceilidh at Edinburgh Rocks and saw him at most of the other events as well.
