I. Coachella Valley Group
Feel free to ask me questions regarding the Coachella Valley group, or anything else, I suppose! IMPORTANT NOTE: as of this writing it is acceptable to post a couch-request on the Coachella Valley board: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group.html?gid=5934
II. Communication
If you hope to surf with me, please over-communicate, i.e. leave your phone number, possibly in every email, etc. Couchsurfing email works fine for me, but a phone number can be essential for when the system is down or when trying to meet up and ironing details...
Even though I know it's sort of redundant, I do suggestion people take a read at:
* HOW TO BE A GOOD HOST - http://www.couchsurfing.com/wiki/How_to_be_a_good_host
and
* HOW TO BE A GOOD GUEST - http://www.couchsurfing.com/wiki/How_to_be_a_good_guest
III. My house:
I'm pretty much always ready for people, and I do enjoy hosting. You'll find good couch hunting grounds, including a rather comfy plush brown number that awaits the orthodox surfer. People fall asleep there, but for the more modern iconoclasts, and well acquainted parties of small number, please enjoy the bedroom.
IV. Emphatic requests:
Please no glass by the pool, please LIGHTLY clean your quarters up when you leave (I have a vacuum, a washing maching/dryer, and stuff for the bathroom - I'm not anal but it really is a nice thing to do, and I will help I promise!) and please just try to help me keep putting the dishes into the dishwasher (and then away?). Don't be afraid, nothing is precious or has a secret spot.
V. Food:
Sometimes I buy food in advance of a surfer, but I will communicate that - it may be better for you to see what I have on hand before buying food - it's just easier and less wasteful to cooperate! (Donations accepted and food for the fridge (left-overs, bulk items, etc) is fantastic!) As I said, I admit to being a 'feeder'!
Anything extra, like cooking for me, etc, is just gravy, but happily accepted. Likely we will fight for the pans :) Also I make beer and wine so please please partake!
Re: Short term guests: I will offer you a meal or two and have no expectations about it being returned. None-the-less, please understand that I am a grad student, not a lottery winner.
VI. Area-Related Questions? Free/Discounted Stuff?
Please write me with any questions about the area: I will be happy to try to answer them! I have some memberships to this or that and can help get discounts of course! I'd love to assuage any fears/suggest where in the city(s) you might like to stay, fun things to do outside... there is lots and lots! Also I have traveled a lot (some might say travailed) and am happy to offer some thoughtful tips.
VII. All About YOU
Non-monetary reasonable exchange of friendship and fun - or simply helping someone do something cool with their life (education, conferences, bicycle touring, entering beauty-queen contests, etc) - that's what this is about for me.
I DO love people with interests, a track record, and sanity. If you have no references, I might still host you, but I really encourage you to go to a local group meet-up and make friends, yes, in your home city. This is especially helpful in any capital or large city. Do a group search at: http://www.couchsurfing.com/groups.html?search=1 and simply enter in a few key-words -> like the name of your home city.
VIII A note about the area/Unsolicited Reflections:
Ahh the desert... It's not dessert, but it is sweet!
You need to have wheels - there have only been maybe two non-car people that have come to stay, so yes there are a few busses, but it's got to be very specific where you want to go. For cheap rentals, try the airport rentals, like budget, for 15-30 dollar daily rates! At times I am more than happy to help shuttle for group meet-ups, but increasingly I can't run people around, I'm way too busy.
My Unsolicited Reflection:
I have consistently followed through for my surfers, and never been a no-show... and if it were to happen, I would absolutely work on your behalf...!
However, for your own safety and sense of 'agency', as an experienced surfer, I encourage the forming of back-up plans, and staying flexible. While I am reliable, suppose an emergency came up? (Head up to Joshua Tree National Park, to camp for a few days? There are also inexpensive rooms at the near-by casinos.)

Personal DescriptionI love personalized couch-requests.
If you are looking for a couch, the 'My Couch' section is the most important part of this page, IMO. On the left, the upper half of the page.
__________________________________________
I love to draw and give away portraits. Just ask.
I get on 'health kicks'.
I would say I'm both lost and found, a finder and hopefully a keeper (but really not a loser or a weeper). I follow my heart.... even when I'm glued to my Garmin, oddly walking in cross patterns, looking for hidden treasure...!
I've traveled tons... I first struck out alone as a teen, sans family to Costa Rica. What freedom it was at that age to walk across San Jose all alone, choked up with smog or conversely finding myself in open fields filled with mimosa plants - passing my hands along them is a crystalline memory for me.
How I Participate in CSWe have a great local group and a few of us get together once in a while. This year one member rented a big site at Lake Cahuilla, for Coachella Fest - that was fun!
CouchSurfing ExperienceAt first in Asia (where I was for 3 years) I noticed there were so many cool folks who congregated because of this CS - not to share rooms, but to go and do things, for those of us who lived over there long-term.
In Coachella Valley I have found CSers to be a really fun bunch of quality people.
I host a lot, and I have enjoyed "mashing up" my ocean adventures (sailing, wave-surfing) with couchsurfing. However I host much more than I travel.
InterestsCreativity, gifting, exploring dreaming, (wave) surfing, travel, exploring cultures, speaking Spanish... lately tennis and brewing beer and wine.
I'm interested in these guys:

I am a teacher and tutor, and sometimes editor, so obviously those are interests. For fun I have been willing to edit technical papers on the neuroscience of dyslexia - go figure!
I do so love my GPS - I do quite a bite of geocaching - if you don't know of this game just check geocaching.com. I just love my litto Garmin... Somehow mapping and drawing seem to go together.
Also, I love to draw couchsurfers!

Here's my friend Adam:
PhilosophyTake some basic instructions on bee-keeping:

The "rules": Give back. Laugh, play, work, enjoy a little silence.
And philosophy I really have in my gut: Teach to learn, and you learn to teach. Learning is really the motivation. Music, Movies, BooksMy favorite book of travel writings has to be "Songlines" by Bruce Chatwin. WOW what a great book about travel and trade - very relevant to my experiences - and insightful about the human condition. If you have seen this new movie 'Australia', they touch on the topic, but there is much more to be discovered...
I especially love autobiography and non-fiction - I'm a nerd! And gory/funny/weird movies. Me, you, and everyone we know... (the movie) and Mars Attacks! Jeeze I love Mars Attacks!
I am a huge Brian Wilson (of Beach Boys fame) fanatic.
I've read tons of Rumi but I prefer Emily Dickinson, when I'm really serious about it. I lived for years in her home town (Amherst, MA) and would pass by her house. Everywhere in the woods I liked to imagine her peeking out, spying!
I should say that I really hated the book 'The Secret' - just found it to be drivel, really. Sorry to you fans, but it's true, lol.... I'm mean I try to be sensitive and all that but really...
Types of People I enjoyI really love all kinds of people. I really do, however, need some quiet from time to time, a rest, an empty space. The desert is good for me.
I like to be social and also make BBQs, when I'm not working working away on editing papers or case-studies. I enjoy waterparks, dancing, getting up with the sunrise, taking walks... Most people know I'm a pretty sociable guy.
I'm best in the morning so.... morning people and I understand each other.... but I'm not against a midnight swaree, particularly if there is music involved.
Oh and I really enjoyed staying with this family, who taught me how to prepare escargot... Well let me tell you we weren't very sanctimonious about it! See:
Teach, Learn, Share Teaching and learning is a huge part of my life..
Otherwise I like to give away heaps of portraits and play in the surf... or sail. I'm always interested in learning neat things, developing my nerdy side.
I make great home-made bagels! Ummmmm bagels....
Nobody ever really wants to really learn to home-brew, but everyone seems to enjoy the results ;)
This isn't my video, but I can show you how to make a backpacker's ultra-light stove out of only aluminum cans: http://www.youtube.com/v/U22LI1-ZNYs&hl=en&fs=1
One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneLots - I've had an exciting life... Niagra Falls, 9/11 in New York (first hand), surf constantly in my dreams. I was living in SE Asia for several years, which was amazing...
Teaching in a jail, yoga with a silent monk of 83 years.
Things around here to suggest: Slab city and Salvation Mountain are close by, (look it up!) and crazy Joshua Tree not too far - I might lucky enough to direct you to those places. Ok maybe it's not AMAZiNg! but Knot's Soak City nearby is really pretty fun.

MUCHAS GRACIAS MONI Y JAMES POR ESOS MAGINIFICOS DÍAS JUNTO A USTEDES!!!
From Ben Miles Sonoma, United States Jul 6 Positive James, Moni and Stephan came to Sonoma to brighten up my life. It was such a pleasure to share some fantastic meals with them and hear there traveling stories. I got to meet Lisa (another local couchsurfer) and go on a hike with my new friends as well as share my little corner of the world with some excellent, humorous compadres. I will find a way to keep in touch and come visit them in Switzerland/SOCAL one of these days. If you have the chance to meet these folks do not miss out!
From Lisa Schuyler Eugene, United States Jul 6 Positive James was wonderful. Him and his two swiss partners in crime forced me to get out of my house and actually experience my home town by showing them around. They were very generous. James did quick sketches of me and several of my friends. I wish they were at every farmers market!
From Christina and Chuck Palenchar Glen Ellen, United States Jun 28 Positive With surfboard atop, James and his girlfriend Moni and her workmate Stephan, both from Switzerland, pulled up to our gate. True to his title of nomadic ambassador, James also brought with him the spirit of instant friendship. The threesome immediately put us at ease and it is obvious that couch-surfing is as natural to them as breathing. Spent an enjoyable evening sharing around the dinner table (sorry about those yellow jackets!). We enjoyed their wine and, later, the fresh orange juice. Thankyou for the beautiful card - the photo of the pristine lake in the Alps inspire us to do more than dream of a future visit.
From Benjamin Toscher Fuengirola, Spain Jun 18 Positive An incredible artist, a friendly person, and an overall fantastic addition to the CS community... glad to have met James, and look forward to collaborating on fun times in the future!
From Ian and Lizzie Harlen Soquel, United States Jun 6 Positive James is our first formal "surfer," and in fact, he is anything but formal! He is very informal, easy-going, and friendly-- just the sort of guy you'd want to find on your couch in the morning!
Most mornings though, he is up off the couch and brewing fine coffee before we arise.
From Cindy and Andy Blair Denver, United States May 10 Positive James,
You completely saved our lives. I can't begin to express how awesome you and your house are. Dinner, breakfast and basically everything was so perfect.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
From SEENAMERICA Palm Springs, United States May 1 Positive James is one of the smartest, most open and most generous people I have ever met. It would be easy to be intimidated by someone who is THAT smart and THAT artistic and THAT cool if it weren't for the fact he is THAT nice. An amazing guy- he made me feel welcome and at home.
From Haeja England Albuquerque, United States Apr 26 Positive James is an overall awesome guy! Great host! He welcomed us to his house after the Coachella festival and made everybody feel right at home. He made the most amazing french toast and coffee, and was so welcoming and accomodating I'll never forget it! He's a great guy to talk with, willing to share his knowledge and experiences, has many interests and is just great to be around. Great guy and great experience!

From Mary Bolling Melbourne, Australia Apr 21 Positive James was amazing - sight unseen, he offered to lend me and my Aussie girlfriend his tent, let us crash at his place, and even gave us breakfast. He is the epitome of hospitality, and then some - thanks for being so lovely and interesting, think we probably would have died in the desert without you James!
From Paulo Bravo Cancun, Mexico Apr 19 Positive James hosted me a day before the Coachella festival, the next day he made us french toast and gave us some of his home brewed beer and wine. Great host. Dude, like I said before when ever you wanna hit the beach, let me know and I host you in Mexico. Paulo. ciao.
From JULIE IN ATOWN Atascadero, United States Apr 6 Positive James is a well traveled, intelligent, kind, thoughtful and fun person and I thoroughly enjoyed hosting him and Monika at my home. Both are great conversationalists and very intriguing people. I had a great time hiking with Monika and eating meals and seeing local sites with them both. They are always welcome to my home and I hope I can come surf their couches some day. 'Mille grazie' for the wonderful Swiss chocolates, wine and Thai dinner :) I had a blast and hope you did as well! Many safe journeys to you both.
From Yosemitebear Yosemite Village, United States Apr 5 Positive James came with a ton of fantastic food and his wonderful girlfriend. This was my one of those times hosting somebody who was going to become my friend as he's a California guy. We connected right away and had a great time. James is very generous and a great guest. Monica is very interesting and a pleasure to talk to. I had a great time touring Yosemite with them and sitting around the campfire. James is planning on coming back soon and says he's bringing more of his friends with him. He knows he's welcome. James messed up his car on my road so everybody please learn from him, my driveway is nothing to mess with. Walk up it the first time. I can't wait to see you again buddy. Ah Ho. Bear.
From Aric Gaither Mount Vernon, United States Mar 24 Positive I only hung out with James for a few hours..he invited me over for a bbq, and it was sweet. A nice guy for sure, if I come back to the desert, we'll do some hiking!
From BLUEMARBLE Santa Monica, United States Mar 23 Positive James is definitely and easy person to like. I felt comfortable with him from the first second we met... in fact, it was as if we had known each other for years. He's very respectful, I was impressed with the little things he did... he asked me if he could bring sushi in the house (he knows I'm a vegetarian). He's personable and interesting, clean and quiet, fun and well traveled... you can stay with me anytime my brother!

We got to play tennis, rode our bike around the resort and drank homemade beer in the jacuzzi. It was def. a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. I recommend people to surf with James.
From Silkkat813 Weehawken, United States Jan 25 Positive James was a great host! We've talked in CS chat a few times and finally our schedules matched so I could visit him. I was excited to spend a day in Joshua Tree park. Then he took me out hiking in Palm Springs the next day with a local group. It was a fun experience! We had lunch with the group and fun chatting with everyone. James even introduced me to an, um, interesting horror movie that makes me want to rent the sequels! I must see the Bride of Re-animator! ;-)
Staying at James' place is one of the most relaxing places you will find. My own room. My own bathroom. And dinner waiting for me when I returned from the park. I hope to visit James again when I return to Cali and he is always welcomed to surf with me.

From Allen Rindfuss Washington, United States Jun 24, 2008 Positive ...Hard to imagine someone who wouldn't like James, who is disarmingly easy-going, good-natured, and well-versed in entertaining trivia, including couchsurfers with presidential ambitions and things bonobos (ahem) do. I have no doubt that he'd make a good host, a good friend, or a good teammate at any quiz night.
From Guillaume Roy Tainan City, Taiwan Jun 24, 2008 Positive James is very sociable, well-educated and down to earth, although sometimes *literally* up in the air and even floating with his GPS. :-P Anyone interested in GPS can definitely learn a lot from him. I am glad that besides the busy schedules we had with Coachella we had a good time with you as well…hanging out by the pool, eating your ice cream, watching you draw and being scared for life on the tram overlooking the dessert ;) Hope to see you soon again…
From Victoria Murillo Palm Desert, United States Apr 17, 2008 Positive James is just about the most welcoming person I know. He just assumes everyone is a friend that he hasn't met yet and operates from that center. James is the kind of person who views the world as a bounty of enriching and beautiful experiences in which to partake and share. I am happy to have met him.
From Mike and Brea Olmstead-Sorrells Arcata, United States Apr 15, 2008 Positive James is the sort of guest that makes one feel as though she is on holiday herself (even as I left for work at 6:30 each morning) and that is the sort of guest worth having. We had a great time! Happy trails friend.
From Isaac Warren Montellano-Messick Pratt, United States Apr 13, 2008 Positive We have known James for a while now and have nothing but good to say about him. We enjoy his endless tales about his travels and conquest. James is a true friend and we have to thank him so much for telling us about couchsurfing. He is such a positive dose of reality.
From Kelcey Wilson San Jose, United States Mar 2, 2008 Positive I am on about day 4 at James's as I write. Had planned to stay a day or so, but James makes it almost too easy to stay. It has been heaven staying at the country club - 3 times in the hot tub so far today. Perfect place to relax and get some writing done. James is also always game to organize something to do. We took a tour of a wind park yesterday, and will take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram tomorrow. Couldn't ask for a better or more comfortable CouchSurfing host.
From Jenna Wiley San Francisco, United States Feb 19, 2008 Positive James has so much hidden knowledge and it's quite enjoyable to pick his brain for awhile about the most eclectic topics of interest. He's also super generous and has a great perspective on life. I'm glad we've had the chance to play tennis before the summer heat picks up.
From Miguel Montano Montreal, Canada Feb 6, 2008 Positive James is a very friendly host, with a positive attitude about CouchSurfing, he's very involved locally and he's been my motivation to finally get involved as well.
From Max H Allston, United States Jan 20, 2008 Positive James is a generous and highly interactive host. He may even be a better host than ME -- but only because he's willing to cook meat. I'm nearly sure he would be a joy to have as a guest, too.
