ABOUT ME

UPDATE:
Life is full of surprises! Phil and I will be in Hawaii for a while. The villa has been leased to someone else for an indefinite period of time. They will not be hosting Couchsurfers. So sorry, no couch available and no possibility to meet until next January.

On December 30, 2008, I arrived in Bali with my husband Phil and a few suitcases. We had sold or given away everything we owned and had absolutely no idea what to expect. I had done a similar thing back when I was 16, moving from Indonesia to The Netherlands as a refugee, then again at 20 immigrating to the USA. Two more big moves followed: from Oklahoma to Texas in 1978 and from Texas to Hawaii in 1989. But this move to Bali has been different. For one, we're way past the spring chicken stage. And now we like our comforts. No, we need our comforts. But it turns out that Bali... Volcanic Navel of the World... Island of the Gods, Frogs and Insects... the place where the veil is the thinnest and motorcycles go both ways on a one-way street... where we're viewed as a walking ATM machine... Bali turns out to be the most glorious possible adventure for two silly old coots. That is: Phil is the coot, I'm the co-coot. Or maybe it's reversed. Whatever... you're never too old to have a happy childhood. I'm gonna play outside now.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

The pleasure of hosting.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

While living in Hawaii, I've had great fun hosting and meeting the most wonderful CS friends. Now that we're living in Bali, I've hosted, and made a LOT more friends in a far shorter period of time. Amazing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My tale of criminality: In the fall of 1981 I hitch-hiked through Mexico and then hitched a boat ride with an Australian captain and his French girlfriend from the Yucatan to Belize in the dark of night with no lights and no moon, learning only after take-off that they were smugglers. Of course, everyone else racing at top speed across the Gulf of Honduras in pitch black darkness and no lights, was smuggling one thing or another. The traffic was heavy and boats were roaring by so fast, coming and going, that it seems miraculous to me that nobody crashed headlong into another, at least that I know of.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to whistle with your fingers and if you buy the Tim Tams, I can also teach you the "Nick Laporte Way" to eat them.

Yay, Kendall Lowe taught me how to shuffle cards really fast and look like a professional card player. Next I need to invest in one of those green shade kinda head things. You know what I mean?

Can someone teach my staff First Aid things like the Heimlich technique, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or how to recognize a stroke? Ah, Carol Shaffer was kind enough to tackle this. What a great teacher she is! Thank you, Carol!!!

Anyone teach me how to cut hair?
