About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Explore new territories; seek out new people and debauchery; to boldly go where I haven't gone before.

ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Gatlin.

Since there aren't fields for this in the profile:

- Instagram: https://instagram.com/gatlincj
- Jabber: gatlin@niltag.net

I'm a part-time psychonaut in Austin. I helped start a non-profit cooperative house. Some nights I go exploring the parks and the vacant streets on foot. Once in a blue moon I buy a tank of vodka and just let loose wherever I happen to be. I do yoga when I want to feel better. It's important to remain flexible.

For money, I write software at home. I'm happy because it gives me ample free time to spend on friends and personal projects. And terrible movies.

Long term, it'd be nice to own a simple, small business and do something that makes people happy.

I've recently been able to travel more and now I'm insatiable.

PHILOSOPHY

Everything is terrible, but it gets better.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have hosted couch surfers before (though not through this service), and as my house already hosts people, I am signing up here as a potential surfer. However, if you're in ATX drop me a line and let's coordinate something! Zilker Park is beautiful any time of year.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I drove to Ann Arbor twice for a big conference somewhat impromptu; I slept in the basement of Black Elk two nights in a row. I once drove up to New York with some friends and stayed around on various of my friends' couches for far longer than I could really afford to, and that was pretty fun. I've played impromptu host to a lot of musicians and other interesting folks traveling through and I have really enjoyed meeting all of them.

Lately I've been camping more though (though you should ask me about the time I emerged from the desert to crash the Hotel Paisano)

I've enjoyed everyone I've met so far. People are awesome. I rarely need more than a day's notice.

Interests

reading, tinkering, writing, footbagging, logic, masticating, using unnecessary words to create innuendos where previously there were none, flagellating, absurdity, hoarding toilet paper, wondering how to solve impossible problems.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh, I have to give you SOME incentive to talk to me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm a rule-breaker, so here are several things.

While a touch inebriated I stared down a wild javelina in the Ft Davis mountains as it snarled at me. I tailed a coyote in Joshua Tree National Park until I noticed it had friends behind me. I've seen the Pacific ocean from a cliff on the side of the PCH.

In Tulum I saw the ocean from on top of a cliff in the broad daylight, standing next to pyramids and gorgeous verdant foliage. Yeah, I said verdant.

I sewed a button on my pants while riding a bumpy subway in Barcelona. Fortunately the wine steadied my hand.

Teach, Learn, Share

can teach: math, towel folding, cooking, some basic yoga curiosities, kombucha brewing, computer science, teaching (META), bike repair, probably other things

want to learn: carpentry, sailing, better cooking, more yoga, how to read musical notation, finger style guitar picking, how to sing better, the violin
