UPDATE...June 2008...I'm sorry that I no longer can host on a regular basis due to ongoing major health issues, therefore requiring friends, relatives or sometime a nurse occupying my couch for sleep-overs...
Having said that, my CouchSurfing friends are more than welcome anytime to join me for a visit, breakfast, lunch, dinner, good conversation or whatever the moment dictates depending on how I am feeling health-wise...
Despite the circumstances and life's ups and downs I look forward to meeting surfers who will be visiting Toronto...
I intend to keep as active as possible in the CS circuit..
I live in the trendy area of Toronto (Yonge/Eglinton), minutes from the subway, buses, shopping center, cinemas, restaurants, pubs, language schools, etc...
Thanks for visiting my profile.

Personal DescriptionI am a professional retired gentleman residing in the Yonge/Eglinton area in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I'm grounded, sane with a healthy sense of humor, good dispositon, trustworthy, confident, optimistic, impulsive and young at heart...
I live and love life to the fullest, and like to experience it deeply...
I enjoy my retirement, keeping an open mind and involving myself in many interesting and eclectic social activites and hobbies...My user name (Grasshopper) has nothing to do with the insect species...Goes way back to the TV Series in 1972, Kung Fu, starring David Carradine (Kwai Chang Caine - Grasshopper)...Long story, I was a loyal fan of the series and all my 5 younger brothers called me, 'Grasshopper'. However, I prefer to be called by my first name which is, Ron...
The photo above of me was taken on my 70th birthday, November 6, 2006...
I was thinking of attending a casting call for the remake of the motion pictures, 'Giant' and/or 'Rebel Without a Cause'...
Just as a joke as you might have concluded, 'moi' doing a James Dean impersonation :)
One is never too old to grow up.
Go figure ;)

From Maurizio Mangano Milano, Italy Dec 21, 2007 Positive The reference is Positive and not EXTREMELY positive JUST cause the system don't allow me to give an Extremely one because I never met Ron in REAL life but it is an EXTREMELY POSITIVE REFERENCE!!!!

RON! What a kind of amazing man!!!!
He gave me the "greetings" when i signed up in CS in february 2007 and i was so UNPOLITE and i didn't answer back, at least just a "Hi, tks"..
But the life is so strange sometimes... and when i become City Amb and i started to give my "Welcomes" to the new members i though... "oh my god... never replied to Ron".
I wrote him an email:
"Hi Ron,
i am Maurizio from milano.
I would like to say you, after long long time, TKS!!!!
I was sing in CS on 5 february 2007.. and the day after
you made something for me: you sent me your GREETING to
CS.
...."
this is just the start of the mail...
And his reply to my email was so nice, so warm, so amazing!! that I felt and I feel Ron like an old good friend... and I want to say to all in CS how much warm he is.
I HOPE, really hope, to meet you one day somewhere.
And I am very PROUD to have you in my friend list even if never met you till now.
see you soon Ron

From CharlesABQ Buenos Aires, Argentina Dec 7, 2007 Positive Since Ron welcomed me to the couchsurfing project last January we have shared an ever deepening friendship. I credit him with feeding my excitement for this special community. He most certainly is a godfather of couchsurfing and, more personally, has been a sortof godfather to me in my CS adventures. In Toronto, Ron was a highly considerate, energetic, and youthful host and we were honored to be his guests.
From Pepe Puerta Aleman Pamplona, Spain Sep 2, 2007 Positive When I first met Ron, I were impressed because he seem to be known by everybody. When I saw that he was not only known by the persons but also by the animals (the birds in the area where he lives always come to say "hi!" to him..) I was astonished!
Ron is one great host. When I arrived, he took me to a great restaurant to have great dinner, then he took me to his house, he made me feel like at home (or better!!). He showed what to do, and gave me tips on the best way to do it. He was always trying to make my life more easy. He went with me to show me some places...
There are so many great things to say and so little time!!. When I have more I will update the profile!!. Thanks Ron!!!!
From BATMAN Whistler, Canada Aug 13, 2007 Positive Many, many CSers know Grasshopper (Ron). I was surprised when I was traveling and many people asked if I had met Ron. I told them 'no', but apparently I was mistaken. Recently, when I contacted Ron, he had told me we had met over a year ago! At 70+, he's still sharp! I only have the highest of praise for Ron. He's got a young spirit, a fantastic attitude and loves to talk and laugh! He's still ready for the dance floor! I hope I have his spirit and attitude when I'm 70! It was a pleasure to meet Ron!
From Miss. Moneypenny Phoenix, United States Jul 17, 2007 Positive Ron is a man that you cannot appreciate all at once. I think this is because at first, you don't think anyone could be this good. Especially when you add to this the fact that he is so quiet and unassuming about his goodness. Ron is an angel, put here on earth, as a special gift to the rest of us. I don't know what we did to earn his sweet smile, great sense of humor, or open door to his home and life, but how lucky are we to have it? Thank you for all of it Ron, I love you, and I hope you know that.
From Steven Platteeuw Roeselare, Belgium Jul 12, 2007 Positive After numerous e-mail conversations, I finally got to meet Ron in Toronto. Even better, I was hosted by this wonderful individual and his lovely birds. Ron is humorous though subtle, 70ish though stuck in his twenties and realistic though optimistic. Ron shared some overwhelming stories about his life experiences with me which I found both inspiring and motivating. Being hosted by Ron has been a great experience. One I will never forget!
From Tom van Geest Rotterdam, Netherlands Jun 20, 2007 Positive Ron is the embodiment of the couchsurfing spirit, and if CS needs anything it’s a couple dozen more Rons. But in addition to being a CS deity, I also discovered he’s a genuinely great guy, as I finally got to meet him on a trip through Toronto. He’s warm and honest and down to earth, and liable to crack a joke at any time (sparing no one, including himself). He also knows how to treat his guests, whether it’s with good beer, delicious food, or just solid conversation, as he’s one of those people anyone can instantly connect with. You’d do well to stay with him and his rather charming budgies, which may look ferocious, but are really quite harmless...
From MrRico Montreal, Canada May 23, 2007 Positive Ron is this amazing CSer that you could only dream of meeting. Not only is he ageless but he likes a good genuine laugh. He is funny, entertaining, has a keen spirit and honestly, he is simply A D O R A B L E . I can't wait to surf his couch. Toronto: I'll be back!
From Julien Jammes Helsingborg, Sweden Mar 31, 2007 Positive We met for breakfast (miam miam delicious!) with other couchsurfers and then he showed me the famous Eaton center, talking about the city and typical phrases.Ron is a very easy going person, helpfull and so cool! see you soon, I transform your house in a museum when you want ;D
From Patrick Ralph Crossman Colon, Costa Rica Mar 28, 2007 Positive "I like to ride the horse in the direction it's going."
I feel so fortunate to have had the chance to meet this amazing and energetic staple of our CS community. And I can proudly say I was able to get him venturing out in downtown Toronto; what a time! Ron has such a wonderful philosophy and outlook on life and will leave a positive mark on your soul, guaranteed.
Take care, my friend, and thanks again for ghetto breakfast! ;)
From W123 Palmela, Portugal Mar 26, 2007 Positive What I can say about Mr. Grasshopper...
In a few words, Ron is more then a CS member, he's a true FRIEND !!!
It's a pleasure to me work with Ron in a so BIG project called New Member Welcome because CS it'a a part of us...
Great Moderator Great CS Ambassador
and the most important... Great Human
being
I need to say just one more thing for RON...

From Julie Sharon Qadima, Israel Mar 12, 2007 Positive Ron is one of those CS people you feel you just have to go and meet. So much of the CS spirit radiates from his profile. His every word is full of warmth and encouragement and he really knows how to bring the community together.
From Casey Fenton San Francisco, United States Mar 7, 2007 Positive Wisdom and youth all in one great guy! I am thankful that I finally got to meet Ron in person in Toronto - I have been looking forward to meeting him since early 2004 when we were fortunate enough to have him join the couchsurfing project. Ron is both wise and young at heart, has welcomed 10% of couchsurfers, has hosted more than 10, and continues to strongly support the network. Ron is a great guy - I highly recommend getting to know him and learning from his vast experiences and interesting outlook on life!
From Nicolaas Francken Perth, Australia Mar 5, 2007 Positive Ron is cool. I love his mission: "Deciding what to do for an Encore". He is one of those people that make CS such a great place to be. It will be encore encore encore encore...
From Michael Ortiz San Antonio, United States Feb 22, 2007 I think Grasshoper is doing great things with our group and I look forward to welcoming new surfers thanks to him! Thanks for the spelling tips too!
From Chris Payne Denver, United States Feb 15, 2007 Positive Ron made me laugh, gave me rest, and treated me better than I deserve. He is an enjoyable conversationalist, with a fantastic sense of humor and the best laugh. I wish I had met him sooner but I am grateful to have gotten to know Ron and his budgie Joey. Ron is a friend with a heart bigger than all of Toronto.
From SUSIGOTT Berlin, Germany Feb 2, 2007 Positive Ron was very helpful in getting me started on the CS Greeter program very quickly and if I ever make it to Ontario I will be sure to look him up.
From Lukasz Kruk Gdynia, Poland Jan 23, 2007 Positive Having an important position in the CS, he's extremely helpful and outgoing. After a few emails regarding technical CS stuff I got an invitation to Canada! THAT's the CS spirit!
From Geof Lambert Gold River, United States Jan 1, 2007 Positive Mr. Welcome Wagon...made me feel right at home on CS! Been awhile since I have been to Toronto, but looking forward to the next visit now!
From W_KHAN50 Mumbai, India Dec 1, 2006 Positive Ron really knows how to encourage his juniors and gets the best out of individuals. His approach is subtle, but very effective. Interacting with him, has enhanced my already high commitment towards CS. Though we have met online, he has become my mentor in CS. It would be a real pleasure to meet him in person some day
From NORBS Munich, Germany Nov 27, 2006 Positive I felt I needed to do more for the project, after a little while I found where I could help.
Since then, Ron gave me a huge support and guided me on what and how to do it the best way possible.
Without saying it, he teaches how to support CS and have it growing!
From Robert Goldschmidt Oberwöllstadt, Germany Nov 19, 2006 Positive Ron was an excellent host who made me feel at home with his friendly personality.
He was great at helping me get acqainted with the city directing me to places of interest of things to see and do.
He extended his trust by allowing me to have a key to his apartment which gave me the freedom to come and go as I please...
He treated me as a family member and took good care of me making sure I was comfortable in every way possible...
I consider Ron a close friend and look upon him as I would a family member.
While I was at his place a film crew from Ryerson University were doing a documentary about CouchSurfing and I was happy to partake in the film shoot by participating in the interviews with some good action shots. It was a thrilling experience that I will not forget. I definitely recommend Ron as a host and someone you should meet if you get the chance...
From Bruno Boulandet Paris, France Oct 28, 2006 Positive Well, funny thing, I could use most of the reference Ron left me to talk about him :) I am amazed that we share so many outlooks and ways (despite our little age difference, a little less than two scores if I got the idea, does seem that much expressed that way, right). Definitely something mystical about it :)
Ron is a inestimable asset to our community. Can you imagine he welcomed more than 8.000 of us !!! Still, he's humble and easy going, welcome you as a friend in his place where you can enjoy a incredible view on Toronto, and he is a cheering person, always seeing the brightest side in a person. Ron took the greatest care of me, and was the best host I could have hoped. Ron, the pleasure was mine, really :)
From Rachel Jack New Farm, Australia Sep 26, 2006 Positive Ron welcomed me to CS after I signed up and has been incredably supportive!! He sent me a wonderfull link to a site on childrens literature which I am now addicted to!! He is a very inspiring and caring person who I have grown to trust! I look forward to eventually meeting Ron some day - but for now it's all through letters on a page. :) THANKS RON!!!
From Emiliano de Gregorio Rome, Italy Sep 4, 2006 Positive In my life i not met often person like Ron. Me and Daria feel him like a family person...like a brother. He was an extraordinary host..In his home i felt like in my house. Ron can be considered the right choice if you want to know a very special person..thoughtful, tactful, trustworthy and funny. Now we have a good new friend. Thank You Ron!!!
From Regnbuesnegler Oslo, Norway Jul 25, 2006 Positive Grasshopper is the best bug in the world of couchsurfing! :-)
From DANI! Toronto, Canada Jul 22, 2006 Positive Ron and I joined couchsurfing around the same time back in 2004 when there were less than 1000 couchsurfers! We have been ambassadors together, and even though we (finally!) only met in May of this year, I feel like I've known him for a while. He's a very kind, intelligent, and energetic guy who is a great asset to CS! Meet him if you can!! |
