Personal DescriptionSee my website ( www.fliptophead.com ) for the whole nine yards.
Since March '04 I've been on the go, be it on my motorcycle, truck, of with my thumb, with the goal of sleeping on at least one couch of a stranger in every state in the USA... yet somehow I ended up in Montreal for three months, New Zealand for four months, Holland for a while, and then blissfully (and quite loosely) based in the SF Bay area. Hmm...
Anyway, I also bring along my own couch! I'm dragging Lucy, the wee inflatable Red Couch, all over the country, er, the world to get photographs of her in every state (and then some).
I'm almost always on the go. I like new places and new things. It's a big world and I'd like to live in a little bit of all of it, even if just for a while in most of it. I absolutely love traveling and plan to keep on going for a long, long time. More than seeing new places I love meeting new people and experiencing a new perspective at least every day when possible.CouchSurfing ExperienceOver these last 4+ years I've been on someone else's couch almost every night. I've gotten to know so many amazing people from Hawaii to Prague to New Zealand to Amsterdam. I've shot skeet in the backwoods of Georgia and attended a royal wedding of a prince in Denmark - all because of the people I met through this site. Some of my best friendships and connections have sprung up as a result of CouchSurfing. Really, I'm just getting started...InterestsI'm seeing the world while meeting as many new people as possible. I also bike (motorcycle and mountain bike), bang on my drums, scuba, and hitchhike in foreign countries. Also: worldwide travel, finding the apex of life's moments, new connections, a fine whiskey or scotch and tequila-tonics, reconnects with old friends, greener pastures, what's around that corner?, oceans, photography, people that are smarter than me, delicious beer, driving fast, old motorcycles that reek of gasoline (mine is a '81 Silverwing), cross-country hitchhiking, strong independent women who also like being taken care of now and then, great wine coupled with tantalizing conversation, finding the full beauty of "right now", discovering more of what i don't know or understand, erotica, surrealism, sensuality, fresh perspectives, inflatable couches, couch lovers, small towns, strong communities, New Zealand, non-traditional relationships, open roads, one-on-one, group dynamics, siestas and fiestas, great storytellers, people waving their freak flags, the great unknown, vagabonds, seekers, intimacy, nostalgia, hope, open minds, celebration, intoxication, inspiration, motivation, and, of course, adventure!Philosophy"If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things." -Henry Miller
"You only live once, and the way I live, once is enough." -Frank Sinatra
Here's another: "Make every day your masterpiece." I find little reason to live wholly for tomorrow when today is right here. If today can't count to the fullest then what's the point with worrying about the next one? I'm a big fan of living in the moment and learning more about how to "be here now."
The 9-5 "American dream" just isn't for me. I like to enjoy my life as much as I can and make my own path. I love just seeing as much of the world as possible while meeting the good people who inhabit it. Also by Miller, "I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive."Music, Movies, BooksI usually buy way more books than I finish. A Chinese proverb says "it's better to travel 1,000 miles than read 1,000 books." That being said I read a lot of travel-related books (Tim Cahill, Bill Bryson) and dig Alex Garland and Tom Robbins among others. I buy books MUCH faster than I read them. Most of them have a bookmark somewhere near the halfway point and I'm usually reading four or five at a time. Current favorite book: Jitterbug Perfume. I read that book at JUST the right time (thanks to N. in Kentucky). I love maps and planning new adventures, even if only in my head. Whenever I can I bang on my drums or any other set that's handy I'm a happy boy. I love discovering new music and trading mix CDs with strangers and friends. I've been in a few bands and would love to get involved in another one day, hopefully much sooner than later. Pearl Jam, Pulp Fiction, Six Feet Under, Deadwood - all brilliant.Types of People I enjoyI'm a student in the School of Life and the people of the world are my teachers. I enjoy how all types of people continue to teach and inspire me.Teach, Learn, ShareI want people to understand that there IS an alternative to the consumer-driven lifestyle most of us (Americans, particularly) are conditioned and expected to settle into and be smothered by. Most people don't realize how easy and FREEING it is to take off and blaze your own trail. My "job" now is to teach and inspire others how to step over that line and find your way, all along while i'm finding my own. I'm on the hunt for a method of the self-sustainable perpetual road trip, or at the very least a lifestyle that affords the same sense of extraordinary adventure and intrigue that i've quickly grown accustomed to and know I don't have to settle for anything less. I'm getting better and better at it as I keep on truckin' and I love to share the tips I've picked up along the way. You can learn probably a lot already on my website but many more juicy tidbits are on the way. Keep checking back - this is only the beginning. One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneI've been invited to (and attended) a 50th anniversary party in Denmark with people I just met, spent Christmas with new friends from all around the globe in the Australian outback, hitchhiked thousands of miles on 3 continents, and filled in as a last minute sound board engineer at a concert in France (also for someone i had just met). Every day is truly an adventure.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Holy See (Vatican City), Italy, Jamaica, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States LIVED: Canada, United States WANTS TO GO: Antarctica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Bodies of water, Brazil, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, El Salvador, Fiji, Gaza Strip, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, The Bahamas, Uruguay, Venezuela References
From Jon Cordoba Tempe, United States Sep 29 Positive The first person I remember seeing step out of the white van was Jim. Bunny ears and ginormous glasses wearing a robe. I knew this cat was somthing else. I would have liked to get to know a little more about Jim. Guess it will have to be at TS 2010. Cheers Jim.
From Erin Saunders Sebastopol, United States Aug 10 Positive I met Jim at the Collective in Samara during their last week there. Although everyone was very busy, they still welcomed me with smiles and hugs! Hope to see him back in SF! Thanks Jim!
From Amelia Borntrager Nosara, Costa Rica Aug 8 Positive Jim and I met at the collective in Samara when he helped us get a truck (The Hulk) from San Jose to Guanacaste. Then, he came to Nosara for my birthday dinner/party/reggae extravaganza! I was glad he wore his bunny ears throughout the night even if the local Ticos might have thought he was a bit "off" ;) The night went by way to fast and I can't wait till the next time we get to hang out and I get the full Jim Stone affect!
From Nelson Rodriguez Bogota, Colombia Jun 29 Positive jim its a really fun person. with him i ejoided the pride. diring my state in the base camp, he always was really friendly. thanks for all.
From Shirley Lewis Istanbul, Turkey Jun 26 Positive I met Jim through my husband Gadget. Since then he has surfed at my home and helped me move to basecamp! Jim is tons of fun, very laid back and a fellow Texan, what more needs to be said?
From Andrew Adi C Reedsburg, United States Jun 22 Positive I met Jim on the second day of Tentsurf '09 during the wacky drinking game. Instead of drinking, I opted to photograph the wackiness instead. I wish I had more time to get to know Jim. He's a warm person and a good listener. Happy travels, Jim!
From Joni Renee Zalk Boulder, United States Jun 21 Positive I cooked a meal for everyone during the camp out. So Jim gave me a kiss on the cheek.
The other cheek was jealous.
From April Menegazzo Denver, United States Jun 17 Positive Bunarchy!!!
Ah, we have the same bath robes/smoking jackets and ears... could be my long lost twin??? Well lost no more, I'm super duper thrilled we found our connection and were able to rock hotpink hair at Tentsurf!
Jim is a stellar character and fabulous addition to any bonfire or party. I had a blast chilling on the stage and playing inquisitive card games. Many great ideas, a true leader and perhaps even worth of the title: provocateur of wickedly fun randomness.
With any luck, we can reconvene our bunarchy late this summer out West.
Waiting for the Burn! See you soon :)
From Andy Wright Denver, United States Jun 16 Positive I met Mr. Jim bowling in Denver late one night the week before the TentSurf in Colorado.
We talked a bit, probably cheersed a few. Great to see organization coming back to Colorado to hang out and do it the way we do it.
From Carlos Lopez Salt Lake City, United States Jun 15 Positive see you in san francisco!! my house is available for you everytime ok.
From Dayna Buri Moscow, United States Jun 15 Positive It went down like this: between hangovers and good conversations, I look to my right, and there is Jim, rolling out of his tent with a headlamp and bunny ears still on, still donning the bathrobe from the night before. After that, I knew we would be instant friends. He is CouchSurfing in every aspect, and I would love to jump into his great hugs again someday!
From Kyle Trammell Salt Lake City, United States Jun 14 Positive Jim and his group of friends were killer to have around. Although they were only able to stay for one night, they were a polite and open minded group. True CSers. Jim was a really chill guy, and was great to have a glass or so of wine with. Anyone of these CSers are welcome back whenever they please. Cheers.
From Heather Smith Fayetteville, United States May 23 Positive Thanks for the This American Life! That rocked!
From Amy and Dave Chiang Mai, Thailand May 11 Positive Jim is easy company and up for anything! He's the most interesting professional guest I know.
From Crystal Murphy Birmingham, United States May 7 Positive I don't really know what I was expecting when I met Jim...but he certainly managed to shatter all of whatever notions I had, and made me just want to give him a big hug. He is a fun, crazy, delightful, to-the-point, and cool guy. He also has some pretty rad dance moves ;)
Now I have to come back and hang out with him....and acquaint myself with the red couch :p
Jim...thanks for being so awesome!
From Elton Monterroza Fort Smith, United States May 2 Positive Jim is part of the crew that makes this AMAZING community happen, i was lucky enough to meet him and the rest of the crew in san francisco and surfed the couchsufing house couch. We owe this bunch of crazy people a whole lot. To Jim and the crew, THANK YOU.
From Kellen Kjera Portland, United States Mar 28 Positive Jim has proven to me that there are really awesome people out there. He is always down for crazy adventures and has lots of great Ideas.
I recommend you get to know this dude!
From Ben Hanna San Francisco, United States Mar 25 Positive Jim Stone. Well, after living and working with him for a long time, driving from Alaska to Burningman - generally spending way to much time in each others company, I can say that this man never lets you down.
If you say lets go do something, he is out the door. If you have nothing to do, he has a list a mile long. He knows someone everywhere and always has a smile on his face. He truly cares about people and will go out of his way to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. Get to know him.
From BUBBALOU Miami, United States Mar 21 Positive I heard of Jim long before I met him, so when I made it out to San Francisco, meeting him was my mission, and he doesn't disappoint. He's a fun, affable guy who truly reflects the spirit of Couchsurfing, of which his influence is most apparent. I hope we get to meet up again soon, be it in Berkeley, Miami, or some far off place.
From Daniel Belkin New York, United States Mar 21 Positive I was a zombie, but he didn't say anything about it.
From Michelle Daubert Mammoth Lakes, United States Mar 15 Positive Thanks again to all the Couchsurfing Base Camp people for letting me couchsurf on random night! I very much enjoyed playing the witch, priest, and detective game! Very amusing!
From Jorge Torres Bogota, Colombia Mar 12 Positive This guy and his girlfriend are the best hosts I've had!, be prepared for unlimited fun and excess whenever you are around them.
From Jamie Franzen Prescott, United States Mar 11 Positive Sometimes you meet someone and the second you cross paths, you absolutely love 'em instantaneously. No doubt Jim has one of the most beautiful souls on the planet! Can't wait to see you at Burning Man, amigo...muah!
From Gadget San Francisco, United States Mar 10 Positive Are you kidding! Jim is so amazing and selfless when it comes to keeping the whole system running. He is a dear friend, a colleague and I could not recommend anyone for a hosting or surfing experience any more. Do yourself a bog favor, get to know Jim.
From Patrick Miller New Orleans, United States Mar 6 Positive I stayed at the collective, and everyone was great. He set me up with a bed, linens and we chatted a few times.
From Ryan McCluskey Greenwood Village, United States Dec 28, 2008 Positive Jim, thanks for the visit and bringing some fine friends. Hope to catch up with you again when we have more time... I think you may be the sort with endless entertaining stories of travel & life. Look me up in Denver if your passing that way.

From Jessie Norden Upland, United States Dec 18, 2008 Positive Jim is funky, fun, and generally a complete sweetheart. He lives in a super pink bedroom and I think that says a lot about him. Overall, a great guy who marches to the beat of his own drum and someone that I would love to get to know better.
From Cesar Lisbon, Portugal Nov 30, 2008 Positive Jim is a great person, calm but funny, I hope to spend more time with him in the future!
From -mystic- San Francisco, United States Nov 17, 2008 Positive If memory serves me correctly, I've met Jim twice: at both parties basecamp has had thus far. The age on his profile may read 31 but in my opinion, he's ageless. The enthusiasm of a youth coupled with the wittyness and quirkiness of an old soul sums up my impression. He was a ton of fun both times I've seen him and anybody whose ear he has (including myself) were treated to an awesome convo. Here's to more good times ahead, dude! :)
From JC Allenby Portland, United States Nov 16, 2008 Positive Jim is a great guy, a real CS team member, it was a pleasure to meet him and get to interact with the crew in Berkeley; I was quite impressed at how busy and involved everyone was. I'd highly recommend meeting him if you get the chance. Hope to run into you again!
From Pam Harris Whitehorse, Canada Oct 2, 2008 Positive Jim was a great surfer. Good company and really easy going. It was a short visit so maybe one day we will meet again!!

From Debra Swinson Tempe, United States Sep 17, 2008 Positive I had a blast partying with Jim. Definitely a free spirit with a wealth of knowledge to offer on the CS community. He was very down to earth and he even gave me a foot rub!

From Dave Bullivant Tavistock, United Kingdom Sep 8, 2008 Positive Jim is a great guy & a great host. He was only too happy to host me & Jenny & made us feel right at home right away. Jim is funny, has a very chilled out, welcoming attitude & within the first day of meeting him i felt as though i'd made a friend.
From Nick Racz Scottsdale, United States Aug 26, 2008 Positive Jim has an infectious passion for life. He is a warm and caring guy that exudes calm and creates a peaceful vibe. He also gives really good hugs. While in Alaska Jim and I caught a few halibut in bouncy waters with a captain from hell. What a day- See you again Jim.

From T.J. Kelly Kamloops, Canada Aug 16, 2008 Positive Had a blast with Jim at the Alaska Collective. Very much appreciated the tour of Homer on the first night. Also very much appreciated the lending of the fuzzy red costume during the BBQ. Looking forward to hanging out with Jim again! (Though perhaps I will refrain from fuzzy clothing next time:P)
From Damon Burden Saint Augustine, United States Aug 8, 2008 Positive Me and Jim had an experience on a boat unlike no other while fishing out of Homer Alaska, I could try to explain accept you'd think I was crazy.

From OneDeepBreath New York, United States May 11, 2008 Positive Mr. Stone: THE global nomad of CouchSurfing. This man surfs perpetually and professionally. Always on the move, gathering more experiences, giving him a seasoned perspective and more stories than you can shake a stick at... plus the man can do a mean Elvis impression with so much sincerity it's as close to the real deal as possible.

From Katrin Mager Dresden, Germany Apr 22, 2008 Positive I'm happy you had some time for me! Pity that we didn't really got to know each other. But it definetly was a very good first meeting. See you again somewhere!
From DiamondinLondon Harrow, United Kingdom Apr 20, 2008 Positive Jim was my very first point of contact with the Thai collective. After chatting to him on the phone before going to Thailand I knew he'd be an awesome person to hang with and once I got there was more then proven right. A definite modern day gentleman who was always looking out for the well being of others.
From LAURA GAMSE Cape Town, South Africa Apr 17, 2008 Positive Jim saved my life from the evil flying monkeys who tried to plant drugs on me and throw me off the cliffs of Thailand. And that ain't no small endeavor. It is an utter travesty that the scale here stops at Extremely Positive. If it went a few notches higher, I would choose the flashing and blinking one that has Mr. T jump out of the screen, grab you by the collar and say "I pity the fool who don't know Jim Stone!" If you don't, get ON it.
From May Sanguannuan Bangkok, Thailand Apr 17, 2008 Positive Despite the fact that I didnt see Jim when he was in BKK, to meet him in one of my fav town, SF, is one of the memorable things for me for my B-day trip:)Jim is so hugable and really, i mean, really kind!!I'm so glad I finally met the guy and yet, cook for him and our friends before I left SF!!Eventhough I didnt see the famous Pooh costume, his hugs are still warm and make me feel like i am hugging the Pooh Bear:)
Jim,Dear..U r gonna have to come back here and do the street food exploring with me one day!!BKK, awaits for ya:)
From Susan Livingston Castro Valley, United States Apr 15, 2008 Positive Here is a guy like me - co-creating the world of the future in the present. It is a comfort to this tribal elder that such people in the next generation are ready to take up the torch and spread the light.
I'm grateful to Jim for vouching for me. I continue to be amazed and delighted by the central place he occupies in my CS network!
From Gabriel Stempinski San Francisco, United States Apr 12, 2008 Positive Jim is a party looking for a place to happen.
-nuff said ;)
From AMYPRIS San Francisco, United States Apr 10, 2008 Positive Jim caught a ride up to Chico with me and got to cram into the back seat. This man has a mind blowing collection of nail polish. Me likey.
From Ryan Boyle Bangkok, Thailand Apr 8, 2008 Positive Mr. Stone the dude with the cool pants randomly showed up to a party I hosted in San Fran. The dude can party all night, yet keeps chilled cool calm vibe with him throughout the night. Champagne and Vodka in Alaska sometime this year my friend (Well just Vodka for me!)
From Miss Mandie Mullumbimby, Australia Apr 7, 2008 Positive I’m not sure there is much more I can add here that can further convince you that Jim is most definitely someone you want to meet in your lifetime, but I’ll give it a good try! This guy is fun personified – he is someone who will make the effort to connect with those around him and he spreads the CS spirit around the globe with ease. My time at the Thai Collective wouldn’t have been the same without him – he inspired me to work harder, challenged me to party harder and just generally brightened up each day with his antics and stories. Love ya Jim!
From LiteraryGypsy Islands, China Apr 4, 2008 Positive Who wouldn't want to be a friend of the Red Couch Guy?--who's looking pretty Thai these days....I'd first had interaction with Jim when I asked to be considered for a leadership position and to join the Thai Collective, and he invited me to a related working group. As my own work ultimately precluded my becoming a team coordinator or attending the Collective, I was thrilled to find that Jim would be passing through Seoul as he Collective-hopped (from Thailand to Alaska--now, that's a switch!), and that I'd have another chance to meet him. Over lunch we had fabulous conversation about both CS and Korea, and I was pleasantly surprised to meet Tech Jeff as well! Jim, I hope our paths cross again before long, and that we get to know one another much better. Best of everything to you!
From Margaret Zachry Pine Mountain, United States Apr 2, 2008 Positive Made me want another surfer soon! It was great having Jim around, so easy and fun. Oddly, when Jim was around I talked a little more and stayed up a little later. Surfing is about the people as much as the places. He is so personable if he comes this way again, my friends have alrady invited him to stay with them...over my dead body.
From Gaye Gunay Bodrum, Turkey Apr 1, 2008 Positive Full of energy and joy!!! we spend one night all together. it was one of the best party and dance since i m in Thailand
From Virginia Burg Neusiedl am See, Austria Mar 25, 2008 Jimis a very concentrated person with a lot of clear energies.
From Andrew Otto San Francisco, United States Mar 22, 2008 Positive Jim is smiley and loves the Jameson. He has introduced me to the wonders of meat on a stick, and has been gracious enough to share his ant covered cookies.
From Charish Badzinski La Crosse, United States Mar 5, 2008 Positive Jim is dependable, hard-working, and tremendous fun to spend time with! I can't imagine what the Thai Collective would have been like without him--he is such an integral part of the richness of that experience for me, it's nearly impossible to separate. I trust Jim whole-heartedly, and I anxiously await the day he sleeps on my couch in Wisconsin!
From Liv Allermand Aarhus, Denmark Mar 1, 2008 Positive I was very impressed with Jim's languege skills. He actually helped me with my danish. Thank you Jim!
From Benjamin Ranta Ishpeming, United States Feb 28, 2008 Positive I met Jim by happenstance when he drove past me looking for another CouchSurfer at the bus stop in Pai, Thailand. This guy has a great outlook on life and I ardently subscribe to his belief in long, open-ended travel. He is an ideal guest, travel companion, friend, you-name-it. I'd vouch for Jim ten times over. Thanks again for the lift Jim!
From Johnny Colden Oakland, United States Feb 22, 2008 Positive From what I know of Jim, I like of Jim. At the same time, I admit what I know of Jim isn’t much. One thing I can say is he looks dead sexy to me in his sombrero picture on the CS Thailand collective wall. Another thing I can say is I never heard him complain, even during the most deadly of Thailand-Tummy sickness. I hope we meet again Jim ;)
From Nilufar and Mathew Smith San Francisco, United States Feb 19, 2008 Positive Jim was a great person to meet. Even though he was a bit ill at the time we met, he always had a smile on his face and was very positive! - That says a lot! :D
Thank you Jim for your great hospitality. You are always welcome on our couch!
From ROKKEN247 Portland, United States Feb 3, 2008 Positive I am 99.9% sure that I wrote Jim a reference back when he stayed with me in 2005, so perhaps it disappeared in the crash of CS version 1. Anyhoo, while he may not need any more references as far as quantity goes, I want to write another now, as this guy was my first couch surfer. His visit was such great fun, and he was such a friendly and interesting person, that I thank him for setting the tone for all of my future CS encounters.
From Lisa Sampson Adelaide, Australia Jan 24, 2008 Positive Great energy, great to talk to. You will be delighted if you come across Jim in your travels.

He's one of a kind, a true original.
From Paul Wouters Rotterdam, Netherlands Jan 20, 2008 Positive Jim is part of the tech team. We had some nice conversations. I'm sure I'll see him again.
From Matt whatley San Francisco, United States Jan 20, 2008 Positive Jim is a quality individual.

From SOLSTICEBABY Paris, France Dec 27, 2007 Positive Jim's become someone I'm fond of seeing appear and reappear in and around my life. A fun, easygoing, surprising person, he's also a big help in Cs V.V. stuff as well.

From Rob Archangel Harrisonburg, United States Dec 17, 2007 Positive Jim was great company when we met in Roanoke. After being encouraged to contact him, a fellow passer-through of Roanoke, he called me and we hung out for the night, along with other folks. After everyone else had taken off, he shuttled me around to show me the town, and though he had an early morning obligation, hung out with me till midnight until I caught my departing bus. Great guy!
From Diederik en Esther de Vries Rotterdam, Netherlands Dec 12, 2007 Positive Jim is an very easygoing guy. We had a lot of laughter at Walters place, while running the CSC.

From Ivan Phillips London, United Kingdom Dec 6, 2007 Positive Although Jim didnt stay with my in Vegas (I didnt read my email in time to say yes to him) - I invited him out to moon nightclub that night, to experience the full on ' vegas experience'.
Jim is a VERY cool guy - I guess im not the first person to say this though. He was the one who told me about burning man. Although i had heard of it, i had never really thought of going to it - however jim convinced me that i should go, and i went - and i LOVED it. I would NOT have gone if I hadnt of met Jim, so I am very thankful that i met him.
From Walter Heck Khon Kaen, Thailand Dec 4, 2007 Positive Jim Stone, he surfed my apartment during the RCSC there. We had some good nights out and soem nice talks. Jim is a solid guy with a heart of gold! I admire people who try to pick up skills (programming in particular here) and give their best to get good at it! Without him CS wouldn't be what it is today!
From TeDeVan Kurzweil New York, United States Dec 4, 2007 Positive We had an old fashion pow wow. He is one of the OG's of couchsurfing. There are a few people on this site everyone knows as speaks well of and Jim Stone is truly one of couchsurfing's glitterati.
From Weston Hankins Guadalajara, Mexico Oct 31, 2007 Positive Ever since I met him, never seen him dim
So good at nim, never rolling on the rim

Love you bro!
From FG99 Newcastle, Australia Oct 16, 2007 Positive Jim is a fun, friendly, easy-going guy!
From Katrina Mohr Boulder, United States Oct 12, 2007 Positive Jim is a truly adventurous soul. I really enjoyed listening to tales of his travels and what outfits he wore during these times. (I would love to have seen a Pooh Bear running around Curry Village). I may have beat him in the first Scrabble game, but he killed me in the second so a tie breaker is in order. Thank you for coming at the last minute and sharing my last weekend in Yosemite with me. I had a wonderful time.
From Klaire Rueckert Seattle, United States Oct 10, 2007 Positive Yay! After BM 07, I bumped into Jim again with Ben at the deep end, 08... minus the wild goggles! Hopefully our paths will cross again soon. If not within the year, I sincerely hope to see him back home in 09!
From Marc Watley Oakland, United States Oct 9, 2007 Positive Funny how Couchsurfing leads to so many friendships with grounded, generous, kind people. Jim is no exception...clearly working to make CS a more fun and useful experience for all. Look forward to helping out Jim and hanging out at more CS gatherings! Kudos!
From CRASH ANOVA San Francisco, United States Sep 19, 2007 Positive I was in a serious bind at the end of Burning Man. I needed to transport all my gear from our camp to our ride home's camp on the other side of Black Rock City. Jim came through in a pinch and lent me his pickup, no questions asked. Very cool! And it helped me out a ton. Later, we got to ride out to the trash fence together on an art car. Jim's a really nice guy.
From Princess Rachelina San Francisco, United States Sep 18, 2007 Positive this guy is a riot. very amusing:) the more i see jim, the more he grows on me. I hope he sticks around sf. jim feels like long lost family:)

From Kasper Souren Brussels, Belgium Sep 12, 2007 I first met Jim in Montreal, then again in California and New Zealand.
I don't agree with many things Jim writes (while on CouchSurfing's paycheck), but I have respect for the fact that he's writing them openly.
I am sorry for the trouble I caused him (and that I might be causing in the future) and the negativity that I fired at him, but I sincerely hope we can be friends again, some day.
From ANU* Amsterdam, Netherlands Sep 12, 2007 + We had some good times working and hanging out together in (way too many ;) CS collectives in the past year, and I felt very welcome on my stays at the house up the hill. I totally appreciate all the work Jim has done and is doing for CS, and see him as a great volunteer & employee for this organization.
- However, I do not enjoy him doubting my integrity in public without sound reasoning, or observing the (also recent) treatment towards other past volunteers who both of us worked with for months on end. For this reason, spending time on his couch would at this time be somewhat challenging for me.
= Nevertheless, I wish you the best of luck with the new job, and hope it works out for you and CS. I still hope to consider you as a friend, and meet again one day with less bitter feelings (from both sides)
From Peggy Fok Redwood City, United States Sep 11, 2007 Positive He's so cool, eccentric and mad!
From TWINKLETOES Townsville, Australia Sep 6, 2007 Positive We love Jim. Whenever he showed up with his little bunny ears or Elvis outfit smiles appeared on our faces. He's a great guy to be around and burning man wouldn't have been the same for us without him.
We really hope to meet up with him again on our travels and will totally go out of our way to see him again!
From VEGASJAMIE Las Vegas, United States Aug 31, 2007 Positive I like his purple toes and finger nail! He was a very gracious guest and was a perfect gentleman the whole time. I would host him again any time.
From Noemie Cliche Trudeau Montreal, Canada Jul 24, 2007 Positive I met Jim while washing the dishes in the Montreal collective and we finaly got to know more each other little by little with the milion of rides he gave me in his Texas truck =) and when he surfed my couch. And then more when we met again in SF and on our impromptu road trip to Mexico. Jim has a really special something that makes him an extraordinary person. Maybe it's the fact he chose a life that has nothing to do with the commun pattern or maybe it's because he is so involved in everything he does... but he is unforgettable .
You definitly have to meet this professionnal vagabond and ask him for a ride in his truck. Can't wait to see you again =)

From Bruno Boulandet Paris, France Apr 5, 2007 Positive He, I met the red couch guy twice, but I never saw the couch !!! And then I bumped into him 2 years later on a couch at the Lost Penguins in Black Rock City. I can't think of a better person with whom to share the expansion of my world view. From TOSHFOOLERY San Francisco, United States Oct 31, 2006 Positive I am pissed that I haven't actually hung out with him in person, he is practically a couchsurfing celebrity or garden gnome proportions, after all. From Ricardo Roberge Montreal, Canada Aug 14, 2006 Positive Two other CS volunteers and I joined Jim for a concert in one of those cramped joints you'd find in NYC's Alphabet City. I think Jim is an easy going and very approachable guy. Wish I had spent more time at the Collective. Jim seems to have a particular ability to motivate people.
From Aylin Loğlişi Amsterdam, Netherlands Aug 11, 2006 Positive Jim is too cool for school-- or at least cool enough to have a really cool inflatable red couch and travel alllll over with it, which is super-inspiring to me, as I REALLY REALLY want to travel so much more! I met him at the CouchSurfing Collective in Montreal, but didn't really get to to talk to him too much about his life and travels, as we were all working crazy amounts. However, I did get the overall sense that he's super-laid-back (which is great), people-friendly (of course!), a positive thinker, and a fun person...He is THE red couch guy, after all.

I was so glad to realise that someone also had an urge to excercise their mental muscle that way.
I could ask any favor to Jim and he would be so nice to you and help you out.
I would definitely like to sit down with beers one day and hear his story touring around the world.
See you soon in another collective, and I am sure that we get to play buckgammon, checkers, poker, and much more!!
Take care Jim, and keep up with the great job!! :D

From Cari Baun Myrtle Beach, United States Jul 27, 2006 Positive Come back to Myrtle Beach!! It isn't very often that you can find someone who appreciates ALL of the positive things surrounding them. It was really great talking about the accomplishments and dreams that can be achieved through the kindness of strangers. Most people are driven by fear and choose paths to avoid such a confrontation in their mind, and so they never come to fully understand the giving nature of the human spirit. If you have a moment, when hosting Jim... listen to a story or two and you'll see all the wonderful things that can not only happen for him, but also for yourself! Be adventurous and see where the kindness of strangers can take you. It's the most eye-opening way to see the world... and couchsurfing is a great start! Thanks Jim, It's easy to remember stories when you're sharing them, but sometimes... it's just nice to be reminded of our good fortune!
From Joel Haffey Atlanta, United States Jul 26, 2006 Positive I met Jim as he passed through Atlanta on his cross country adventure. I helped him organize a meet-up with some local CS members. I enjoyed hanging out with him and listening to his stories. He's welcome in Atlanta any time!

From Dawn Stenberg Melbourne, United States Jul 25, 2006 Positive Jim is one of those people that really loves life. He was a blast to hang out with. I admire his ambition to see the world and meet new people. We hope to meet him again until then...Happy Traveling Jim! Don't forget us in Florida!
From Julienne Lottering Toronto, Canada Jul 24, 2006 Positive Jim Stone is someone I would be stranded on a desert island with, wait even better, dessert island. Jim will never be a lost love, i'm keepin' you!
From Claudia Bérubé Montreal, Canada Jul 23, 2006 Positive This amazing guy is really good at living life to its fullest. He even took a swim in the dark and cold Saint Lawrence river, minutes before sunrise in Québec city... great and BRAVE guy! I can't have enough of his hugs!
From BROOKEANDMICHAEL Berkeley, United States Jul 22, 2006 Positive right place, wrong time! We were hoping to meet up with Jim in Australia, but somehow we managed to miss each other! Oh well... we hooked Jim up with a few friends instead and they seemed to be as impressed with him as we are. We're looking forward to meeting him in person one day -- but in the mean time, happy travels, buddy!
From Frédéric Brodeur Paris, France Jul 21, 2006 Positive Jim is just an amazing guy... he made me feel at ease when I arrived at the CSC. And is red couch is so comfortable I could pass a week in it! :)
Hope to see you again !
From Scott Atlanta, United States Jul 21, 2006 Positive I spent 6 days in Montreal hanging out with Jim and the rest of the collective and walked away feeling like I'd known Jim for years. We will drink scotch and sit on the back porch again soon...only the where is still in question.
From Cari Laythorpe Southampton, United Kingdom Jul 21, 2006 Positive Safe and red and the couch swimming with beer in an armchair of heat and low air-con from around the World to Montreal.
Rides and chats and meetings ensue cryptically.

From Honey Ruppel San Diego, United States Jul 19, 2006 I was Jim's Host! I hosted Jim in Waikiki for a night when he was passing through Oahu.
I would host again.
Oh and he loves the water!
From Katelyn Kimmons San Francisco, United States Jul 19, 2006 Motorcycles and balistic kittens. Jim taught me many amazing things...that dirt soaks up antifreeze, that you can park in a no parking zone as long as you have an inflatable red couch, ect. He is welcome in my home anytime, provided he can stand kittens in his hair at 7 in the morning.
From Travis Moon Brisbane, Australia Jul 19, 2006 damn that yank's tall. yeah, jim's good times, nice too, he even put up with my mate dissin USA all night
From Massimiliano Arione Rome, Italy Jul 19, 2006 Very nice guy. We missed him just the next day after he left us :-)
From Sandro Pallavicini Bolzano, Italy Jul 19, 2006 He is a very nice person!! Jim stayed with us for 3 days. He is a really gentleman: he was the only one that helped the old mother of a friend of ours to go downstairs taking her! And he slept in our house in a room in which we have 2 noisy parrots, without killing them!!
A simply, pleasant, polite, intelligent and educated person!
From TJ Henderson Philadelphia, United States Jul 19, 2006 A man & his couch !!! Jim stayed with Jack & I for a couple of days when he was in Philadelphia.
He was a pleasure to have around, tons of great stories.
I would highly recommend having Jim as a CS guest.
Jim treated our home with a great deal of respect. Even if he had stayed longer he would not have worn out has welcome at all...
From WILDDUCK Nimbin, Australia Jul 19, 2006 a seriously good guy. jim arrived a couple of weeks before xmas (having decided to forego a fruit picking job!) and was going to stay for two or three days, then deciding to stay through xmas here....not sure whether he is ever going to leave, but that's cool, as he relates so well to every one
From Marco Grasso Nottingham, United Kingdom Jul 19, 2006 I would have spent more time with him. I would have liked to host Jim at my place. Unfortunately at last I can't, he understood my problem in a sec and didn't take offence at it. He is an interesting, sensitive and absolutely trustworthy guy.I hope to see him again in better days.
From Robert Doty Fernandina Beach, United States Jul 19, 2006 He stayed in my aft cabin! Jim stayed in the aft cabin of my sailboat for six nights. While he managed to accidently set his personal motorcycle on fire during his visit, he was very considerate about my boat. Heck, he even FOLDED THE SHEETS AND BLANKETS he'd been using in the aft cabin before he left. None of my visiting friends or family EVER does this! I consider Jim to be a very considerate CouchSurfer and also a personal friend. He's welcome aboard Candide anytime.
From KAIN5953 Clearfield, United States Jul 19, 2006 My First Couch Surfer. Jim is one of the coolest people ever. If you ever get the chance to let him surf your couch, go for it. He's welcome to couch surf with me again anytime. If the rest of the people on this site are anything like him, then I can't wait to have more people stay.
From S JOY Fort Myers, United States Jul 19, 2006 cool dude. Fliptophead & I arrived about the same time to Rainbow Retreat in Nimbin, Australia. Fliptophead is the kind of person you like to have around, he just blends right in and shares huge smiles and laughter with ya. You must ask him about his Flight to Paris story-one just never knows...
From Kurt Milam Vienna, Austria Jul 19, 2006 Jim's a cool, laid back traveller from Texas. Jim stayed several nights at my apartment in Vienna, and I can vouch for him as a cool, courteous guest. Check out his story at fliptophead.com - he's been travelling since March, 2004. Awesome! |
