Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
Couch Available: Maybe Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 3
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: DependsWelcome. I have a house in West Berkeley with a couple-sized futon and an extra-comfy purple couch, a nice kitchen, and two bathrooms. It's a 20 minute walk / $6 cab ride from BART (the subway to San Francisco or the airport), and close to food shops and restaurants (and Berkeley's best $4 burrito.)
I particularly enjoy hosting people who are intelligent, playful, quick to laugh, perceptive, and appreciative of the wonder of being alive.
Among my friends are autodidacts, sex therapists, sadhus, circus freaks, and nonviolent revolutionaries - if you are or have loved one or all of these, chances are we'll get along. :)

While you're here, I encourage you to check out some of the fantastic art and culture to be found in SF and the Bay Area.

From Martin QUANTIN Oberhausbergen, France Oct 19 Positive Thanks John for hosting me that night in Berkeley, that was fun! John was just moving to his new house in the hills, so I helped him carrying boxes and we had a little house warming party with his friends.
From Adam Gordon San Francisco, United States Sep 14 Positive John is a generous person who is always willing to give time and energy to support his friends. After working with him for a month on a very work intensive project I know him as a valuable team member, a great listener, and a good friend. Also a lot of fun and very sincere. I recommend getting to know him.
From wonderfulwanderlust Edmonton, Canada Mar 18 Positive John is like a juggling, unicycle-riding, computer-geeking ball of vibrance. I'm in awe of how someone can come across as being so serene and down-to-earth, and yet so fervently passionate about life at the same time. He's a wonderful, inspiring character who I'm very glad I got the chance to stay with and get to know a little. I imagine that, regardless of location, time spent with him will always be filled with fun, fire and circus folk, delicious food, great conversation, and a lot of laughs.
From Paul Maheke Saint-Mande, France Mar 3 Positive John was our most peacefull couchsurfing host, a really clever and interesting guy who seems to figure out a lot about human relations. He had 2 nice roomates and 1 lovely cat. Thank you for your patience with our so bad english level :)
From Jacob Libby Ann Arbor, United States Dec 21, 2008 Positive Two days at his place in Berkeley and already about to go out to the same parties. A generous, open-minded, and intelligent fellow for idle talk and philosophy.

From Suny Lou Mafikeng, South Africa Sep 8, 2008 Positive If you haven't surfed with John and slept on his futon, then you dunno what you're missing out on. He's energetic, considerate, thoughtful, and great to spar with. Plus, searching for spots to watch the sunset with him is a MUST!! :p Love you John!!

From Hannah Perner-wilson Inverness, United Kingdom Jul 27, 2008 Positive Because of John my stay in Berkeley was that much more enjoyable. The bed was most comfortable, the cats super cute, his friends were all wonderful, the Balkan music beautiful and I was lucky that he had time to talk. I like his idea of teaching people about small and large systems and am curious to see what might come of it. Thank you John for everything!
From JRBEDFORD Berkeley, United States Jul 15, 2008 Positive John is incredible. Honest, straightforward, caring and incredibly intelligent... makes for a great conversation and a great time.
From RKM Lai Sacramento, United States Jul 13, 2008 Positive John was very responsive to my inquiry to surf his couch / futon, especially as he heard about my mom and her recovering from surgery. He was very friendly, welcoming to ShaiMei and I.
His residence was welcoming. Positive location and easy to find.
However, the futon had problems in the early, early morning that was disruptive to ShaiMei and I. The futon frame was easily fixed in the morning during the light of day.
I enjoyed being at his house. I had fun conversation, juggling experiences, and knowledge and experiences share. I very much reference a: highly recommend.
From RRRENATA San Francisco, United States Jun 2, 2008 Positive john is full of energy, love, care and honesty. he is very playful and enthusiastic, generous and thoughtful. besides being a wonderful friend, john is also a great travel partner and guest - fun to road trip with, to play silly car games with, to share food and responsibilities, to wander through new cities with, to be totally adventurous and open minded, respectful and responsible.

From Betsy Shafer Benton Harbor, United States May 17, 2008 Positive As host John ensures pure comfort and every need met, as a friend his compassion is pure and innocent. John opened his house at the most unpredicted times of the day just so I had a place to rest my bones.

From DiamondinLondon Harrow, United Kingdom May 14, 2008 Positive John is the most gentle person I've ever met, who feels deeply for all and not only wants the world to be a better place but goes out and does something about it. There are numerous incidents I could quote but I was particularly blown away by his consideration when I had just lost most of my clothes at the launderette in Thailand a few days earlier and John phoned me especially to say he was heading that way and would I like to come with him and see if the clothes had turned up.
I was not only lucky enough to get to work with him in Thailand but even luckier to get to know him better outside of the work environment when I got to Melbourne.
From KNULP Genova, Italy Apr 18, 2008 Positive I think john have an uncommon constant state of calmness and an high zen degree. He have also a big heart. He even rescued me when my bicycle has broken in the middle of the street. One big Love to you and all the mates up there

From Джей Shepparton, Australia Apr 2, 2008 Positive John's perspective on life is just amazing. He sees things in situations & people that make my head spin. On another note, my (formerly virgin) kitchen bench will never be the same again! A pleasure to have around, John's travel, technical and life experience makes him easy to talk to, easy to relate to and great to listen to. After watching some Australian "late night" comedy, I can safely say (in true Aussie style) - "Harden the @#$% up, John!" Be sure to host or at least meet John if he's nearby! I really enjoyed staying with John in Berkeley, exploring the area and simply relaxing. John and his housemates are a wealth of information on the local area, where to go & best of all - where to eat!

From Sara Engstrand Copenhagen, Denmark Nov 17, 2007 Positive Though John claims not to know what to see in Berkeley he had more than enough great suggestions and knows a great deal about the area's history. I just stayed with him for one night but we had a great time dancing african dance and looking at the stars from his outdors couch.

From The Jolly Green Giant, Derek Wallace North Hollywood, United States Nov 3, 2007 Positive The warm rays of the sun. A soft cat rubbing against your bare feet. A frosty fruit juice in your hand. A bowl of delicious pumpkin soup in your belly. Great stories, warm smiles, heartfelt laughs. These are the things I see when I close my eyes and think of my time with John.
I found Mr. Lubotsky while trying to meet as many locals as possible before I left the Bay Area and fell in love with him so much that I decided to stay a little longer. Whether it was joining me for a Halloween costume karaoke contest (during which he filmed my rendition of "We Are the World"), helping direct me around town on a day of crazy errands or just being there to talk about anything under the sun, John was the absolute perfect host and new friend to make. I keep saying this about all the people I met in Berkeley, but it really is true - they're the kinds of people I went up there specifically to find. John was no exception.
Actually, I take that back. John is most definitely the exception - he's one in a million. Have fun in Thailand, brother, and I'll see you soon!

From HungrySteve South Lake Tahoe, United States Sep 19, 2007 Positive John is amazing cs host and person. He welcomed me into his home just because our friend Josh was staying there. He invited me into his home for 4 days as casually as most people say hello. He is soft spoken and considerate, knows some great people in the area and is wonderful to know in general. If you appreciate quality humans, meet John. He even took the time to help me learn a couple new juggling moves because he is a circus lover in addition to everything else. John is Quality (yeah, with a capital Q)!
