Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
Couch Available: Maybe Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 3
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: YesWe have a couch in the living room that can fit one person, and any additional surfers can sleep on the floor (I have several extra sleeping bags, mats, lots of bedding etc. That room is completely open (other option is you could sleep on the floor in my bedroom.) ****Note: due to the holidays I can't host between Nov 20-29 and Dec 22-Jan 3****
I just moved to a great new apartment in Manhattan with a good amount of space (note: by Manhattan standards) and easy access to subways. We're in a bustling part of Spanish Harlem (northeast section of Manhattan), 1 block from the #6 line and a 12-minute walk from the Metro North commuter rail.
I live in a 2-br apartment, 3rd floor walkup with a roommate who is also on CS (Lyel Resner) and eager to host people.
I get a lot of requests for accommodations months in advance and this is really tough for me to answer because my work schedule varies or I may want to get out of town for a weekend. I would much rather get requests closer a week or two before so I have a better sense of my schedule. Somewhat last-minute requests sometimes work with me, as do weekdays.
Some tips:
- I would prefer you stay max 2-3 nights because I work really insane hours a lot of the time; longer might work out if I really like you and work isn't too bad. For this reason, I might not be able to acknowledge all requests, but I will try. I do like hanging out with my guests and cooking dinner or going out to show them my neighborhood :)
- If you are a guy traveling solo, you NEED to have couchsurfing experience and some positive references. Sorry, it's just a safety issue...I'd really prefer anyone have CS experience first, but am usually willing to take a chance on you if you have a picture and filled-out profile. If you are traveling in a group and some people are not on couchsurfing, please tell me about them!
- I don't currently have dogs; I just love the picture of my dogs (who are with my parents)! No shedding dogs or smoking, please...I'm quite allergic.
- You can't be at the apartment without me or my roommate since we don't have extra sets of keys. We're up early for work (7 or 8am), but good news is that I work from home 2-3 days per week so you can sleep in then. During weekdays the apt needs to be quiet by midnight so I can sleep :)
- I don't require anything in particular for you to stay with me, but helping me with dishes, offering a few dollars if you use my sheets so I can wash them, cooking a meal, or offering a bottle of wine, etc. are all ways that you can make yourself very welcome :-D
- If your plans change and you're not going to stay with me after I've agreed to host you, please give me a heads-up. Likewise, please confirm that you are definitely coming when I agree to host you (as in, NOT 10pm the night I'm supposed to host you when you first asked weeks ago...this has happened.)
- If you'd like to stay with me, use the "Couchsurf" button and include the word "Sisu" in your request so I know that you've read my profile. I get so many requests that I will read these first and may not get to the other ones. Oh, and if you ask me what Sisu means, you haven't done your homework - Google it; there is a cool history behind it! Friends (171)

Personal DescriptionI'm a management consultant by training, but I recently started working for a small startup called 85 Broads, a global network for professional women. I love networking, and now I get to do it for a living! I spend way too much of my time working, but I'm enjoying learning how to run a business and get to go to a lot of fun events.
Before I started doing this (and couchsurfing took over my life) I studied geography, public policy and German at Dartmouth, followed by the Turkish language and classes related to immigration and multicultural education at the University of Hamburg on a Fulbright Grant in 2005-6. Then, I worked at a management consulting firm for 2.5 years. I'm hoping to get an MA in international affairs (possibly combined with an MBA) in a few years.
I'm a Jersey girl (proud of it!) and have many wonderful memories of growing up here, hanging out with friends, playing music and sports, going to movies, diner-hopping, you name it. I moved back to my hometown as an adult for a couple of years, which was great.
As a good friend told me, "as a power feminist you do wear an awful lot of pink..." I also really dig pearls and and have a penchant for accessorizing.
I'm a Christian, and my faith is central to my life. How I Participate in CSI host as much as I can now that I live in the city, and plan events in NYC on a regular basis. I manage the official Twitter feed for the CouchCrash festival (check it out: http://twitter.com/CouchcrashNYC)!CouchSurfing Experience

This doesn't include many of the old friends or relatives I've stayed with or hosted outside of the site! In addition to surfing, I'm very involved in NYC social events. I've often met up to show people around my city and always try to share my wisdom with travelers who have questions. I haven't gotten to travel as much as I'd like to recently (although I cross state borders at least 3 times a week), but I'm hoping to remedy that soon :)InterestsTraveling, dancing, hiking, skiing, modern art, sipping tea, going out with friends, late-night conversations, learning new languages, attending conferences, the theater, movies, writing in fancy journals, free stuff...and just wandering for hours. Nature is awe-inspiring.
My first goal is to make it to all 50 states in the U.S. - I'm currently at 37. Then, I want to go back and try wine from every state - so far I've been to wineries in about 13 :)PhilosophyMake every day a masterpiece.
The only things in life that I regret are the things I didn't do (which usually means I try to do everything, but I wouldn't change that either for the opportunities I've had and people I've met.) Come to think of it, though, I don't have regrets...not worth it!Music, Movies, BooksI love music and have played the viola and violin for many years (as well as dabbled in a little singing and dancing.)
I watch a lot of foreign films, and a few favorites include: the Red Violin, Goodbye Lenin!, Life is Beautiful, Kristin Lavransdatter, Il Postino, Så som i himmelen, Bin-Jip, Luther, Monsoon Wedding, Siddhartha, Happenstances, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Factotum, Elling, The Lives of Others, C.R.A.Z.Y., Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Udon, and The Namesake.
As for books, I recommend "Ceremony" by Leslie Marmon Silko, "Refuge" by Terry Tempest Williams, "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Andrew Golden, "Empress Orchid" by Anchee Min, "Falling Leaves" by Adeline Yen Mah, "CEO of the Sofa" by P.J. O'Rourke, "Jubilee" by Margaret Walker, and anything by Hermann Hesse.
Although it's not included here, I could spend many days on end exploring art museums; I find modern art particularly thought-provoking, and I have found works from all time periods that really inspire me.Types of People I enjoyI love intellectual conversations and meeting people who are doing really exciting things with their lives, simply pursuing what they are passionate about, or still discovering what that means. I generally like to go out and have fun and get to know people from around the world; I often learn the most from my friends of different backgrounds.Teach, Learn, ShareI organize sweet events. I like talking about policy and the different industries I've worked in as a consultant, and can give a good tour of an art museum or an introduction to wine. I've lived in seven U.S. states and Germany twice and love talking about my travels and all the places I want to go. I want to learn more languages and how to cook some new cuisines. I've helped a number of people get plugged into community and want to keep serving others as best I can.One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneAs an eight-year-old, I came face-to-face with two moose by a trout pond when I was visiting relatives in Wyoming...oops! I've also gone ziplining and seen lots of rare birds in remote parts of Costa Rica. I've eaten pretty bizarre foods (some thanks to CSers) such as live termites. Some of the most profound experiences I have had are during mission trips to developing countries (Honduras, Mexico) or materially impoverished parts of the U.S. (upstate New York, Caribbean migrant communities in Miami), where many of the people I have worked with have shown incredible gratitude, faith, and love for each other in the face of adversity.Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org ProjectCouchsurfing is one of those things where the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it, and it has the potential to change your life. Because of the transient nature of couchsurfing, you will face the inevitable downside that you have to say goodbye nearly as often as you say hello, but you will find that the world is smaller than you think and goodbye does not have to be forever.
I've really enjoyed getting to know my guests and hosts and gaining insider perspectives on the cities I've been to. Getting a group of strangers laughing and connecting with each other brings me immense joy. Participate not for what it saves you in hostel costs, but with the objective of making new friends and broadening your horizons.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Honduras, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican LIVED: Germany, United States WANTS TO GO: Argentina, Australia, Chile, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey IS GOING TO: Canada References

From LAURA Seattle, United States Mar 17, 2008 Positive Sitting at the same restaurant table in a CS group event (that she, despite being from out of town, set up!) just wasn't enough "Krista exposure" for me--between excellent teas and 20 or more "Wow!" cheeses to accompany my black grapes, we were well on our way to a foodgasm... A bit more shopping together and we were ready to take over the whole house for our own inspired dinner for 7... several hours later in the evening, hot tubs, hot conversation topics, hot soup, and non- hot fish were shared. She even braved icky asparagus!! Pretty much any time she's not bound to her computer for work, you can safely bet Krista is having a good time and making great conversation. She's just awesome! I'll definitely be seeking her out if she and I are having extended travels in the same region again.
