Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
Couch Available: Yes Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 3
Shared Sleeping Surface: Depends Shared Room: DependsThe only time you will share a sleeping surface is if there are multiple of you and that would only be with each other. As for a room, it is much the same.
I have an OK couch (may be short for tall folks), a love seat (definitely short) and a recliner (does not lay flat but is still very comfortable) in the living room which is open/a common area. I also can offer a small bedroom that is private but only has a carpeted floor. I can probably find an air-mattress but don't count on it. I'm busy figuring out the grad school thing, trying to find my way and getting settled. So my schedule varies.
I have a flatmate who is cool with hosting. I say yes I have a couch, and want to host, but things still need to be checked with him. He's a good guy and I'd vouch him if he were on the site.
Sleep/bed times vary, smokers can go out on the porch, public transit (bus) isn't bad and is a block away, I have blankets towels etc, and count on 2-3 days max (though more might work).
Give me a shout and we can hang and maybe explore the city together. I've already found a few cool spots. have fun!

Personal DescriptionI am attempting to get my master's degree. I just started and, well, hmmm...
I tend to think of things in relation to other things. One thing reminds me of another that reminds me of another, so if I start laughing for no apparent reason, it would probably take too long to 'splain. I could but, no, there is too much. I will sum up.
I think I'm confused a lot of the time, though probably not as confused as I think I might be, but more confused than I think other people think I am.
I like spring training more than the post season, and the winter solstice more than the summer solstice. The later are more interesting and exciting, but the former conveys so much anticipation of the unknown!
I have a younger brother who is a whitewater guide on the New and Gauley Rivers in West Virginia. I also have parents. CouchSurfing ExperienceI've hosted friends, family and CSers.
I've surfed with friends, friends of friends, parents of friends and step parents of friends, with or without them. Also a godson of a husband of my mothers friend and parents of a guy my dad worked with. weird hu? I have surfed a bit through the US, Canada and some of Europe.
Pittsburgh Weekenders '08 '09.Interests
I love books, movies, music, baseball and other sports, the outdoors and the environment, climbing, camping, hiking, trying to golf, music, biking, taking the occasional photograph, driving and traveling, food, tech stuff (computers, electronics etc.), good conversation, and just hanging out. I just built a mountain bike. Mostly with parts off of my brothers old bike.
I like beer. Some of my current favorites are Bell's Hopslam, anything by Great Lakes Brewery, Stone Brewery, Rogue Brewery or Dogfish Head Brewery. I also really enjoy the Trappist beers. When I actually have equipment I will have a picobrewery (aka homebrew) because micro- is too big ( SI Prefix). Until then I will just use other people's stuff. I've helped others brew several times.
I like food too. I will eat most anything as long as it tastes good. I really like spicy dishes. I like everything from vegan smoothies to steak, to sushi etc.
I'm kind of a news/politics junkie. The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, The Economist, and Public Radio are my current means of information. I also check out the Techdirt, Slashdot, Wall Street Journal, NY Times and Washington Post online. I don't think that I fit a political generality though. OK, progressive maybe, whatever.
PhilosophyBeds are dangerous. A lot of people die in bed. Maybe stay on the couch. (Partially stolen from Tim in Vegas)
The drive is often more important and interesting than the destination.
This only applies I think to major decisions but here it goes. Don't say you 'want' to do something. If it is important enough to 'want' then it is important enough to 'do'. Say I 'will' do such-and-such. Then make it happen. Also, don't feel bad because you have a list of things that you 'will' do later but aren't getting to now, as long as you realize that what you are currently doing is more important and makes you happier. If that isn't the case, change it.
For the more minor things, Perfect is good, but done is better. - I know, I know, easier said than done. For me as well.
I'd rather be a tree-huger than a mountain-fu*ker (credit to my brother). This is the mountaintop removal bit.Music, Movies, Books
I generally go for Humor, Sci-fi, some fantasy, some documentary/nonfiction and Classics.
-Books: All Douglas Adams, all Hemingway and now most all of Jasper Fforde. "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is absolutely brilliant. A lot of Terry Pratchett's "Disc World" books are great. George Orwell (1984) is scary because it could be true, along with Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451). Frank Herbert's "Dune" series is great. Mark Twain is cool, so is J.D. Salinger. I enjoyed Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series. Really liked "Atlas Shrugged" but I probably didn't get as much out of it as I should have.
My main music is Rock, Alternative, Punk, Ska, Bluegrass/Folk, and Jazz music, but I'm open to about anything.
-Music: I like Catch-22, MEST, Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, Buck-O-Nine, Zebrahead, Yonder Mountain String Band, Louis Armstrong etc., Here's to the Long Haul, Flight Of The Conchords, Richard Cheese, Dropkick Murphy, Hendrix, Cake, TMBG, Nirvana, TV on the Radio, Ceann, Jazzam and more.
I don't own a TV, but movies are awesome. My taste is a bit eclectic, but most of it is rather light and funny. There are exceptions of course, but I have to be in the right mood.
-TV shows: I like Wonderfalls, Firefly, MASH, Dexter, The IT Crowd, Futurama, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and more.
-Movies: I like Clue, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Grosse Pointe Blank, O'Brother Where Art Thou, Blazing Saddles, Two Mules For Sister Sarah, Kellys Heros, Office Space, Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, Kung Fu Hustle, Amelie, Eddie Izzard Dress To Kill, North by Northwest, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Fifth Element, Supertroopers, Arsenic and Old Lace, Shaun of the Dead and lots more. -People should see 'Songcatcher' if they have any interest in bluegrass or folk or Celtic music etc. It does a decent job of describing some of the heritage in Appalachia. (Where I'm from, sorta)
Types of People I enjoyPeople with maybe a sideways, not necessarily twisted, sense of humor. Those who don't take things too seriously, who can laugh at crappy situations as well as awesome ones. People who can have a discussion, debate or argument without yelling.
I think I get along with most everyone. That said, sometimes I think I'm getting along with people, and I find out later that they thought I was being a jerk. I try though, I really do :/Teach, Learn, Share
I could probably teach someone how to drive a standard shift car, do a reasonable job of describing Mountain Top Removal type coal mining in Appalachia and explain a bit of how beer is made. I am sometimes full of other useless info, but it doesn't come out on demand.
I will listen to about anything people want to tell or teach me. There are a few things that I've started but have had varying levels of success. Base guitar, French, chess...
Other things I think people should know or at least be aware of:
"Anything that happens, happens. Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn't necessarily do it in chronological order, though." Douglas Adams
"million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10" Terry Pratchett
You are never as good as you look when things are going well, but you are never as bad as you look when things are going poorly. -general baseball knowledge
- I guess this is just statistics at work you know, regression to the mean.
One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneI tried to explain gravity to a five-year-old. 'The Earth is really big, you're small. When you jump up, the Earth pulls you back down.' I think he got it.
I watched a guy busking (street performer etc.) with a piano. Now think about that. He has to push that around from place to place and keep it in tune. He was pretty darn good though, and even had a sponsor.
An Irish pub, owned and run by an Asian man and his family, in Vienna Austria. I thought that was cool.

From Tim Shell Las Vegas, United States Mar 23 Positive Jacob was an excellent guest and we had a great time hanging out with some of the other Vegas couchsurfers. He's relaxed and easy-going and friendly and funny. If you only like boring, uptight couchsurfers, then don't host him. Otherwise, I'd recommend him to any host.

From NAYBURMUM Lincoln, United States Mar 11 Positive Jacob was a fun guest and everyone in the family enjoyed hanging with and talking to him. The hackey sack lesson was especially enjoyed by the kids! He's the perfect surfer because he knows how to entertain himself, but he fits in easily with the group when we were able to do things together. If we're ever in WV we'll definitely look him up.
From Laurie Pickard Esteli, Nicaragua Mar 5 Positive Jacob was very hospitable. He took me and my traveling companion out for dinner and drinks. I'm sure he would have showed us more of Charleston if we hadn't been completely wiped out from driving all day. Thanks, Jacob!
From Kelly Moon Los Angeles, United States Mar 5 Positive jacob! i instantly took a shine to this bearded bundle of energy! he is very knowledgeable about his city (among many other things) super fun and down to earth and just an all around pleasant guy. one day he introduced me to one of charleston's hidden activities- mall drinking (ask him about it!) where we spent equal amounts of time being goofy and getting deep into conversation. he has probably the 2nd best laugh i've ever heard and definitely the most infectious! and if you enjoy reading he has excellent taste in books and can hook you up with some great recommendations.

From Neil and Stephanie Kocalis Elkins, United States Feb 26 Positive Who knew that 42 was the answer to life, the universe, and everything? We spent one enjoyable night and following afternoon with Jacob in his sweet apartment in Charleston. The conversation flowed freely as did the delicious brews. If you're a fan of road tripping, you'll have a lot to talk about with Jacob (23,000 miles in one trip?!). He's an easy going, accommodating, and personable guy. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him again before we leave W.V. Thanks Jacob for being a fantastic host. This is "Ze end of ze reference"!
From Ken Flannery Astoria, United States Feb 7 Positive Surfing at Jacob's place was a great time. He knows a lot about beers and music and has a great attitude about life. From Heather Sprouse Huntington, United States Jan 12 Positive Jacob was a great person to meet and a wonderful host at the potluck he pulled together at his house. We quickly realized we were both interested in home brew, and the next day he drove to Huntington to help us get our first batch started. He's an interesting guy and has a lot of stories to tell about his life adventures. His place is also really close to downtown and the Capitol, I feel like he could really show someone the Charleston experience.

Jacob had great ideas of what to do and see in Charleston.. which was much appreciated since we hadn't plans.
From Derek LaBrie Providence, United States Dec 31, 2008 Positive If you are going to Charleston, meet up with Jacob! He was an awesome host. He knows good beer and all the good spots to get it in town. He gave us a great tour of the city and took us hiking in the beautiful WV mountains. After being in the car with him, I now know what it must be like to be in a race car. Jacob was very accommodating and his apartment is a mansion. He is genuine and someone I give much respect. Thanks again! Peace!

From Luke Coryea Pittsburgh, United States Oct 7, 2008 Positive Jacob is a lot of fun to hang out with, not least because he brings amazing pizza with him and enjoys good beer. I think we both had fun quoting a bit too much Monty Python and Eddie Izzard, but then it's really necessary with them. Oh, and loves Praha and went there for a while, which makes him even more awesome than before.
From Joe Kangiser Pittsburgh, United States Oct 7, 2008 Positive We met at the Brillobox and had a good conversation. Unfortunately we never finished that conversation. I hope to finish our conversation.
From Lindsay Reed Pittsburgh, United States Oct 7, 2008 Positive i got to talk to jacob quite a bit during the pittsburgh weekender - he's a totally nice guy, he laughs at my jokes (which i like), and he let me bully him in to dancing for like five whole minutes. what a good sport!
From Ben Salatin Pittsburgh, United States Oct 6, 2008 Positive I met Jacob during the Pittsburgh 08 Weekender. Great guy! From Vala and Þórgnýr Thoroddsen Reykjavik, Iceland May 27, 2008 Positive Jacob is a neat guy that asks a lot of silly questions that really aren't silly when you think about it, but stuff that you haven't really thought of because it's too close to you... does this make any sense? Anyway, he's a great guy to hang out with and talk about whatever. There are no awkward silences there :P

My whole family enjoyed the time we spent with him. Jacob is welcomed in our home anytime. When he shows up to see a baseball game in your city, be sure to let him stay with you.
From Victoria Bevolden Napa, United States Aug 27, 2007 Positive He stayed with me for a few days. We went to a baseball game, then went on a quest for the ultimate pink drink. He's engaging, interesting, and really a lot of fun. I'd definitely let him stay with me again.

From THEMARKET Toronto, Canada Jul 25, 2007 Positive We hosted Jacob after he stayed with Garry C. I don't know what kind of late night partying went on, but when Jacob got to our place he slept for more than 10 hours. He was even able to stay asleep while construction workers pounded away on the walls and began removing the roof right above the room where he stayed. A nice guy and a marathon sleeper!
From BATMAN Whistler, Canada Jul 24, 2007 Positive I hosted Jacob for a night on his continental baseball, homesearch fact finding mission! It was an all-carbs weekend-Chinese food,beer-lots of it, breakfast burritos for dinner and, of course, the chocolate smoothie for breakfast! We talked about important environmental issues-over beers at Sneaky Dees! It was loads of fun hosting Jacob and showing him new tricks with his digicam! Hope to meet him again soon! Jacob: come back anytime and I'll take you somewhere else other than Sneaky Dees! haha!
From Franklin Coleman Bayonne, United States Jun 16, 2007 Positive Jacob has a wonderful wealth of interests, and we had some truly fascinating conversations during his stay. From A.K. Mashhoon Atlanta, United States Jun 5, 2007 Positive Jacob is awesome. He's a fun guy to hang out with and he's up for anything. He knows good beer, good music and baseball. Stayin' out 'til 3am on a Monday is highly encouraged as well!
From HELIOS_71 Quebec, Canada May 25, 2007 Positive Quebec City was the first major canadian stop for Jacob's road trip. Even if it was his first experience on Couchsurfing, he just came in my flat with confidence and cheerfullness. From the beginning, I felt that he was a honest and down-to-earth guy and I was more than happy to welcome him. After discussing some aspects of beer-o-mania, I invited him to meet some of my buddies in a BBQ party. Always keeping up his smile, he even tried to answer the skeptical political questions of a Muslim friend and participated in some fuzzy half-french/half-english conversations. If he ever request a couch at your place, be sure to greet him cordially; you'll be redeemed with his heartfelt laughter. |
