Couch picture

Couch Available: Yes
Preferred Gender: Any
Max Surfers Per Night: 2

Shared Sleeping Surface: No
Shared Room: Depends

Our home is what is known as "open plan". It means that there are no walls or separate rooms on each floor, except for the bath and toilet. The sleeping loft for our surfers is located on a level above where my wife and I sleep. There are two large shutters to close off the space from bright light (early morning sun is powerful) and to provide privacy. The shutters can be opened for a full view of the house below and plenty of natural sunlight.

It's a REAL BED in a loft at the top of our house! My wife and I can offer a very comfy bed that is suspended from the ceiling in a converted storehouse in centre city Philadelphia. The loft is reached by a steep but very sturdy ladder (like that on a ship). If you are not fit, have a mobility issue, or have a problem with going up and down steep ladders, this is not the place for you! Our home is next to the historic area and convenient to art galleries, museums, cafes, restaurants, shopping, movies, outdoor markets, and historic sights. There is always something to do every day and evening. We live in a small but very cozy place, filled with warm wood and Oriental rugs. The house is an open plan space, so if you are shy or require a huge amount of privacy, you will not like it here. The walls of the loft are upholstered fabric panels for that sexy, intimate "bordello" feel.

We have sheets, blankets, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and towels. Just bring a smile and positive attitude!

We do not smoke, but you can do so in our courtyard outside. We have no pets at present, having lost a beloved cat not long ago.

Public transport is available around the corner. We also have local and regional trains within one mile of our house. Two subway lines are available within a ten minute walk. Main train station is two miles away, main bus station is one mile away. International airport is four miles away.

Bring your own laptop! I cannot provide you with internet access on my computers. However, you may be able to grab unsecured wireless signals from my neighbours and there is an internet cafe around the corner.

We both have nine to five jobs, so we are asleep by 11 to 12 midnight Monday to Thursdays. We are available to host all days, but we have the most time in the evenings and week-ends. If we have the time, (most of the time we do...) we will be pleased to show you around and always will advise you on where to go, and how to get around.

I require a minimum of five days notice for a Surf Request from first timers, so if you can't plan well you are not going to be successful.

If there is an emergency situation and you are stranded by weather, another host, or travel delays, I will try to help you but can make no promises! You should also try the Philadelphia Group and Last Minute Couches sub group on the Phila Group page.

PLEASE NOTE:
I *PREFER* NOT TO HOST FOR A SINGLE NIGHT unless we know each other from a previous surfing experience or through a trusted friend in common. HOWEVER, if you are in a tight spot and need a place to stay, My wife and I will certainly consider your request, so don't just run away. It's a lot of bother to change and launder sheets and re-make a bed for a single night. In addition, we really like to be able to spend some quality time together sharing conversation, shopping, cooking, etc.

*We do not host pets or children*

*I ONLY HOST MEMBERS OF COUCHSURFING*. If you are traveling with a friend, they must also be a member and have a complete profile. You must provide a link to their profile in your "request to surf" in order to be considered.

*YOU MUST BE OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE TO SURF.*
I have had underage surfers show up at my doorstep. If I *think* you look under 18, I insist that you show me your passport/travel documents and prove that you meet the requirements to join and surf with CS. If you would prefer not to do this, do us both a big favour and do not request surfing & my hospitality. "Rules is rules".

As Benjamin Franklin once said: "Fish and visitors stink after three days". Longer stays might be possible after a first stay with us and we are not preoccupied with other social or business commitments.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL PROFILE on your CS page. If you do not care enough to take the time to tell the CS community about yourself, why would we want to open our home to you? It is essential that we have a sense of who you are: your interests, thoughts, ideas, life, and travel experiences that make you who you are.

Personal Description

Dedicated motorcyclist that has never owned an automobile. I enjoy traveling and meeting the world on their own turf, making friends, hanging out, and enjoying life. I also love to show visitors my city and to provide hospitality. My wife and I love to cook and entertain. We enjoy good food, conversation, fancy dress parties, wine, beer, cocktails, walking, art, design, architecture, reading, music, computers, digital imaging/photography.

I am a text book Sagittarian, so be warned. I am a "straight-up", "what you see is what you get" person, with no pretenses. I don't care for Bullshit. Plain talk and clear communication straight from the heart is what works for me, and that's how I am going to deal with you. I am a very open and forthright person. I don't like mind games or secrets. I'd like you to share exactly how you feel about anything that is important to you. I may not be in agreement with your beliefs, but I will always listen and consider what you have to say. I think it is important to be tolerant of others and their beliefs. It's a big world filled with lots of different ideas. Respect and consideration for others, their lifestyles and homes is important.

I'm one of the older members here. That doesn't mean that I am brain dead, am out of touch with popular culture and music, forgot to have fun, or don't know what's going on in my city, in the world, or with many of you younger folks. To the contrary, I have the benefit of decades of travel, education, taste, "life experience", and personal connexions that has provided a deep appreciation of life and all it offers.

I welcome you to my city, neighbourhood, and home, and can't wait to hear about your life, travels, and to share your life experiences!

Hospitality and friendship have nothing to do with how old you are. If you think I am a dirty old man looking for a "date" or a girlfriend, or have issues with older people that might be the age of your parents (or possibly your grandparents), just keep on moving....it's your hang up, not mine. It's what's in your heart and soul that counts!

How I Participate in CS

I'm here to provide good advice, fun times, and a safe place for my guests and other visitors to the city. To show you Philadelphia from the perspective of a native born resident.
As an Ambassador for the USA, I arrange meetings, welcome new members to CS, advise and guide visiting CSer's, and continue to host guests.
I also am participating in setting up, managing, and expanding "Couchsurfing Zones" in Philadelphia and throughout the world.

CouchSurfing Experience

My wife and I have always welcomed guests from here and abroad into our home. CouchSurfing is just an extension of this philosophy and way of life. The experience has been good to excellent. My wife and I look forward to meeting more CSer's throughout the year.

Interests

Motorcycles. I love the smell and feel of the air, (and the danger and the speed). You are connected to your surroundings that no automobile can offer.
Cooking, Dancing, Cocktails, Champagne, great Beer, Malt Whisky, Chocolate, Travel, Books, Restaurants & Cafes, Walking, Listening and Making Music, Reading, Movies, Thrift stores, Vintage Clothes, Sewing, being active, enjoying life, story telling.
I'm into computers, especially digital imaging, graphics and CAD. Learning web design and HTML.

Philosophy

Good and bad people come from everywhere, all cultures, and every belief. I'm only interested in meeting the good people!
I love being creative and constructive every day. I own my own business (in the arts) and work hard, but never have forgotten that there is more to life than work and money. People and my social connexions and "contracts" are very important to me.
I'm interested in building bridges, not walls.
Age is a number. We don't pick when we are born.
An open heart, honesty, and a kind soul are what appeals to me most.

Music, Movies, Books

I love Japanese samurai and European flicks. Action, drama, history, fantasy and romance, it doesn't matter. I love to read US and world history and a novel or two every now-and then. I read many design and architectural magazines and technically oriented books about materials and techniques.
Jazz, Rock, Electronica, R&B/Soul/Funk.

Types of People I enjoy

My wife and I prefer extroverted, warm, outgoing, honest, organised, clean, expressive people that can speak from the heart. Neither of us want to work hard to learn about people's lives. We are interested in YOUR STORIES and what you have to share with us. We relate best to people that are open, active, inquisitive, and sharing. We want to be able to hear about people's life stories, experiences, and recollections.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: Cooking, baking, decorative painting, mouldmaking/casting, digital imaging/editing, computer graphics, basic sewing skills.
Share: Shopping at thrift, vintage, and second-hand stores, cooking, stories about your life, family, friends, and travels, cocktails, dancing, music, introductions to friends, digital imaging/editing, computer graphics.

One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done

I have been to war. It's awesome, terrifying, and evil.
I have been shot, been in two collisions at sea, and a major motorcycle accident that should have killed me.
I have designed and built a few beautiful restaurants.
The best was helping to build a mosque and designing and building several non-denominational chapels on aircraft carriers for the US Navy.

Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org Project

You guys have the big picture are know what you want to do with the CS concept, but lack organisation and follow-through. I certainly like the vibe here, but I'm not impressed with the lack of clear and timely communication with the people in charge of their respective areas. Mellow is cool, but unresponsive is not!

Writing about Howard and Celeste in less then 1000 characters is quiet an impossible job. There are so many great things about this wonderful couple. Their almost legendary hospitality, their love for all the good things in life, their positive energy towards everybody and everythings was a pleasure to experience.
We've had a great time in Philadelphia and in the little "couchsurfing loft". A couple of weeks later we met up again in Brughes and had a blast again and I'm sure next time we'll meet will be wonderful again!

Howard is the Philadelphia and he has a BIG heart! He made me love this city, as he showed me around (BIG TIME!), shared amazing stories, feed me in the most fantastic places and was as generous as one person possibly could be. He and Celeste are the best - thoughtful, caring and friendly and you have to have a good imagination to imagine their KINDNESS - this is indescribable.

He was my last minute host, though I didn't want it to turn out like that,
but it turned out like that and Howard was still there to help me out and
offer me a wonderful week in his small yet ever so cozy home. You have to
see the loft!!!

Philadelphia has a very special warm place deep inside of my heart thanks to Howard, as he was more than you could think off. With all due respect to my dad, Howard is the dad I never had.

I am deeply grateful.

Aaaah finally! After two years when our plans didn't work out, I finally met Howard and his lovely wife Celeste, during their stay in Brugge. It's wonderful to hear them talk in such great words about "my" town, and they can be called "part-time Bruggelingen" I think! Conversations with Howard make your night a special one, he's fun, caring, smart and an artist! Can't wait to see him again, in the US or back here!

Howard and Celeste were fantastic hosts, very straightforward, generous and caring. They opened their home for us, fed us great food, shared stories, gave tips for Philadelphia and were just fabulous all over. Philadelphia was one of my favourite places of our trip - probably also due to popcorn and lime chips with cosmopolitans and appletinis ;)

The days with Howard and his wife were absolutely great! Philadelphia will always be connected to this guy in my memories for he added his special flavor to our stay making me love "his" city as well.
Howard has a healthily relaxed view on life and an eye free of unhealthy prejudice for the people around him. It was a pleasure meeting him and his wife sharing stories and wonderful food. If you want to learn about the special places of Philly he's the man! Thank you for everything!
His couch is actually a very comfortable bed.

Mac is the guy you want to know if you're going to Philadelphia. The kind of guy that knows it all about the city because he has lived there at 1000% for the past thirdy years or so. He'll tell you where to eat the famous Philly steakhouse and where not going to eat (tourist traps).
For all of these reason, Mac has made my stay in Philly a very enjoyable one.
He's also a very generous person that want everyone to be happy and confortable with themselves.
Thanks Mac and I'll hope I'll be able to see you again.

Howard is just the most adorable man I ever met.
He opens his heart to you, and will always make you feel very compfortable.
He invited me to dinner a lot of times, he bought me clothes that I need, he gave me a lot of tips about life, love, friendships.
He had a lot of knowledge, he saw a lot of things, and he will always helped you, and speak with you if you need to.
I loved all the stories he told me, he is also really funny, and like me he love bad words!!
He is not at all an old rusty man.
He is an artist and an excellent gilter.

I'm hurry to spend ThanksGiving with you & Celeste !!

I stayed 4 nights at Howard and Celeste' s place. I arrived on a friday evening without any luggage and Howard directly took me out for shopping ;-) They took me out for diners and lunch at really cosy places. Howard is a storyteller and he showed me some nice parts of the city with the historical references. I really enjoy my time at their place.

Howard was the first person who welcomed me at the cs-site. What a surprise! He gave me a very warm welcome and an invitation to meet him and his wife Celeste when they would be in Brugge.. And sure, we met each other!

They invited me for dinner.. it was a very lovely evening! Howard and Celeste are very friendly and open-minded persons who immediately made myself comfortable. Howard is talkative and likes to share his knowledge; Celeste is more modest but I loved her! Thank you both for the wonderful (loooong) evening!

I'm sure when you are looking for a couch in Philadelphia, they are your best choice!

After trying to meet Howard and Celeste for one year, I finally succeeded to go beyond the waiting list and meet them in the real world :-P. I can assure you now: they do exist!

They invited me for an exquisite dinner, though I still have my doubts about the black feet ;)

We had non-stop conversations between beerology and gastronomic delights.

Howard and Celeste know how to live the local life, even better, they *are* locals in multiple places and I learned a lot about my own city from their gastronomic experience.

One more thing.

Howard sure knows how to sell his city. When I'm going to New York one day, I definitely have to combine it with a visit in Philadelphia.

UPDATE: after carefully blending my impression of meeting Howard, I now like to call him the Nokia-man, because he's truly connecting people!

Howard and Celeste were great hosts. I enjoy to meet people out of the traditional way to live, to behave... So it was perfect ! Howard spent lots of time with me walking in the streets and explaining everything about his city. I love the area where they live (very vivid and with many artists). I enjoyed also to spent one morning in his atelier where he introduced me his work. He is just a very lively, generous and epicurean person and it was really worth to meet him. I really hope to see them again... As well as Philadelphia.
By the way, the "crappy" bed was wonderful !

Howard is like the loud, funny, teasing uncle you look forward to as you main source of entertainment at a boring family gathering. Celeste is quieter and more mild mannered. Both are great hosts and I definitely enjoyed my stay. They took me to a fantastic Indian restaurant which was like heaven to me because I was craving some Indian after nearly 3 months in Europe, the last month being in Italy. Oh, and the bed is super comfy :) Howard knows his city very well, so he's a very informative guide. If I'm ever back in Philly, I will definitely being staying with them again!

Howard is a wonderful person and a great tour guide. He showed me around Philadelphia and pointed ou all the important sights. He took me for coffee and hooked me up with a bottle of wine when I was shut out from the liquor store. He is very kind and generous and I hope our paths cross again soon.

Howard invited us over for cocktails which then turned into dinner then an invitation for thanksgiving dinner. Such a lively and giving person who is a pleasure to talk to. He was also so helpful when we were looking for somewhere to stay. Howard just has a love and a knack for helping and looking out for people. His heart is only just surpassed in size by his liquor cabinet

I've been thinking about what to write for a bit but i can't think of anything particular clever to say, so i'll keep it simple; Howard showed met the insider's guide to the lovely city of Philadelphia. He welcomed me as if i were family, and was kinder than i could could imagine anyone to be when meeting them for the first time.

Of course, Howard is wondeful host, Celeste and he took so much good care of Vince & I when we were in Philly. I really do keep lovely memories of my time there about walks in the rain, good food & shopping !

All you have to know before meeting him, is maybe to have several energy drinks before!

Howard warmly welcome me when I reach Philly with two hours of delay because of the snow. He knows Philadelphia by heart, he shown me around the places to see, and to try (ice cream in Reading Terminal Market ;-)). History, culture, he shared with me these rich backgrounds of the city and also his personnal loves (art, wine and food).
Howard is very friendly, so dynamic, he just love so much life and share his city and hobbies with the people.
I really feel confortable hanging around with him, even if some people can find that we have a big years of difference but I felt like I was one of his niece. I wish I will see him and Celeste again in Europe :-)

But he also is very confident, flexible and really enjoys time with people. Was pleased to be able to meet him twice for many hours and see some of his historical and artistic work.

Met with Howard about 5 times now, so he is certainly good company

I had the lucky opportunity to meet up with Howard and Celeste. Two people who live life in its best way, bourgondic, good sense of humor and open to the world and people around them. It is no more than a logical consequence that they are part of this big family called couchsurfing. Wonderful to see people like them who go far behind the concept of tourism. Once they are in the “Jordaan”, they simply become part of it, live it instead of the standard tourist stuff, and try to find out about all ins and outs of local life. Openminded people with a big heart!

He's been our first host that took care of us as much as he did: hosted in a private little castle of theirs (my own feeling), tour guided all over the city (more relevant and accurate than any payful one) unfortunately under the rain, and taken to eat in the most delicious places of his town (also including his nice cooking). In a word, I will difficultly forget this stay. See you soon in Europe!!!

I did and I realized that two nights enough is no way near enough for that city. Howard is a very good host and he knows a lot about the place and can give you recommendations on what to do, I also found the city very tourist friendly!
