Couch Available: Yes
Preferred Gender: Any
Max Surfers Per Night: 4

Shared Sleeping Surface: No
Shared Room: Depends

Any guests are welcome to sleep whereever they are most comfortable. Options include: floor space for your travel pad, pullout mattresses on the floor, the backyard for a tent, or the porch. We have many sleeping bags and blankets if guests come without. If privacy is an issue - you get my room and I'll gladly take the living room floor.

Madison is a gem of a city and I would be happy to welcome any interesting and interested guests and show them why I love this city! I live with two other people, both fascinating and welcoming, smack in middle of the downtown area - a 20 minute walk to the university and a two minute stroll to both Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. My time at home is generally spent in the kitchen, cooking, brewing, chatting with company over tea or a beer - any kitchen loving guests will feel at home!

Personal Description

I'm in love with life and content with most everything. This is easy seeing how I am naturally surrounded by kind and inspiring people. Sharing and preparing food with a pleasant company of friends or strangers is one of the most important aspects of life. I brew beer and drink mircobrews, but I don't tolerate drunkeness as a way of life. I wouldn't survive without TEA and other hot beverages. Travel is a main source of inspiration in my life, from backyard camping to climbing mountains or exploring markets in Asia. I'm easily humored yet I'm quite serious and I may be more contradictory than I like to think. and most importantly:
I am a valid human being.
I post occasional writings at madiiax.livejournal.com and photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/12890068@N08/

Interests

Traveling, hitchhiking, walking, camping and couchsurfing my way across the World. Exploring natural and urban landscapes. Observation. Weather. Plants. Fungus. Microbes. Fermentation. Conversation. Motivation. Inspiration. Sharing, preparing and enjoying food. Establishing positive conversations and relationships with a random stranger. Hosting. St Petersburg, Russia and the USSR. Asia and Africa. Geography. Visiting countries not recognized by the UN. Books. Embracing the contradictions! LIFE!

Philosophy

"We are the facilitators of our own creative evolution." -Bill Hicks . . .

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law
Love is the Law Love under will"

Music, Movies, Books

MUSIC: the Melvins, АукцЫон, King Crimson, Reverend Glasseye and his Wooden Legs, Neurosis, Звуки Му, Can, Les Claypool, Сейгей Курёхин, Я и мой друг грузовик, Huun-huur Tu, Einstuerzende Neubauten and any folk music from Badakhshani to Pygmy.
BOOKS: Field Guides. Мы (We) by Zamyatin, The Dispossessed, 1984, Мастер и Маргарита, Tao Te Ching, Moby Dick, Don Quixote, the works of Epictetus, Nothing In This Book Is True But It's Exactly How Things Are, The Tibetian Book Of The Dead, The Book Of The Law. Poetry by DH Lawrence, Rumi, Pushkin, William Blake. Anything inspiring or fascinating.
MOVIES: Artistic movies, such as Baraka, interest me, but in general I'm more interested in life.

Types of People I enjoy

Valid human beings.

Teach, Learn, Share

RECIPE:
-one pomegranate - the kernels cleaned and tossed in a dish
-two large bananas, or four microbananas, chopped up
-cashews or peanuts or both - a handful, especially good when salted
This is the perfect food. Pomegranate is sour and juicy, the nuts salty and crunchy, and the banana is sweet and soft. Mmmm - the perfect trinity of taste and texture.

One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done

These things are best shared through conversation and photos.

What a fine host! I felt very comfortable staying with Brandon; he was both hospitable and accommodating. I really enjoyed chatting with him about travel and science and meeting his equally welcoming roommate and friends. I am thankful to have spent the weekend in such a pleasant home and I look forward to seeing Brandon around Madison, as well as putting to good use his plethora of tips on beer brewing and pancake making. Oh, Ruby the house cat is worth meeting too!

Hey, Bran, I really enjoyed your visit as well. Keep telling people your wonderful and crazy stories from all over the world. I loved it that, although you'd been in romania only a few days, and you weren't staying for long, you made an effort to learn the language and have conversations with random people. What a considerate thing to do as a traveller...Hope you're good, wherever you are

Meeting this man was one of the most unexpectedly amazing experiences of my recent life. He is so disarmingly honest, transparent, and open that he is impossible to dislike. His way of looking at the world makes him not only refreshing to be around, but is inspiring to be around. If you have the chance to spend time with Brandon, and you do not, you are foolish.

I was very lucky to meet him and spend couple of hours talking to him. I would like to meet again and may be that happens in Wisconsin one day. If you have a chance to host or meet Brandon - go on :)

Brandon is one of rare truly warm persons. I felt privileged to host him in my house and communicate with him. I rapidly became fascinated with his 18 months travel througout the whole Asia (Russian empire, China, Tibet, Indian sub-continent, Uzbekistan, Georgia etc.), hitch-hiking, improvising and living with local people. I now read his other references and notice that most persons he meet felt also influenced and motivated by his ways. His quest for humannes and his conviction that man is essentially peaceful and hospitable are accomplishments that he seems to live accordingly. Often, the European and US people need to dig deep to re-discover these latent ressources. We spent three nights in Bucharest, drinking tea on the carpet, Pakistani style :), listening to King Crimson and Turkmen fusion-rock, talking about cultures and their values. His travel stories are striking, as well as his humour. Enjoyed his enthousiasm with Russian spirit and Asian naturalness in general. Great companion, educated, uninhibited, ready to explore and understand! I also like now the way he presents himself in his profile "I'm a valid human being".

a very nice fellow! Brandon - he is a thoughtfull and grounded young man who has interests and maturity that exceed his age. He threw together a dinner without a recipe using the theory that a bit of improvisation makes the world more interesting. The food and conversation were both top notch. He made me feel very much at home amoung his roomates and friends ...

A great guy that have something to contribute on any topic of discussion. I am sure that if you host him during his travel he will have lots to share!
