Couch Available: Maybe Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 2
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: DependsNormally a double futon in the loungeroom is the sleeping arrangement. *MY COUCH IS OCCUPIED FROM THE 14TH OF MARCH TO THE 27TH OF MARCH SO PLEASE DON'T SEND ME REQUESTS DURING THIS TIME, I WON'T BE ABLE TO HELP YOU*
I live in the relatively relaxed neighbourhood of West Brunswick, which is 2 minutes walk from a main tram line that takes about 20 minutes to get into the city. It's a funny house with a ghost on the stairs (if you're lucky you might see it), a huge back garden and 3 other friendly housemates who, like me, drift in and out of the house like our ghost. A great fish and chippery, a supermarket and a video store are all walking distance from me.
As far as sleeping arrangements go, you will either be sleeping on a mezzanine in my room on a bed (that's right, a bed!) or a double futon in the loungeroom. We have wireless which I am happy to set up for you if you need the internet (just don't use it for porn and downloads larger than word/pdf files). I'm usually very happy to host people unless university has me by the intellectual balls, in which case I turn into a feverish typing demon at my computer until the early hours of the morning. That being said, it does not take much to convince me to head out for a drink and a chat.
I'm pretty relaxed about hosting people, the rules basically being that you clean up after yourself, you are polite and considerate to both myself and my housemates, that if you use some of my food then you replace it, and if you really want to make a good impression, help out with the house here and there (cleaning etc.) or teach me a new recipe because I love cooking and eating food that people cook. I love dinner parties, and will probably organise one if you are up to it.
I love meeting new people, and will probably bombard you with questions about your life, philosophy, passions and country, so if you are someone who likes to keep to themselves and not interact with your hosts, then this probably isn't the place for you. Then again, if that's the case, couchsurfing isn't the place for you anyway.
*IMPORTANT* Finally, please take time to fill out your profile. It's just common courtesy to introduce yourself a bit if you are asking to stay at someone's house. If you have an incomplete profile then you will most likely receive an e-mail asking you to fill it out, and that's no way to begin getting to know one another. Please use the couchsurfing request button. It's what it's there for. And in your CS request, please address me by my name (it's not hard to find), rather than 'nightfell' or 'hey there'; that becomes tiresome, and I'd like to know you have read my profile rather than just my credentials. Pretty simple. I don't know why, of late, people have struggled to follow that.
That pretty much covers it. Anything else that arises, questions, queries etc. can always be talked about at the time.

Lost but continually, perpetually, being found.
How I Participate in CSI participate in the CS project as much as I can. I am always (time-permitting and depending whether I am in Aus) willing to meet new couchsurfers and show them some of the more clandestine eateries and bars Melbourne is renowned for, and am strongly encouraging of the social networking aspect of couchsurfing. If I host someone, I will do my best to make sure they meet other couchsurfers as well for a more rounded experience.
Don't hesitate to drop me a line of you have any questions.
CouchSurfing ExperienceI have travelled to many countries and sometimes found myself sleeping on the couch or floor of someone I may have met on the train or shared a room with a fellow traveller. So far I have hosted and surfed with a fair few people and had drinks, adventures, late nights, early mornings, deep discussions, ridiculous banter, aesthetic appreciation and philosophical debates with many, many more. Types of People I enjoyPeople I feel I can learn from and feel I can teach something in return. People who are genuine with their feelings, banter and emotions and are not afraid to open up to strangers. People who are fun loving and adventurous. People who are both gracious and receiving. People who are respectful and mindful of others. Most importantly, people who are willing to just let themselves go and live for the moment. That's what life's about, don't you think? Teach, Learn, ShareI can teach you how to cheat at cards, amaze people with rubber bands, make origami cranes, teach you the basics of contact juggling (I'm still learning), rabbit on for hours about poetry and philosophy, recommend books to suit any taste or state of mind, teach you some archaic but beautiful English words, and show how to give a damn good massage.

From Monika Kalinowska Gizycko, Poland Dec 30, 2009 Positive My VK machine got lost somewhere so I do know for sure but I'm guessing that S is a replicant of the ultimate sophistication, imagination and beauty incomaprable to Nexus 6 or any other model I have seen in my entire life so far. Anyway if I were a blade runner I would definitely abandon my mercenary lifestyle and devoted myself to idealism and creative writing in return for one of his poems.
From Oliver Edwards Portsmouth, United Kingdom Dec 4, 2009 Positive I met Sam in Marrakech through several other Couchsurfers. Although we didn't spend that long together, he comes across as a generous and highly smart guy-excellent company. He is also an avid writer, which is always good! I hope our paths will cross again-Sam, you are always welcome to visit Portsmouth!
From Lukasz Podsiedlik Dublin, Ireland (Republic of) Dec 2, 2009 Positive Sam, you're the special person! So energetic, positive, extremely friendly and open-minded. I hope to see you again, somewhere, on the road of our life ;-)

We shared a twelve pack and many hours of delightful conversation and musings. He is one of those rare souls who is just effervescent with motivation and creativity. I was very lucky to hear his beautiful poetry and wisdom, and equally fortunate to discuss our current philosophies on love and life.
I think we met at a very interesting time in our lives, and I think we left knowing a little more about ourselves.
The sooner I run into you again, the better.

From Holly Summers Ithaca, United States Sep 28, 2009 Positive Hosting Sam and Debbie was great fun, and makes me all the more willing to take in stranded CS-ers whenever I can. Sam goes through life with charm, flexibility and an eye for beauty and irony. If you get a chance to host him, do it, and not just for the excellent meals he can whip up or the delightful magic tricks. May our stomping grounds overlap again.
From GREGOIRE Brussels, Belgium Sep 23, 2009 Positive Sam is a very nice guy whom with you can have really interesting conversation. He hosted me in Bristol, and I had a "this is better than real life" experience - the delicious food we ate and the brilliant company made it an unforgettable weekend. I have rarely enjoyed myself more than at his place! I even ditched a Banksy exhibition, the initial reason for my trip, in order to spend more time there. See you soon matey!
From Quetzal Nottingham, United Kingdom Aug 4, 2009 Positive Sam is a remarkable human being. He came to me at the turning of the tide, guided by the little light beside me, and offered me a haven from the storm. He took me from the sea and he nourished me with friendship and calmed me with gentleness. His outstretched hand welcomed me and his fire warmed me. He needed not, but he sensed my need. He sustained me in more ways than he yet knows. For this I will ever be thankful
Sam is one of the few who really understands. Listen to his words, let him listen to yours. Walk together, talk together, be silent together. Touch his spirit and allow him to touch yours also. You will find here one of life’s angels. Truly a friend to cherish until the end of time
From Igor Velepic Domzale, Slovenia Jul 31, 2009 Positive Sam is a very poetic person, not only in his profession but also in the way of living. Ending the day with his poems was just great! Hvala!

From Hilary Kingman Seattle, United States Apr 22, 2009 Positive Sam is a true delight to spend time with. We met at game night and formed an instant connection. He invited me to his mum's house in Bristol for a couple days, which was amazing, and we shared some of our deepest thoughts and feelings with one another. I know that couchsurfing has some amazing people, but they pale in comparison to Sam. He is truly one of a kind and I'm very honored to be his new friend. I am very much looking forward to future good times together. We definitely have a karmic connection!
From viollka Sheffield, United Kingdom Apr 7, 2009 Positive Sam...we first met at a party in London, and unfortunately didn't see each other untill months after, around a chinese chequers board. but i had the incredible pleasure of being his guest in Bristol for a weekend, and what to say: he is amazing, his hugs are superb, he'll go out of his way for his guests, has an incredible music taste, reads probably more than me...and is a giving sweetheart. ah don't forget the curlies! and the food he cooks. gosh, i so want to be back in Bristol now!

From Juli Mata Budapest, Hungary Jan 13, 2009 Positive Sam is one of a kind. A wonderful, inspiring soul..Talking to him is like getting on a sailing boat with the promise of a wonderful adventure, and wether high waves or calm waters, sunshine or stormy weather is ahead you feel safe ..and you know the only limit to this journey is the horizon. Don't let him sail away without getting on board at least for a bit.

From miriam s*ometimes Vienna, Austria Dec 9, 2008 Positive ....now, i've been hearing about sam for quite a while, and as we finally met, it was only natural to find out we are deeply connected ever since. of course there was only one (lovely) missing link between us....
best example for his fetching personality: he makes and lets people behave like they really are, with no judgement whatsoever, but encourages to express the most honest self. sam puts people at ease and this quality is nurtured by some of the most important principles in life: sam - respect, openness, curiousity, empathy, charm, being different, being flexible: you know it all. it amazed me to see how peacefully you move in your world, and naturally let others be part of it. so grateful that i found the entry as well....!
From Indigo Anya Norwich, United Kingdom Nov 9, 2008 Positive Sam is a kind and compassionate guy with a great sense of humor. He's laid-back and easy-going. He always has a new magic or sleight of hand trick to show you and he plays a mean game of Scrabble. All in all, a fun friend and good guy to know.
From Juan Vazquez Perez Madrid, Spain Oct 9, 2008 Positive I had the chance to meet Sam at my place in Norwich, while he was being hosted by my housemate Karl. He was my first contact with the couchsurfing experience and the great impression I got from him definetely pushed me to get deeper into this project. take care mate
From Michael Straßburger Regensburg, Germany Sep 28, 2008 Positive Sam is a walking smile and communicative engine, ready to share his lyrical thoughts and enjoyment with the world and lucky wise also me :) Had good times over in Melbourne's days and nights, including well talks and good fun - he's a socializing mate who talks and comes along with everyone!
Looking forward to use my next chance to catch up more with him, to hit the cords and keys by jaming through the night! You will enjoy him, no question ;)
From Crystal Pollock Melbourne, Australia Sep 1, 2008 Positive It was such a whirlwind of a time staying with Sam. I had been traveling around Europe then made the swift move to Melbourne. Sam showed me many of the little hidden bars that Melbourne is so well known for having, as well as his favourite little shops and cafes.
Thus far i have actually stayed with Sam twice and both times have been lovely. I'm very grateful for his generosity and kindness, for letting me come back a second time, as well as taking care of me when i came down with a cold. Thanks so much Sam and happy travels.
From Melanie Chow Melbourne, Australia Aug 8, 2008 Positive Sam's a real traveler who knows how to live life fully and always open his arm for the wind to travel through his hands
and the best part is the wind carried him back to Melb. Now we are sharing the same rooftop, everyday is a little surprise, a little magic, lots of music and hugs..
Sam is a hungry kid, feed him with books and and poems. Sam is a wise man, feed him with love and warmth. He will dance with you until the sun rises!
From Shell Stammers Melbourne, Australia Aug 8, 2008 Positive Sam is a delight. I love his apparent attitude towards life and the people he meets during it. He's a lot of fun, and nice bloke to boot. I'm a bit bummed out he's leaving before I get a chance to know a bit more about him, but I hope the next adventure of his life is fantastic and full of unexpected occurences.
From Eliza Zanuso Melbourne, Australia Aug 7, 2008 Positive Sam is a dude! When we met I already felt like we had been friends for ages, he has fascinating opinions, but loves new ideas as well, which is really cool. We had some stimulating discussions about the great philosophical mysteries of the world. I imagine we will get to know each other more. As we share the same town, and of course a love of tea!
From MELBOURNE Melbourne, Australia Aug 2, 2008 Positive It was a pleasure to meet Sam. He is a source of fascinating and amusing anecdotes as well was being a patient listener.
A perceptive observer of the world and has keen interest in the human psyche. Coupled with a great deal of personal charm, makes him the ideal houseguest and dinner companion.
Truly, following his own heart. I'm glad to have his friendship.
From JULIAN309 Melbourne, Australia Aug 2, 2008 Positive The thing that I'm saddest about when it comes to Sam is that I didn't get enough of a chance to have some of the really good conversations I know I would've been able to have with him before he left for a year.
Friendly, engaging, and interesting to talk to, Sam also seems to share my interest for good food and baking/cooking, which naturally wins him a lot of extra points. ;) You'll enjoy spending time with this guy, so meet him if you can.
From Dean Gray London, United Kingdom Jul 30, 2008 Positive Sam is a lovable guy who is always interesting to talk to. We enjoy discussing certain people's grandmothers, childhood memories of ridiculous cartoons or watching comedies (usually english) that push the boundaries of what is truly wrong. Interestingly we have both seperately watched the banned Pokemon Episode: Dennō Senshi Porygon to see if we were in fact epileptic. Some in fact may call that stupid, others call that extreme sport. I on the other hand with my enquiring mind would prefer to know. :P
From Aaron Schultz Melbourne, Australia Jul 21, 2008 Positive Always a pleasure hanging out with Sam! He's certainly comfortable around a dinner table, drink in hand, conversation and laughs aplenty... He also seems to always have an evening planned and knows all the secret bars and clubs in Melbourne...
I'm looking forward to our future meets!
From Luke Brahanu Boxall Derby, United Kingdom Jul 16, 2008 Positive Sam is one talented magician with sum nifty card tricks and a great taste in music. I thoroughly enjoyed having him stay with me! An ideal couchsurfer!
From Sjoerd van den Dries Gorinchem, Netherlands Jul 15, 2008 Positive It was such a pleasure to meet Sam. Him being both an awesome story teller and great listener, we had some good and hilarious conversations while having a beer, coffee or eating some damn good chocolate mouse. He has a wonderful personality, making you feel at ease and being interested in about everything you say, while having his own clear opinion on the matter as well. And not to forget, his topographical knowledge is outstanding! :) I really hope to catch up with him in Europe. Take care mate.
From Regina Rausch Regensburg, Germany Jul 4, 2008 Positive Love to hang out with Sam. He is the perfect mix of laid-backness (not sure if I am creating a word here :-) and stimulating person. I feel at ease with him and there is basically no topic he hasn't an opinion on which doesn't mean he is not open to yours. I would have loved to hang out with him in Melbourne more to see HIS city but am definitely looking forward to spending more time with him in Europe!
From Rachel Bucknall Melbourne, Australia Jul 3, 2008 Positive The quintessential CSer, you can look forward to seeing him at any event. While surrounded by people, he has a wonderful knack of managing to talk to them all and properly stay in touch :)

We met over drinks and follow up with a lunch and a long discussion on everything. His enthusiasm for living and experiencing all thing is influential. I look forward to meeting again in the future.
From --wanderlust-- Melbourne, Australia Jun 14, 2008 Positive Sam's fantastic to talk to, very interesting, intelligent, well-read and with excellent taste in music!
From Maloti Ray Melbourne, Australia Jun 13, 2008 Positive Ah, Sam. I can tell when a person has lived their life through the prism of literature and it is a fabulous prism indeed. Though it does not mean that we will refrain from gaping at trainwrecks when the opportunity passes out drunk in front of us!
From TRAVELLINGDEB Melbourne, Australia Jun 13, 2008 Positive He has offered me some great advice on CS and travelling.... plus he whispered poetry in my ear.... Fantastic advice, great for a laugh and sweet nothings to boot! Brilliant
From Shar Towner Fallon, United States Jun 12, 2008 Positive A truly fascinating bloke. Really knows how to have a good time, and uses his wit to bring on the laughs. I can't wait till we meet again.
From Winston Macpherson Montreal, Canada Jun 11, 2008 Positive Watch out people this guy is bad news. If you don't want to have a wicked time, meet interesting people, have crazy and strange conversations about naked pirates and the wonders of the universe then I advice not
contacting this guy. Too much of an all around crazy good time!
From Lena Vizzone Melbourne, Australia Jun 10, 2008 Positive I had met Sam a few times at CS gatherings but really got to know him when we bumped into each other in the city and talked flat out for a couple of hours over beer. I think we covered every big topic that afternoon. Since then we've hung out more and more, and each time, it is great! He is open and honest, a big thinker willing to share his ideas about life, and someone who just can't sit still in life - a reflection of his want to know and experience it all. I'll miss our chats when he jet sets to London for a year, and am really glad for the opportunity to get to know him even better before he leaves.
From Alexandra Cikic Melbourne, Australia Jun 10, 2008 Positive Sam is an articulate and well-spoken person and poet. He has this thing of coming up with, let's call them nteresting statements, and I just love it when he does that.
He is also warm and generous and has lots to offer.
P.S. We'll see whether we'll be able to sneak you into the girls (and stilletos) only Sex and the City premiere. ;)
From Laura Grainger Gent, Belgium Jun 10, 2008 Positive Though I didn't remember his name, I won't forget his smile! We had an awesome-town time with a huge bunch of other CSers on the Mornington Peninsula and I'd definitely enjoy hanging out with this dude more.
From Waltzing Matilda Paris, France Jun 9, 2008 Positive Sam is a very friendly Aussie guy, loved to play backgammon with him
hope to see you soon in town and if you ever come to Paris while I'm there...
From Rochey Melbourne, Australia Jun 9, 2008 Positive Can I just copy what Sam wrote for me?! He is just one of those likable people...even though he has a tendency to start a conversation with 'so what do you do?' :-)
From Jody Hesch Albuquerque, United States Jun 9, 2008 Positive Sam - a great guy with unmatched enthusiasm, loads of fun to hang out with this past weekend while learning a few card tricks and developing an appreciation for extreme temperatures! cheers bud, look forward to catching up again soon.
From users Dubai, United Arab Emirates Jun 9, 2008 Positive There's a lot I know (now!) about Sam that I'm sure everyone needs to know ... but you'll just have to experience the pleasure of his company and unique brand of humour and wit to find out! Sam's a man of many words and he's not afraid to use them all at once. I had the good fortune to spend some time hanging out with Sam lately and it's seriously impossible to shut either of us up. From Luke Hamilton Shanghai, China Apr 11, 2008 Positive As you did introduce me to this site Sam, I think it is only fair that I leave a comment here. :)
(I don't even know where to begin.)
I was never one that would have been particularly adept at communicating with strangers let alone develop a friendship with them but Sam changed all that. I had a fantastic weekend in Bristol, talking about bigger things than ourselves, eating ridiculous amounts of junk food, watching awesome movies and having my passion for reading rekindled.
Sam is perhaps one of the most open-minded and easy-going people I have ever met and from the looks of things here, it seems like I am not the only person that he has had a profound effect on.
Look forward to seeing you again Sam.

From -MARTINE- Brugge, Belgium Feb 17, 2008 Positive Despite the fact that I had to work, dinners to attend to, and being a one-legged-wicked-witch, Sam put up with me and made a huge impression on me. From Sara Bologna Riccione, Italy Jul 14, 2007 Positive I met Sam in Dublin, he was the sandwich guy when I was starving, that's how he saved my life; then he rescued me when I was completly lost in the city (he was irish dancing in the middle of the street so that I could spot him), bought me some disgusting and very expensive chinese tea, took me to the bookshop where I found out he read all the books i love...everything was brilliant until I found out he's a poet, and poetry's for loosers!!
Thanks Sam, it was a perfect day!
From Robyn Verhagen Henderson, United States Jul 14, 2007 Positive I'm so glad we met him at the CS meeting. He is a hoot and a riot-such a character! We had the most absurd conversations about nothing and everything, but we wouldn't have had it any other way. It is so nice to meet down-to-earth people that are so open to new experiences. We must meet again in either the US or Australia!
From Casto Martinez Genova, Italy Jul 14, 2007 Positive very nice guy, he has many energy, i'll see you in the future
From FREDOU LA FORAINE Quebec, Canada Jul 10, 2007 Positive Great guy, always smiling and up for some good times. Wish I had the chance to learn more about him.. who knows maybe when he comes to visit me in Canada!
From Julien Berlin, Germany Jul 10, 2007 Positive Sam is great, great conversation, even if he is Australian, his english is really good! ;) Keep ur nice smile forever please! Hope to see you around, and in Australia as well!
From MsDanny Melbourne, Australia Jul 9, 2007 Positive OI! - What to say? I like Sam. He´s someone who has so much positive energy that I know I´ll have a fun time being around him - and he´s definately someone I´d steel a huge chocolatefudgecake with ( and maybe even share it)AND! He knows how to play my favourite song - which makes him even better - and to write something more CS relevant - Host him and you´ll have a great time!!Be hosted by him and greatness of time increases even more :)
From MELBOURNEXPERIENCE Melbourne, Australia Jul 6, 2007 Positive Sam, is... the original couchsurfer, he mastered it, the hard way. Ask him about it. He is so warmly welcoming, he makes you feel like he really enjoys your company, he's attentive, makes you feel important (or do you just do that for me, Sam?) Very comfortable with himself, and he's able to admit, he is the much better looking double used in Ocean's 12. He is dedicated to being a great host, he's goes the extra distance, as him to give you a Tour of some Melbourne sites, or even restaurants, he knows quite a few, and they will recognise his face when you walk in the door, a true sign of a local. Together we are always laughing and smiling, he is warm and friendly.
From Shana Wright New Orleans, United States Jul 2, 2007 Positive Sam is muli-talented--full of ideas, adventure, and the energy to pull it all off. He was the first person I have ever just jumped in a bus with and took off on a whim without really knowing him. I was rewarded with a 3 day trip of non-stop laughter and entertainment from this fun Aussie bloke. Make sure to check out Sam's dance moves and card tricks which are amongst many suprises you'll find in his satchel of world experiences.
From SLADE London, United Kingdom Jun 17, 2007 Positive We met Sam in Dublin and liked him so much, we tried to spend time with him every day that we were in town! His description of himself as an "introverted extrovert" is spot-on; it's rare that you can be in a noisy, party atmosphere with someone and still have a meaningful conversation, but Sam manages to be both lots of fun yet intelligent and introspective at the same time. The only bad thing about him is that he lives on the other side of the world, but we'll try not to hold that against him. :-)
From Liffy Liff Dublin, Ireland (Republic of) Jun 10, 2007 Positive omg I had such a good time with him, as he is so funny and talkative, and exactly the kind of person, who I like.. definitely happy I know him..hope to see u soon
From dOpeShack Lorient, France May 2, 2007 Positive Had good fun and good chat on the tram on the way back from the party :)
From Melissa Bongi Brussels, Belgium Apr 29, 2007 Positive Sam contacted me for a drink in Melbourne and I'm so happy we met. He knows the city very well and he brings you to cool places you wouldn't even consider entering as a tourist. He's open, he's energetic and he has a great sense of humour. I definately will try to meet him again when I'm back in July and Sam, you are very welcome to use my coach when you come to Brussels in November!
From Scott Woz Chiang Rai, Thailand Apr 21, 2007 Positive Sam's one of those guys who's right down to earth and up for a whole bundle of laughs, a very refreshing individual. I look forward to meeting him again..
From Stu Corbett Melbourne, Australia Apr 17, 2007 Positive Sam the man. Someone who is well traveled and comes across as a person who will contribute much to the couchsurfing project. We share views and ideas about how we involve ourselves in cs and is a welcome addition to our small but growing cs group of friends in Melbourne.
From PEEL Melbourne, Australia Apr 16, 2007 Positive We shared the same surfer (Elad) who blessed both our lives, and that's a good place for our friendship to start. Looking forward to a good chat soon!
From STROSSEL Melbourne, Australia Apr 16, 2007 Positive Insightful, inquisitive. Has a thirst for knowledge and wandering. Would be a lovely host or guest, I imagine. We'll meet again.
From Naomi Gruneklee Brisbane, Australia Apr 16, 2007 Positive I only met Sam briefly but he was very amusing. I think he would be alot of fun to couchsurf with. I look forward to meeting up with him again.
From ROOTLESSTREE Bridport, United Kingdom Apr 13, 2007 Positive Samuel kindly contacted me when he saw I was in Melbourne and we met up on a beautiful afternoon which we spent mostly lying in the Botanic Gardens. Sam felt right away like an old friend, and I found it ridiculously easy to talk to him. I will endeavour to stay in contact with Sam. He is a very interesting man with a wise soul and I hope against hope this is not the last I see of him.
Oh, and he also read me a poem in an awesome bookstore I would never have found otherwise and melted my heart! Be careful, do not let this man read you poetry!
An excellent person to CS with, recommended.
From Elad Pereg Misgav Am, Israel Apr 2, 2007 Positive A great Ambassador of Melbourne.
Exploring the night life, introduced with an amazing friends learning tips and tricks "to the way" and sharing wonderful conversations till the day after. Sam make it so ! , with great experience and an open heart I found his house already with another Couch-er (I am Herrmann the German) Open, warm and welcoming.
send me a copy, and we'll meet again.
From Natasha & Debbie Jardine Addlestone, United Kingdom Apr 1, 2007 Positive Sam joined us to celebrate Natashas birthday in a lovely pub with several other couchsurfers. He even brought Tash a present - a cd of someone she didnt know of and it was driving her insane not knowing what type of music it was!! Listened to it finally and love it!! Sam is a very thoughtful person and after meeting him for the first time can say he really goes out of his way for people and he definately has the right CS spirit!! Hope to catch up again in Melbourne. |
