Couch Information

No couch currently available for surfing.

hi, sorry my couch is unavailable.

on 07 july 2007, noneck noel (aka noel a hidalgo) will depart new york city for a journey around the world to learn from you. affably named "on the luck of seven" or "luck of seven." this is an open-source journey documenting free culture, social innovators and global change.

for seven months, i will stand on the seven contents, dive into the seven oceans, and contemplate seven topics of freedom. while on the way, i will document the journey through stories, photos and videos. this is not my story, this is our story. though your hospitably, donations, projects, connections and friends, our stories will merge into one.

as i wander the earth, my broad shoulders will bear seven topics of freedom: free culture; free and open-source software communities; couchsurfers, bloggers, fellow travelers and vloggers; agents of progressive social change; barcamp, coworking and meetups; happenstance, and climate change. all work will be produced under a creative commons license. all-in-all, this 21st century anthropological view of the personalities in physical / digital world we cohabit will always be freely available.

I'm in Greenpoint, Brooklyn; across the river from Manhattan - above a coffeeshop, across the street from a park, and down the street from the Hipster Nexus of the east coast (williamsburg). i'd love to show you around town, an all night party or parts of new york they leave out of travel books.

Personal Description

NoNeck is an experimental monkey Superboy's father, Jor-El, used to determine whether his son could survive space conditions. He stowed away in Superbaby's rocket, and when it reached Earth, like Superboy and Krypto, he gained super-powers under the yellow sun.

loves being a gemini, and is equally inquisitive and mischievous...
loves long long long walks...
hates evil doers...
hates sheets of ice...
loves art...
hates men who don't give up their seats on subways or buses...
loves the beach...
hates inactivity...
loves nature's beauty...
hates fundamentalist...
loves to travel...

my life started the 24th of May in 1978 to two US Air Force officers. my father describes the day as if it was yesterday. in the scheme of things, no time has passed. Over the years and through countless moves, i matured into a politically active, scooter riding, gentrifying hipster living in the Kingdom of Slackers most call North Brooklyn. unlike most or maybe more like the rest, i have tried to do new and interesting things to change the world. on my path, i have loved, laughed and lost.

through the jobs, half-technical / half-political, i have found my self in a whole new world. grounded in our inherent biology, we are quickly staring at a future where there are no borders. like it or not our organic lives are dependent on our digital participation. i feel blessed to have an opportunity to explore these new intersections, highways and footpahts.

while our future is unknown, change is a constant. in the spirt of the original scouting oath i took on the road to becoming an eagle scout, i will always honor the promise to do my best, to fulfill my duties to earth and all residents, and to help others at all times.

noneck noel is a freelance business and lifestyle consultant, blogger and citizen journalist. his reporting outlets include http://luckofseven.com/, a 21 century anthropology travel project documenting free culture, social innovators and global change; noneck.org, which focuses on the future of media, cities and culture; onnyturf.com, on new york city political and art events; personaldemocracy.com, which addresses the impact of technology on politics; and Coworking, which takes a look at the future of freelance office collectives. his photos have been printed in the new york post, scoot quarterly, and scootering international.

as an advocate of peer-to-peer communication, noneck has been influential in setting up collaborative office environments for nyc freelancers (coworking). from presenting to organizing, you can find him organizing and consulting on numerous grassroots empowered conversations - salzburg seminar on new networks, the lift conference in geneva, barcamp, drupalcamps, rootscamps, the pdf unconference and countless meetups.

his former political clients include john kerry for president, new york state senate minority leaders office, cam kerry for massachusetts secretary of state, the new york state democratic senatorial campaign committee, state senator josé m. serrano, new york state senator andrea stewart-cousins, the assemble for rights nyc campaign, and norman siegel for nyc public advocate. he was a technology coordinator for the 2004 democratic national convention.

I spent an intense couple days with Noel in New York and he made a very significant impression on me. I've been following his journeys with the Luck of Seven ever since, and I have to say... I'm enthralled and inspired. If you have a couch to offer Noel, offer it. You'll be repaid in kind with a terrific experience, a fascinating friend and thoughtful conversation.

Noel made a stop on his world tour at my place in Honolulu for a couple nights. Though unforeseen circumstances cut his stay short, we still had a damn good time spontaneously exploring the island in a variety of ways, from partying with other Honolulu couchsurfers to going on a moped grand prix to eating exquisite local cooking. Noel is a creative and visionary individual, and it was a privilege to be part of his trip.

Noel is a seeker of the highest order, engaged with social and political philosophies and ethics, and yet still open to simply having a good time, sitting at the bar and enjoying a pint and being at the center of a vast web of people. If you have the opportunity to come into contact with him during his 7/7/7 trip, do not hesitate to do so - it should be rewarding for all (including all of us who simply sit at home and wait to watch the video).

If there could be a better outcome then “extremely positive”, then this CSuring experience would fit the bill!

Noel, a true investment banker in the “Karma Economy” opened his flat and social world and welcomed me in as if we were lifelong friends, thus making sure that we’ll be put on that very same path – nice one buddy!

I had loads of unique experiences, that I would never have seen otherwise; from his lovely Greenpoint neighborhood (who know Poland exercised some sovereign claim over NYC?!), to his local bar (Spuyten Duyvil, without a doubt the coolest beer garden on this side of the Atlantic) and eateries (we fought the meat and… the meat won) and most importantly his friends: suffice to say that I got a sample of rooftop experiences that no tourist could ever lay claim too… It was like stepping into the kind of life I would have liked to lead in this city, had it been my own – THANK YOU for it all, and till we meet again, may the force be with you.

Eventhough I didn't actually stay on his couch, I spent a fair bit of time with him in NYC and it was tons of fun! He's a sweetheart and I am going back to visit him for sure! I want to see his scooter out on the road.
