Personal DescriptionI am a grad student working towards a Ph.D. in mathematical physics. Sometimes I wonder why the hell I would do such a nasty thing to myself. Other times I realize that pain and suffering is just part of life. How I Participate in CSEvery 18 months or so I need to get out of the dregs of grad school and spread my wings. I will ammend this as now it seems to be every six months...CouchSurfing Experience10 people 2 room house need I say more? Ireland on an assortment of random couches, a crazy night in Budapest, an enitre flat in Wien to myself, museums and spoken word in San Francisco and tons of more people I just haven't met yet.InterestsI really enjoy gardening and bicycles, but also like sports such as rugby, football(or soccer since I am a silly yank), and baseball. I have been trying to learn bike polo but I keep building bikes to destroy them again!PhilosophyHave as much fun, see as many things, know as much stuff, while I can still breathe.Music, Movies, BooksI love to read novels, but I also like books about food and cooking. Films are fun. Music is good, but dancing is my movement.Types of People I enjoyfolks with an open mind and not afraid to express itTeach, Learn, ShareYour knowledge of a city or town really increases others experience when they see!(I really like this section as I teach and pupils always ask, "when will we use this?"}One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneI packed this long forgotten trail all by myself in early spring here in Missouri. All day I climbed the mountain in the rain and immediately passed out on the summit. In the morning, I saw the most beautiful waterfall that was not even mentioned in any of the literature I was able to find out about the trail. I felt as though I was quite an explorer.Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org ProjectI really like the idea of couch surfing. It seems like a great way to meet local people. The last few times I have traveled I was completely surrounded by others who were also traveling and never felt like I got the local flair.Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Ireland (Republic of), Luxembourg, Netherlands LIVED: United States WANTS TO GO: Brazil
What do these numbers mean?
This summary is not a replacement for reading references; it's a quick summary to help you get started. At a glance, you can see how many references a member has, and how many of them are positive, neutral, and negative.
In the second line, you'll see how many references came from people who hosted this member, surfed with them, and traveled with them. These numbers won't always add up to the total: some references are not categorized, and some may be categorized as more than one thing.
When viewing this summary, don't jump to conclusions! Things that are negative for one person may be positive for another, and vice versa. It's important to read references carefully and evaluate what that information means to you. References (10)10Positive 0Neutral 0Negative

From Dustin Cocco San Diego, United States Aug 30, 2011 Positive Nick & I met at a bike polo tournament in Denver in 2009. Although I haven't seen him in a while, I'd love to hang out with him & those crazy Columbia bike polo players again! Super fun guy.
From Katherine Erdel Columbia, United States Jul 7, 2011 Positive Nick is a great friend! Super fun & caring. Stay with him and you'll definitely have a fun time in Columbia!
From David Wilson Columbia, United States Apr 7, 2009 Positive Nick is a highly friendly, smart and interesting guy. Though I've never hosted him (although I think he did crash on my couch once after a party), I'd do so in a heartbeat.
From Tami Bernstein Duvall, United States Mar 11, 2009 Positive Nick was a totally awesome host! I asked for a couchsurf with only a couple days notice, and not only did he reply affirmatively, he included all his info in the first email which was really helpful. My ETA changed constantly the night I was supposed to couchsurf, due to a delayed flight/missed connection, the long drive from Kansas City, and the length of the show I was in town to see, but Nick was very easy-going and flexible. He recommended a great place to pick up a late-night burrito, and has wonderful pets too. I instantly felt welcomed in his home. Nick seems very trustworthy and is an interesting person too.
From Cassie Levett Columbia, United States Jan 20, 2009 Positive Met Nick at our first Columbia meet up. Very awesome person!
I'm looking forward to the gardening and cycling seasons. Going to pick your brain for info ;P
From Jason Soohoo San Francisco, United States Jan 8, 2009 Positive Nicks a good guy to hang with. He's energetic and open minded. We walked a lot of SF and checked out all sorts of stuff. Plus he's a good drinking buddy. If I ever make it to Missouri, I'd look him up.
From Andy Warthol San Francisco, United States Jan 8, 2009 Positive I didn't actually host Nick at my place. He hit me up looking to pal around the City of San Francisco a bit. I let him ride one of my fixies and I was pretty impressed with the way he was able to keep up. We bombed down from Upper Haight to SoMA to catch an open mic night at Brain Wash Cafe.
Dude bought me a beer and we chatted a little bit. We headed to Zeitgeist afterward and got a picnic table with some other poets. Nick is definitely a cool dude. Wish we coulda kicked it for a little longer but I had to get up early the next day for work.
From Golent Budapest, Hungary Jul 24, 2008 Positive Nick was my first couchsurfer. We met in the evening and we tried to squeeze in as much as possible for that short time he stayed in BP.
We had some interesting conversations, while roaming up and down in the city.
Luckily our eating habits are very similar. We had dinner and exchanged thoughts on food. Food for thought.
We also went to a party where he generously invited me and another friend for some beers. In the morning he washed the dishes. THX!
Thanks for the book, man, I'll see you in Missouri!
From Wyllys Mann Dublin, Ireland (Republic of) Jul 17, 2008 Positive Nick was a good surfer. He had been trekking for 8 days b4 visiting us and you see how much he needed a good night sleep. Once rested and recovered he was great to talk to and even offered tutoring in the most forgetable of math concepts.
From IRISHCALYPSO Waterford, Ireland (Republic of) Jul 5, 2008 Positive Nick was an unexpected guest and an unexpected pleasure! We shared a meal and chatted til after dark and I woke up the next morning to the smell of sausages sizzling! I would recommend him to anyone. He even asked if there were any jobs I needed doing. Thanks for brekkie and Happy Birthday!!
