Couch picture

Greetings! I am living in a beautiful city called Donghae, won't ya come visit me?!

If you want something "slightly off track" head this way. Donghae (population = 100,000) is on the east coast of South Korea about a three hour bus ride from Seoul. Mountains, beautiful beaches, some cool caves, great people, great food -- this place really needs to be experienced! It is very "typical" Korea, and I was here over a week before I saw another foreigner!

I have a very spacious three-bedroom apartment which I share with Benjamin, Amos and the twins (my collection of plants!). We're located right downtown close to everything. I have a wicked and comfortable couch and two people can sleep on it easily enough because it folds out. More than two people are still welcome, but it'll have to be the floor for you! I may have three bedrooms, but only one is furnished!

Other things you should know

VERY IMPORTANT: It is literally impossible to get cash here in Donghae with a non-Korean bank card. Trust me, don't even bother trying. I found this out the hard way. Please make sure you come here with enough cash to get by. Exchanging money into Korean won is no problem.

I'm a minimalist so I'm trying to keep my possessions quite minimal. I have a big extra blanket and a couple small ones, but no extra towels so if you'd like those, best bring them yourself! And of course, people are more than welcome to use my computer/internet and eat whatever grub I/they can whip up.

I'm also quite "environmental" and try to cut down on waste and use of plastic. I "reduce" where I can and recycle almost everything else.

I really enjoy having visitors and anytime is a good time. I work from 9-5 during the week and on the weekends I chill and do "weekend" stuff *grins*

That's it!

Check out some pics of my surfers and see for yourself some of craziness we got ourselves into while I hosted in Canada as well as here in Korea! And feel free to check out CSer David's visit to Donghae here!

Cool? Cool! What are you waiting for? Come on over!

About Gangwon Province

Gangwon is arguably Korea's most scenic province and most of the touristy stuff are, at most, three hours from me. This province is the top tourist destination for Koreans -- and if they like it, there must be something good about it! It is the least populated province with only about 1.5 million people here (and it's Korea's largest province). It has one of the top national parks in Korea. There is a wicked Buddhist temple compound. You can make an interesting trip to the North Korean border -- DMZ. The beaches are amazing, especially in the summer. Scuba diving? And there are lots of campgrounds around here. Last year, Gangwon hosted the world whitewater rafting championships. The mountains are beautiful and the hiking is great! Perhaps you'd be up for bungee-jumping?

Distance-wise, the coast where I'm at is a few hours from Seoul by bus (and costs about $15 US). The capital of Gangwon is an hour or so east from Seoul.

Personal Description

"He's a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans, for nobody."

I'm a patriotic Canadian currently teaching English in Korea. This has been on my "list of things to do" for quite some time and I am very excited to finally be doing this. I've been here since December 2007 and have set up a video blog to share Korea and my life here as a teacher with my friends, family, and the rest of the world. Feel free to check it out and to email me anytime if you have questions about what I'm doing or about how you can do the same!

Soooooo........

I'm a minimalist and I suppose one could say an environmentalist, too. I live to go against the social norms that rule our little world, and I live to the best of my abilities. You'll never hear me say "I wish...", instead, you'll hear me say "I will..." I love and appreciate my life, and I'm passionate and dedicated to everything I do.

I'm an opportunist (in a good sense!) and I do my best to soak up every part of life, not just a little bit of it. I'm an information lover: science, current events, world affairs, politics and business, to name a few. I have experienced quite a bit of the world and this is a big part of who I am today. I'm an adventure/thrill seeker! I love hitchhiking, and have done most extreme sports including sky diving, bungee jumping, paragliding, canyoning, white water rafting, mountain biking and scuba diving (check out two of my great dives, one in Thailand and one in Malaysia). I also play a few musical instruments, primarily guitar with which I write a fair bit of music (you can check out a couple of my tunes here and here. I love being in nature, especially hiking. Best hike of my life was in January 2009: two weeks in the Himalayas all the way to Mt. Everest base camp at 17,600 ft. Before that, highlights include lots of hiking in Korea, a silly hike in Switzerland in 2007 and the amazing Roraima trek in Venezuela in 2005.

Arguably my number one interest is the outer world of possibilities and experiencing new and exciting things. The main way I feed this interest is by travelling. I love meeting new people and learning about them and their experiences. Cultures fascinate me, as do languages. And food? Oooo it's so great to experience different foods of the world!

I'm up for doing anything...assuming someone else does it first! If not, chances are I'll do it first anyway.

"Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command."

Defining Moments in my Life

1. The death of my father, Ralph, on January 25th, 2006. He died of a heart attack. It was fast, unexpected, and hopefully painless...but he was all alone. He was an unbelievably amazing man. We were very close, and not a pain-free day has gone by since my world was flipped.

2. Losing my good friend Adam to Cancer on April 29nd, 2007. More details below under "One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done".

3. Meeting phenomenal people, most notably my dad, Adam, and Dave.

Travel Goals

Rather than calling these "travel goals" I much prefer the term "experience goals." Let me give more details!

1. Work/live in Asia, teaching English (well, I'm taking care of this one right now!). But while I'm currently in Korea teaching English, I'd also like to teach in Japan; but that probably won't be for a few years (2011?).

2. Experience more of Asia. So far, great trips throughout Korea and many other countries here, but my eyes are set on a few of the other amazing treasures over here.

3. Another trip to Africa (I've previously spent a couple weeks in Egypt). I'd like to fly into Kenya and make my way to South Africa. Tackling Mt. Kilimanjaro is a top priority for this trip as is finding a place to settle down for a month or two or more to do some worthwhile volunteering.

4. I plan to work/live in Australia after completing a masters degree (2010?) and experience some adventure sports in New Zealand while I'm in the general area.

5. A return to South America. I spent an amazing three months travelling this continent in 2005. But I didn't get to experience a Brazilian Carnaval. Nor did I make it to Chile or Argentina, musts for me. And Easter Island? Perhaps this trip will coincide with my trip to Australia.

6. I hope to spend more time in Europe (England, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, etc.). I've lived in Ireland for two months, and was back visiting once since, but heading back there yet again is a must for me! Turkey is a must...and so in Croatia.

7. Space. Yup, this is a big one on my travel list. Preferably the moon, but I'll settle for just a general trip to space :)

Ambitious goals and plans?! Oooooooh yah! But that's life! As John Lennon said: Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans...and like I always say, plans are made to be changed, I know that all too well -- who knows how this crazy thing called life will work out!

I have so many pictures of you all, but something is wrong with the site and I just get an error message when I try to upload now!

Great times, great times. Can't wait for more!

Interests

Music is up there high on the interest-level. I play guitar, drums and a bit of piano. Environmental issues? And I LOVE adventure sports and there are only a few I have yet to experience. Need I mention travelling? I am interested in anything "international"...that probably goes without saying. Food, cultures, languages, imaginary borders, globalization, international development, etc., etc.

Oh, and I read A LOT (mainly online sources). I'm well-read on a ton of different things and can usually hold my ground pretty good in a wide range of discussions. Science, current world events, politics, business, philosophy...pretty much anything intellectual.

Philosophy

Although we hope and presume the sun will always rise tomorrow...it may not. LIVE your life, LOVE your life and above all, be INSPIRED to reach an undefined, unprecedented level of greatness!!!

Be mean:

"For both excessive and insufficient exercise destroy one's strength, and both eating and drinking too much or too little destroy health, whereas the right quantity produces, increases or preserves it. So it is the same with temperance, courage and the other virtues...

This much then, is clear: in all our conduct it is the mean that is to be commended."

~ Aristotle, 4th century bce Greek philosopher

Music, Movies, Books

As for music. Hmm....well, my itunes shows over 400 artists, nearly 10,000 songs, about 60 gigs in total. Let's look at the Bs for a sample: The Beatles, Barry White, the Beach Boys, Bad Company, the B52s, the Beegees, Beethoven, Ben Harper, Billy Joel, Boston, Boy Robot, Bob Marley, etc. Love'm all equally. And that's just the Bs!

Really diverse! I love ambient/chill, electronic, psychedelic, big Floyd fan, classic rock, blues, Icelandic, folk, some great indie bands, 80s rock, etc., etc. Truly depends on the day!

For the most part, I'm not a fan of typical movies that merely display unrealistic crap (and never-ending violence) to eager people, rather, I enjoy suspenseful movies, ones that are very unpredictable, and that have twists in them that leave your head spinning by the end!

One movie I HIGHLY recommend everyone MUST see is Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth.

Everybody MUST also watch the amazing, amazing Playing for Change videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/PlayingForChange

Types of People I enjoy

Adventurous, spontaneous and worry-free people not scared to live. People who like to smile and don't get weighed down or stressed out by the small stuff but rather aim to take the next rotation around the sun to the max. Musicians rock, and environmentally-conscience people are great, too. And, of course, those who also like to live against the social norms. Open-minded peeps? For sure :D

Bob Marley said it best: "Until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes."

Teach, Learn, Share

There have been many times where I've changed my plans based on finding out about something new to see or do in a particular place. So what I want to share are pictures and videos of some of my adventures, in the hope that at least one person will get motivated to try some of the same things as me. If one or some of my pictures or videos motivate you, please let me know! I would be more than happy to give you any details you'd like!

Notably amazing experiences not to be missed (from my South American trip, 2005): Amazing Amazon jungle trip in Brazil, the Roraima trek, scuba diving and cayoning in Venezuela, rafting and mountain biking in Ecuador, and, of course, Machu Picchu in Peru.

Additionally, through my video blog I am sharing my life in Korea. This is a very interesting place, and I will continue to do my best to share my life here with the rest of the world.

One Amazing Thing I've Seen or Done

Supporting a friend with cancer. Shaving my head for him, letting him shave it, sitting by his side through his chemo treatments, and making a dream of his come true, less than a week before he died. Adam Mermuys was his name, and he died way too soon, at age 25, on April 29th, 2007 -- let him never be forgotten. He was one of my closest friends, and perhaps the most amazing, sincere and genuine person I have ever met.

Adam taught me many, many things, including how important it is to take each day as it comes. He reminded me how vulnerable the human body is, and how important it is to make the most of our time on this planet. Never having a "poor me" moment, his strength is something I can only dream of having. Adam is a symbol of all things amazing and great. I consider myself very fortunate to have had so many great times with him, including our last one, under a bright blue sky with birds chirping...

I also had the great opportunity to make a dream of his come true, very shortly before he died. Check it out: here.

Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org Project

This site rocks big time -- of course, it's much, much more than just a website. It's an international community. I can't begin to list how many amazing people I've met via this website. The growth is exponential and really hard to believe! When I joined the site, we were only a few thousand members -- and look at us now!

What an action packed 4 days! I'd recommend anyone to cs with Patrick. Generous and with a mean set of pipes for Noraebang, we DJed in to the night, went hiking, ate with a monk, drank soju and hof, and generally had an awesome time. He's one hell of a tour guide and a true gentleman!

I must have gone to Donghae to meet Patrick! I surfed Patrick's couch for a couple of nights and it was a great experience. God knows what took me to Donghae on a 11 day trip to South Korea! Patrick was a very generous host and he made sure I enjoyed the time I was there. We went to a beach, partyed korean style, played basketball, went sightseeing, went to his school, I was a part of the class and all this in less than 2 days! (By the way,he's the only person who made me drink as much as I did the other day). Thank you Patrick, I had a really nice time ;) I wish everyone had a person like him around. Hope to see you again in India or somewhere else in the world Patrick.

Patrick is a wonderful, wacky guy who will make you laugh and look at everything in wonder...He is gentle, intelligent and great fun to be around, exuding warmth and happiness yet he is capable of deep and serious conversations if need be, and at the same time be able to flit off onto fulfilled adventures at the drop of a hat, and make it all magically happen...he is someone we had a great time hosting, discussing CS and life with and rearranging parts of my new home with and spending time discovering parts of Pune with Meher, Sheila, Susan and the wonderful Belgian couple.

All time favorite quote by ANYONE during the big South Korea meetup (quite possibly in my entire time of Korea actually)

Patrick on not eating his eggs(paraphrased): "I just feel bad I mean the poor thing died for nothing, or didn't not live for nothing...or wait"

Literally I cannot stop laughing at the "deep" conversations had over breakfast. And that was only about 15 minutes of the time I spent with him. So draw your own conclusions, but my cliche reference is this:

Patrick is a strong supporter of couchsurfing and all it entails. He's helped me regain faith in the program. Plus he can boat-jack and boat, and drink soju out of my purse.

It was so sorry to have not enough time to introduce about Korea, but hopefully we can get lots of opportunity in the future. Good luck all your life in Korea. Keep in touch!

UPDATE: It was my turn to surf his couch and east coast of Korea, and seriously fabulous to me. Really would like to appreciate to Patrick of his kindness and lots of fun!........except for the last part of the video which he edited :p Thanks a lot, my buddy!

Patrick is a awesome soul and super energetic guy. We met first in High school when I spend a year as a exchange student on PEI in the year 1999. We became good friends and he never missed a chance visiting me in Germany. I had the chants to come back to Canada this year where we meet up again to spend some awesome time on a trip to Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal,...
He was the one introducing me to CS which was on of the best things happening to me in a long time. He lives a true CS style life, he spreads the spirit to every one and every buddy.

Patrick! Awesome!! When I met him in Hakata we went for kurukuruzuC ,he put lots of `WASABI' then took some! So funny! Then moved to Japanese Inn and joined the BR carnival at night time, it was really fun. Drinking and dancing together^^ From the next day, I hosted him, so glad to have him. On Japanese new year, we celebrated it with huge sushi, of course he used plenty of wasabi^^. Sightseeing, temples, meditation, conversations with eating and drinking, everything was great! He is a well-balanced amazing person. I have learnt many things from him and was moved. Thank you Patrick! See you in Korea very soon! 2008/Feb

Patrick, my crazy chaos traveller! :P
To me, he is the personification of the couchsurfing spirit!
A spontaneous meeting when he was close to Heidelberg ended some amazing days later, including sightseeing in the pouring rain and travelling together (+ Corona, the adorable pug) to visit Sebastian. Hilarious!
We instantaneously became friends. So much fun to have his company! He rocks big time!

But there is so much more about this genuine, warm guy who brings a big smile to my face every time we talk...I've only scratched the surface so far and truly hope to get a lot of chances to dig deeper. This story is to be continued! Big hug!

Update: Three months later, a flight to Germany, Patrick on board! And finally my chance to dig deeper and to discover how smart, sincere, sensitive and passionate he is and how big his heart :)
A trip to Spain full of crazy adventures, amazing moments of synchronicity and beautiful, memorable experiences. An incredible week-end in Paris and the Normandy! And more trips to come! I can't imagine a better friend and travelling partner than him! HAPPY TIMES!!!!!

PS: His couch in Korea is great. Definitely worth a visit or three!

Patrick first contacted me: I was unfortunately unable to host him. But Jean-Baptiste could do it, and I had the luck to meet THE great Patrick, himself!!

He brought me a new vision on the Couchsurfing project, which made me more eager to host new people. He was not afraid of the snow for running to visit temples, and not afraid to get up at 7 for some Zen meditation, sitting in the cold wind for a little hour.

I hardly know where Donghae is, but for sure, I will be there next September. Don't forget to watch his videos on his youtube page: you may learn a lot of things. Did you know that Allen Collins was born in Jacksonville, FL?

Patriiiiiiick! As the Eminent Sea Cucumber would approve, we had both great time in Kyoto thanks to the other. I was very glad to have him at my place, our nights were chotto delayed toward the morning but it didn't prevent us to admire the beautiful snow on the temple roofs, on the mountains and between our frozen toes.
He gave us CSers in Kyoto some good pieces of advice about CS, and I think I learnt a lot by listening to his life experience and positive philosophy.
May the soju keep you fit!

Patrick is a perfect example of a couchsurfer: he gives as much as he can, enjoys his time, develops great connections, and is always ready for new things. Ive enjoyed the many opportunities Ive had to interact with patrick, and I expect to keep learning from him the important life lessons he always leaves behind.

[update] Visited this crazy guy in Hamilton, for a great time and great friends. Oficially, we were surfing the same couch at the same time for he was being hosted by a great couple.

[update] Received patrick a few times in Ottawa. We keep being his pit stop/resting area/healing place/partying spot. Good thing he always comes with gifts to repay for the mess he leaves :)

[update] Travelled together to Burning Man. They say that after such an intense experience people either end up loving each other or hating each other. Im positive we dont hate him, but we're sure as hell dont love him either :D

We had a very great evening at a Phill Collins/Genesis Concert in the Dompark in Speyer and i think he will never forget to drink 2x1.0 Liter Beer glases! Unfortnetly he was only so short time in Germany and his trip, that it wasnt possible to show him much more nice sights in the area and i hope he will come back for longer time! Great guest, great CS Member with the addicted spirit like me! Welcome back next time again!
Update: Patrick joined again my area and we met at the Heidelberg CS Rhein-Neckar Meeting at Dianas Place in September 2007. It seems now he is totally addicted Octoberfests and 1 Liter beer mugs! I bet you cant drink not anymore a smaller beer!

Pat is one of those guys, that upon meeting, you realize you would never have been the same if you hadn't. He is a real jewel. He can light a room and even your darkest mood. When you think he's given all he's got....surprisingly he has more. I wish there were more creatures in the world like him, though I guess that's why he's a rarity. He took me all around Prince Edward Island, fed me great pasta, introduced me to some of his lovely friends, gave me a bed to sleep on, taught me alot about the couchsurfing website, shared alot of interesting experiences, travels and thoughts from his own life, drove me all over his province, played music for me, showed me some lovely architecture, let me sleep in, and is a really considerate person. I feel totally privileged to have spontaneously met this kind chap.... it's funny how stuff happens eh?

I must say something... Although I can not find words that are just and properly discribe my time spent with Patrick; I can say that he stands out as one of the above average hosts that you'll find. He kindly without compunction whatsoever performed as an excellent week long host and tour guide for me. Whilst living in the basement of his parents home he gave almost every minute of his day to me. I am very grateful to him and would really recommend a stay with Patrick at his home in PEI.

Patrick is a really funny and cool guy. I got cards of couch surfing website from this CS Ambassador. So you know what an CS addict he is now! I cannot believe that in his travel plan on his profile, China is not listed. Hmmm, Patrick, you've got to be there! Plus, you have had Su and me as friends there!
Thank you for the ride from Ottawa to Toronto!

Patrick is a super fun energetic guy. He knows how to get a party going on. He and his friend Sebastian arrived after a long 14 hour drive and were still wide awake and ready to party. and what a fun time that was... from the green fairy to the Super-trained-german-running-like-a-monkey-in-boxers. Good luck with the rest of your road trip... and you're welcome back anytime!

I have waited to long..... to write this reference, so I hope that a few paragraphs can make up for it. First met Patrick on a train down to the Devil's Nose in Alausi, Ecuador last October...
Ended up travelling with him for a week, through Peru and Ecuador. We had awesome times together, from meeting weird people in Lima...no need name names ;), to having seriously rocking times in Pisco, Peru on Halloween night!! I have the pics to prove it!!
We are for sure gonna hook up in Africa next year.
If it wasnt for him, I would never have gotten to know CS, and would never have met so many cool people and would never have had so many amazing experiences!

Thanks bro!

Patrick is the one who introduced me to couch surfing. He's a great guy and someone you feel comfortable around immediately. We've had some great times and he's always there to inspire me to live my dreams and yet yank me back to reality when I've gone too far. :) I visited him in Korea and he was very helpful with showing me around, providing maps, suggesting itineraries and English/Korean translations. I toured his school met teachers and students, and had great nights out drinking soju with his friends.

This man truly is a CS ambassodor, he was passing through Halifax during a little "patrick time" and dropped me a line just for the sake of meeting another couchsurfer. The next thing I knew patrick was on the phone telling me he'd just found out his guitar neck had snapped but instead of dwelling on it, he came and picked me up then introduced me to some other folks and we all went for a beer and a good time.

Patrick was an amazingly great host! He even took the day to show me around PEI, and wow does he know PEI like the back of his hand showing me all kinds places I never would have seen or found on my own. I met his family too and they were just as kind and generous and wonderful to chat with. The guy even made me pancakes! I can't imagine anyone more generous with their time and knowledge than Patrick was.

Patrick was heading to Findland to attand school and i was travelling around Europe. We ended up hanging out for all our time in Amsterdam and had a great time....'oh the memories.'

My new friend :D. Patrick accomodated last night in PEI. I wasn't sure I had time and money to make the travel by car from Halifax to Kensington, and he's the one who said: 'come on! don't miss that!'
So in PEI I came, and as soon as I told him I was in his town, I picked me up and we were gone for a tour of the island!
After that, we had a dinner at his dad's place, who treated me like a king: 3 lobsters and I-don't-know-how-many-pounds of mussels! That was great, it's something I really appreciated and I'll never forget.
Patrick made his schedule clear so he could bring me around (often with his own car so I can enjoy the scenery), and on the second day we went to the tip of the island.
From the beginning, Patrick gave me a lot of help to prepare my trip, and PEI is a great place!
I mean, if you have to trust someone for your trip in PEI, ask Patrick ;-)

I should have stayed longer :-). I had very much fun with Patrick. He took a lot of time and drove me to many wonderful spots on the beautiful Prince Edward Island. Plus he prepared some very yummy breakfasts. We also went for a bike ride, to a gym, a scottish music concert, almost on a canoe trip (didn't work out because of low tide) and he introduced me to his family and some of his friends. All of that in just four days! He also picked me up and returned me to the bus depot and I could use his washing machine, TV-recorder and his internet connection. And then some. I'm very impressed by his hospitality as well as his approach to life and the world.
